[Neuropathology of Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment].

The neuropathological hallmarks of Alzheimer s disease (AD) are the presence of senile (neuritic) plaques (NP), neurofibrillary tangles (NFT), synapse loss, and neuronal cell loss. Large neurons are more affected than small ones. AD patients can also have other non specific lesions, such as granulovacuolar degeneration, Hirano bodies, and Lewy bodies. AD patients present a loss of many cholinergic neurons, especially those located in the nucleus basalis of Meynert, as well as a decrease of choline acetyl transferase (ChAT) activity, which suggested that the core of the cognitive deficits of AD

Glossopharyngeal neuralgia caused by adhesive arachnoid.

Glossopharyngeal neuralgia (GPN) is an uncommon disorder characterized by a severe lancinating pain commonly induced by swallowing. When the pain is resistant to medical management, surgical treatment such as microvascular decompression (MVD) or partial rhizotomy is performed. We report a case of glossopharyngeal neuralgia caused by adhesive arachnoid, in which pain disappeared solely by dissection of the peripheral arachnoid around the glossopharyngeal nerve.

[Anatomical study of the pre-retinacular fat pad of the wrist: application to a new surgical approach to the carpal tunnel].

INTRODUCTION: Decompression of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel by section of the flexor retinaculum is the generally accepted treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome and is usually effective in relieving the symptoms. Following postoperative observations we proposed the hypothesis that incisional pain following open carpal tunnel release could be partly explained by injury to the fat pad situated between the palmar carpal ligament and the flexor retinaculum. METHOD: We performed an anatomical study on 20 fresh adult latex injected upper limbs. RESULTS: The sus-retinacularis fat pad is a r

Anatomical variations of the sensory nerves to the fibular osteocutaneous flap.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the anatomical relationship of the sural sensory nerve complex to the posterior crural intermuscular septum (PS), the key anatomical structure for the osteoseptocutaneous fibula skin paddle. DESIGN: Anatomical study. SUBJECTS: Twenty-two legs from 11 cadavers (7 females and 4 males). RESULTS: The lateral sural cutaneous (LSC) nerve, present in 20 of 22 legs, divides into lateral and medial branches near the head of the fibula. The LSC nerve and its medial branch course away from the PS, whereas the lateral branch tends to course toward the PS. The lateral branch cours

Histopathologic study of alternative substances for vocal fold medialization.

This research investigated the histopathologic and migratory properties of injectable alternatives for vocal fold medialization. Thirteen dogs underwent sectioning of the recurrent laryngeal nerve followed by vocal fold injection with 1 of 4 substances: Teflon, autologous fat, silicone suspension, or hydroxyapatite cement. Six months later, the animals were painlessly sacrificed and histopathologic analysis of the larynx and regional lymph nodes was performed. Although regional lymph node migration was noted, Teflon injection resulted in minimal vocal fold inflammatory reaction. Vocal folds in

Immunohistochemical diagnosis and significance of forensic neuropathological changes.

Immunohistochemistry is very useful when investigating the cause of death. Ischemic cell changes in the hippocampal neurons were not obvious in the brains damaged by hypoxic injury. However, it is suggested that even a moderate hypoxia, which may affect the neuronal proteins and metabolism, induced astrocytosis in the CA3 and CA4 regions, and that in patients with a history of hypoxic attacks neuronal damage may be severe even several hours after ischemic injury. Furthermore, hsp70 expression was found in the CA2, CA3 and CA4 regions of long-term survivors after severe hypoxic/ischemic injury.

Cellular distribution and amount of chromogranin A in bovine endocrine pancreas.

We determined the cellular distribution and the amount of chromogranin A in endocrine cells of bovine pancreas using a polyclonal antibody against bovine adrenomedullary chromogranin A. The relative amounts of chromogranin A in the different cells of the endocrine pancreas were determined by computer-assisted analyses of the optical densities of the immunoreactivities in the stained sections. More than 80% of the immunoreactive chromogranin A was located in the pancreatic B-cells. In immunoblots of acid tissue extracts, only one chromogranin A band (MW 74 KD) was observed. Quantification of th

[Identification of the neuronal protein with antigenic properties of latrotoxin].

