BACKGROUND: Infection is a significant cause of death in patients with aplastic anemia (AA). However, few recent studies have examined infectious complications in patients with AA.
METHODS: The authors retrospectively evaluated the type of infections, associated pathogens, and outcome of infectious episodes (IEs) in patients with AA who were treated at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center between July 1994 and June 2000.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the radiographic findings of computed tomographic (CT) imaging most suggestive of invasive fungal sinusitis (IFS) in an immunocompromised patient population.
DESIGN: A retrospective review of patients with a diagnosis of IFS reached with CT and confirmed by histopathologic evaluation.
SETTING: An academic tertiary care hospital.

Amphotericin B has long been the mainstay in the treatment of systemic fungal infections, but its nephrotoxicity limits the dosage that can be used. New lipid-based forms may allow higher dosing with less nephrotoxicity. Unfortunately, these new forms are substantially more expensive, and data from randomized clinical trials of their relative efficacy are as yet limited.

We report six new cases of chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) diagnosed at our service. The cases represent 1.1% of all primary immunodeficiencies diagnosed. This study describes the bacteriological and mycological investigation of 212 ear swab samples of dogs with an otitis externa. 11 samples were sterile. Malassezia pachydermatis could be cultivated in 72.1% of all samples, in 21.9% of these cases in pure culture. In 27.9% of all samples only bacteria were found. Oculomycosis is a severe problem in most developing countries. Specific antifungal agents are often unavailable, and are expensive. The use of antiseptic agents was therefore explored. BACKGROUND: As long-term vascular access becomes more prevalent among patients with AIDS, it is becoming more important to consider their potential complications.
METHODS: One hundred two central venous access devices placed in 84 patients with AIDS were reviewed for septic and mechanical complications. Catheters were inserted by one surgeon by means of the cephalic vein cutdown technique. The sample included 88 implanted venous reservoir catheters (86.3%) and 14 tunneled central venous catheters (13.7%).

Conventional amphotericin B (Amph-B) is the drug of choice for treating systemic fungal infections. Recently, a new formulation has become available, encapsulated in liposomes (Amph-lip). This new form of administration was developed in order to lower the acute side effects and to offer the possibility of administering high doses of amphotericin B. In a prospective study, we evaluated the sensitivities of direct microscopy using potassium hydroxide 10% wet-mount preparations and culture for definitive diagnosis of keratomycosis in 171 clinically suspected fungal corneal ulcers. Data from 129 cases of central nervous systemic fungal infections reported in Japan between January 1979 and June 1989 were analyzed. Of 129 cases, 116 were cryptococcal meningitis, 6 candidal meningitis (including meningitis due to Trichosporon cutaneum) and 7 Aspergillus meningoencephalitis. Trichosporon beigelii caused fatal disseminated infections that were resistant to amphotericin B in two granulocytopenic patients.
