Evidence-Based Assessment of Pesticide-Related Nephrotoxicity: Clinical Outcomes, Experimental Data, and Molecular Signatures.

Pesticide exposure is a plausible but incompletely characterized contributor to kidney injury. This review integrates current clinical, epidemiologic, experimental, and mechanistic evidence on pesticide-related nephrotoxicity, focusing on glyphosate-based herbicides, paraquat, organophosphate insecticides, and atrazine. A structured search of PubMed and Web of Science identified English-language studies published between January 2015 and February 2026. Of 635 records screened, 61 human studies were retained for full-text evaluation, and relevant animal, in vitro, and regulatory sources were ad…

Health status, sanitary gaps, and management practices in honey bee colonies within a tropical production system in Colombia.

Honey bees are essential livestock for pollination and agricultural sustainability, but their health and productivity in tropical regions re … by Varroa mites. Additionally, around 27% of bee bread samples contained residues of fungicides or insecticides, indicating poor traceability in the agricultural and beekeeping production chain in the region. These results highlight critical issues that compromise colony health, increase sanitary risks, and reduce productivity within tropical small-scale prod …

The Impact of Endocrine Disruptor Exposure During Pregnancy on Bacterial Complications and Viral Infections: A Narrative Review.

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are a diverse group of environmental pollutants capable of interfering with hormonal and immune system regulation. In recent years, increasing concern has been raised about the effects of chemicals, including bisphenols, phthalates, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), insecticides, and parabens, on maternal and fetal health, primarily due to their widespread exposure in human populations. Pregnancy represents a critical window characterized by tightly regulated hormonal and immunological adaptations. Emerging evidence suggests that EDC exposure dur…

In-situ growth of a covalent organic framework-based matrix-compatible microextraction coating for sensitive extraction of multiple pesticides.

The potential pesticide hazard to non-target organisms is a global concern. It is critical to develop the sensitive detection methods of multiple pesticides in various complex matrices. Here, benzene-1,3,5-tricarbaldehyde (BTCA) and 1,3,5-Tri (4-aminophenyl) benzene (TAPB) were employed as precursors for the in-situ growth of COFTAPB-BTCA on the surface of amino-functionalized stainless steel wire (SS) via a solvothermal method. The successful COFTAPB-BTCA bonded fiber exhibited significant enrichment capability of pyrethroids insecticides (PYs), organophosphorus (OPPs), and organochlorine (OC…

Imidacloprid-induced lung injury in mice: Activation of the PI3K/AKT/NF-κB signaling pathway via TLR4 receptor engagement.

Significant impairment of pulmonary function has been demonstrated through long-term exposure to neonicotinoid insecticides, such as imidacloprid (IMI). However, the underlying mechanisms of lung injury induced by IMI remain unclear. In this study, a mouse model of IMI-induced pulmonary injury was established, and the toxicity and lung damage were assessed through mouse body weight, organ index, hematological parameters, and histopathological analysis of lung tissues. Furthermore, metabolomics and transcriptomics techniques were employed to explore the mechanistic aspects. Results from the tox…

Current status of the sterile insect technique for the suppression of mosquito populations on a global scale.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) has emphasized the urgent need for alternative strategies to chemical insecticides for controlling mosquito populations, particularly the invasive Aedes species, which are known vectors of arboviruses. Among these alternative approaches, the sterile insect technique (SIT) is experiencing rapid development, with numerous pilot trials being conducted worldwide. MAIN TEXT: This review aims to elucidate the principles of SIT and highlight the significant recent advancements that have facilitated its scalability. I also employ a phased conditional ap…

An assessment of potential pesticide transmission, considering the combined impact of soil texture and pesticide properties: A meta-analysis.

Pesticides are widely employed as a cost-effective means of reducing the impacts of undesirable plants and animals. The aim of this paper is … twenty-eight pesticides examined were differentiated into three groups: herbicides, fungicides and insecticides. The highest risk of pesticide transmission through soils to waterways is associated with soils containing <20% clay or >45% sand. Optimization of Slash and Clear Community-Directed Control of Simulium damnosum Sensu Stricto in Northern Uganda.

Onchocerciasis, caused by infection with Onchocerca volvulus, has been targeted for elimination by 2030. Currently, onchocerciasis elimination programs rely primarily on mass distribution of ivermectin. However, ivermectin alone may not be sufficient to achieve elimination in some circumstances, and additional tools may be needed. Vector control has been used as a tool to control onchocerciasis, but vector control using insecticides is expensive and ecologically detrimental. Community-directed removal of the trailing vegetation black fly larval attachment sites (slash and clear) has been shown…

Impact of broad-spectrum pesticides used in the agricultural and forestry sector on the pesticide profile in wild boar, roe deer and deer and risk assessment for venison consumers.

The present work is the first extensive study of large-scale pesticides research in wild animals. The investigation covered three game species: wild boar (n = 42), roe deer (n = 79) and deer (n = 15) collected from north-eastern Poland. To characterize the 480 pesticides in muscle samples, LC-GC-MS/MS techniques were used. A total of 28 compounds were detected: 5 neonicotinoids, 6 organochlorine and 5 other insecticides, 9 fungicides and 4 herbicides, in the range of 0.1-85.3 ng g-1. Over four hundred detections were done. The highest mean concentrations were as follows: anthraquinone (85.3 ng…

RNA interference of tyrosine hydroxylase caused rapid mortality by impairing cuticle formation in Nilaparvata lugens (Hemiptera: Delphacidae).

BACKGROUND: The application of RNA interference (RNAi) technique in controlling agricultural insect pests has been receiving much attention since the discovery of RNAi. The brown planthopper (BPH) Nilaparvata lugens, a notorious pest of rice, has evolved a high level of resistance to many kinds of insecticides. Tyrosine hydroxylase (Th) is an indispensable survival gene in holometabolous insects, playing key roles in cuticle tanning and immunity. In this study, we investigated whether Th could be used as a potential target in controlling N. lugens. RESULTS: Here, we demonstrated that NlTh had…

Olive Fruit Fly, Bactrocera oleae (Diptera: Tephritidae), Attraction to Volatile Compounds Produced by Host and Insect-Associated Yeast Strains.

The olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae (Rossi), is one of the most damaging insect pests of olives worldwide, requiring the use of insecticides for fruit protection in many orchards. Olive fruit flies are attracted to volatile composunds, including a female-produced pheromone, and host-plant and bacterial volatiles. Preliminary laboratory bioassays were conducted for olive fruit fly attraction to over 130 yeast strains from among 400 that were isolated from B. oleae adults and larvae or other insects, infested olives, and potential feeding sites.