Monospecific antibodies against neurotoxin from the black widow spider venom (alpha-latrotoxin) have been used to identify a neuronal protein (s) with latrotoxin-like epitopes. As determined by ELISA, the protein is localized in cytoplasmic fraction of bovine brain. It was partially purified by anion-exchange chromatography and preparative SDS-electrophoresis. Immunoblotting data indicate that this neuronal acidic protein has molecular mass of ca. 100 kDa.

Immunological characterization of chromogranins A and B and secretogranin II in the bovine pancreatic islet.

Antisera against chromogranin A and B and secretogranin II were used for analysing the bovine pancreas by immunoblotting and immunohistochemistry. All three antigens were found in extracts of fetal pancreas by one dimensional immunoblotting. A comparison with the soluble proteins of chromaffin granules revealed that in adrenal medulla and in pancreas antigens which migrated identically in electrophoresis were present. In immunohistochemistry, chromogranin A was found in all pancreatic endocrine cell types with the exception of most pancreatic polypeptide-(PP-) producing cells. For chromogranin

[Etiopathogenesis of chronic nutritional pancreatitis].

The most current form of chronic pancreatitis, i.e. chronic calcifying pancreatitis, is often related to nutritional causes. This disease is characterized by formation within the pancreatic ducts and the lumina of accini of precipitates and calculi composed of calcium carbonate and of a newly discovered protein, the pancreatic stone protein (PSP). The formation of precipitates depends on two mechanisms: (1) a non etiological disorder reducing the secretion of PSP. This small phosphoglycoprotein is a calcium stabilizer which prevents the crystallization of calcium carbonate in a super saturated

Mechanisms of depletion of substance P by capsaicin.

Capsaicin is a neurotoxin that can deplete sensory nerves of their content of substance P and interfere with certain sensory functions, such as responses of animals to noxious heat stimuli. In adult guinea pigs, a species that is susceptible to the effects of capsaicin on both substance P content and sensory function, capsaicin induces selective depletion of substance P from dorsal root ganglia and the dorsal spinal cord, sites of the cell bodies and central terminals of primary afferent neurons, respectively. As the onset of thermal analgesia in guinea pigs precedes depletion of substance P,

Chromatin structure in dementia.

Nuclei extracted from neocortex of patients with Alzheimer's disease and treated with micrococcal nuclease release a population of dinucleosomes that contain an increase in the linker histones H1o and H1oo . Five other degenerative brain diseases that clinically resemble Alzheimer's disease do not result in these changes, although Pick's disease is associated with an increase in H1 on dinucleosomes. Histones from nuclei of patients with Alzheimer's disease are also more resistant to salt-induced release from chromatin than are those from age-matched control subjects. These results support the

Fractionation of spinal cord tissue affects its activity to induce chronic relapsing experimental encephalomyelitis.

Chronic relapsing experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE), an animal disease closely resembling multiple sclerosis, was induced in young guinea pigs by sensitization with guinea pig spinal cord tissue together with complete Freund's adjuvant and a high amount of mycobacterium tuberculosis. Sensitization of animals with myelin basic protein leads to an acute form of EAE, but not to a chronic demyelinating disease. The present study was designed to trace the factors of spinal cord tissue responsible for chronic disease and demyelination by using fractionated spinal cord tissue for sensitiz

Reduction of cholesterol synthesis by methylxanthines in cultured glial cells.

Methylxanthines are shown in this study to decrease cholesterol synthesis in cultured C-6 glial cells. Aminophylline (10(-3) M) produced a rapid decline in cholesterol synthesis so that by 6 hr, synthesis in treated cells was less than 20% of that in untreated cells, and by 24 hr, less than 10%. Aminophylline induced parallel changes in 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase activity, the rate-limiting enzyme in cholesterol synthesis. Theophylline and caffeine produced similar effects. Thus, methyxanthines caused a specific, enzyme-mediated reduction in cholesterol synthesis

Is blindness a realistic complication in blepharoplasty procedures?

Blindness is a rare but realistic complication in blepharoplasty procedures. Review of 55 case reports in the literature supports this view. The cause or causes of blindness are not precisely clear, but orbital hemorrhage after removal of fat seems to be the most common event associated with visual loss. Preoperative ophthalmologic assessment is highly desirable to document preexistent eye and systemic disease. Exquisite care with removal of fat is essential. Careful postoperative observation without patching is necessary. Management of acute visual loss may be medical, surgical, or both.
