Severe psittacosis progressing to suspected organizing pneumonia and the role of corticosteroids.

BACKGROUND: Psittacosis is a systemic disease usually with respiratory involvement, caused by the obligate intracellular bacterium Chlamydia psittaci. Exposure to birds, the main zoonotic reservoir, is a major risk factor for infection. The spectrum of disease is highly variable, ranging from subclinical infection to severe pneumonia requiring mechanical ventilation. There is limited data on psittacosis progressing to organizing pneumonia and management of such cases. CASE PRESENTATION: A 63-year-old man was referred to a rural hospital with 11 days of fevers to 39 °C, myalgia, lethargy and s…

Epidemiological determinants of leptospirosis in rural and urban districts of Maharashtra, India.

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is emerging as one of the growing public health problems in many parts of India. It can occur in both rural and ur … sited government facilities first, whereas, in the urban areas, it was 73.9% (P = 0.006). Headache, myalgia, and prostration were more common in cases from rural areas (P = <0.05). Skin rash was found to be associated with urban cases of leptospirosis. The presence of rodents, cattle sheds, pets, and working in paddy fields were common environmental risks …

Beneficial Effects of Ketogenic Diet on Phosphofructokinase Deficiency (Glycogen Storage Disease Type VII).

Background: A deficiency of muscle phosphofructokinase (PFKM) causes a rare metabolic muscle disease, the Tarui disease (Glycogen storage disease type VII, GSD VII) characterized by exercise intolerance with myalgia due to an inability to use glucose as an energy resource. No medical treatment for GSD VII currently exists. The aim of this study was to determine whether a dietary intervention with excessive fat intake would benefit GSD VII. Patient and Methods: A ketogenic diet (KD) intervention implemented as a modified Atkins diet was established for one patient with PFKM deficiency, with a l…

People infected with COVID-19 shows varying manifestations, depending on their health and age. The most common symptoms are fever, cough, myalgia, fatigue, odynophagia, and dyspnea. Infected adults older 60 years of age are the group of patients most susceptible to severe COVID-19 states and present comor-bidity in the presence of chronic diseases. On the other hand, it is also essential to have tests to detect SARS-C…

Managing the combined consequences of COVID-19 infection and lock-down policies on athletes: narrative review and guidelines proposal for a safe return to sport.

COVID-19 pandemic is a global health matter. The disease spread rapidly across the globe and brought the world of sports to an unprecedented stoppage. Usual symptoms of the disease are fever, cough, myalgia, fatigue, slight dyspnoea, sore throat and headache. In more severe cases, dyspnoea, hypoxaemia, respiratory failure, shock and multiorgan failure occur. This appears to be a self-limiting phenomenon related to individuals with coexisting medical conditions, such as hypertension, diabetes and cardiovascular disorders. Nevertheless, cases have been reported in professional soccer players in …

Changes in jaw and neck muscle coactivation and coordination in patients with chronic painful TMD disk displacement with reduction during chewing.

The treatment of a complex temporomandibular disorder (TMD), such as disk displacement with reduction (DDR) associated with arthralgia and myalgia, may depends on understanding the impairments in muscle function. The aim of this study was to investigate the behavior of the anterior temporalis, masseter and sternocleidomastoid muscles in the time and frequency domains during chewing in patients with chronic painful TMD-DDR using electromyographic (EMG) analysis. Thirty-three patients who met the diagnostic criteria for TMD and 32 volunteers without TMD (control group) underwent clinical examina…

Coexistence of Alterations of Gastrointestinal Function and Mechanical Allodynia in the Reserpine-Induced Animal Model of Fibromyalgia.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a disorder characterized by widespread chronic pain as core symptom and a broad range of comorbidities. Despite the prevalence of gastrointestinal (GI) comorbidities in patients with FM, GI functions have rarely been investigated in animal models of FM. AIMS: The purpose of the present study is to investigate the coexistence of alterations of GI function in the reserpine-induced myalgia (RIM) rat, a validated FM model associated with disruption of monoamine system. METHODS: Paw withdrawal threshold (von Frey hair test) was assessed as pain-associated indicato…

Hippocampal oscillatory dynamics and sleep atonia are altered in an animal model of fibromyalgia: Implications in the search for biomarkers.

The pathogenesis of fibromyalgia is still unknown. Core symptoms include pain, depression, and sleep disturbances with high comorbidity, suggesting alterations in the monoaminergic system as a common origin of this disease. The reserpine-induced myalgia (RIM) model lowers pain thresholds and produces depressive-like symptoms. The present work aims to evaluate temporal dynamics in the oscillatory profiles and motor activity during sleep in this model and to evaluate if the model mimics the sleep disorders that occur in fibromyalgia patients. Hippocampal and electromyogram activity were recorded…

[Paclitaxel-associated Acute Pain Syndrome Similarly Occurs in the Patients with or without Previously Administered Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs Prior to Paclitaxel Administration].

Paclitaxel (PTX)-associated acute pain syndrome (P-APS) is characterized by disabling but transient arthralgia and myalgia in up to 80% of patients administered with PTX. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely administered to patients with cancer who have pain or fever, and are mainly used to manage P-APS. In this study, we investigated how P-APS appear in the patients who were administered NSAIDs prior to PTX injection. The incidence or severity and duration of P-APS in patients previously administered NSAIDs were compared to those of patients who were not administered NSAI…
