Automatic CT image segmentation of maxillary sinus based on VGG network and improved V-Net.

PURPOSE: The analysis of the maxillary sinus (MS) can provide an assessment for many clinical diagnoses, so accurate CT image segmentation of the MS is essential. However, common segmentation methods are mainly done by experienced doctors manually, and there are some challenges such as low efficiency and precision. As for automatic methods, the initial seed points and adjustment of various parameters are required, which will affect the segmentation efficiency. Thus, accurate, efficient, and automatic segmentation method of MS is critical to promote the clinical application. METHODS: This pape

Segmentation of lung parenchyma in CT images using CNN trained with the clustering algorithm generated dataset.

BACKGROUND: Lung segmentation constitutes a critical procedure for any clinical-decision supporting system aimed to improve the early diagnosis and treatment of lung diseases. Abnormal lungs mainly include lung parenchyma with commonalities on CT images across subjects, diseases and CT scanners, and lung lesions presenting various appearances. Segmentation of lung parenchyma can help locate and analyze the neighboring lesions, but is not well studied in the framework of machine learning. METHODS: We proposed to segment lung parenchyma using a convolutional neural network (CNN) model. To reduc

Multimodal Behavioral Data Predict Stroke Patient's Response to BCI Treatment Through Explainable AI.

Brain-computer interface (BCI)-based neurorehabilitation holds promise in enhancing motor recovery after stroke. However, recent research has reported heterogeneous results, indicating both responders and non-responders to BCI therapy. Using explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) methods, this study aims to investigate the independent and combined importance of multimodal behavioral data to predict patients' response to BCI therapy. Forty-two subacute stroke patients with lower-limb motor impairment underwent behavioral assessments, and received two-week BCI rehabilitation training. Linear

Modelling phenomenological differences in aetiologically distinct visual hallucinations using deep neural networks.

Visual hallucinations (VHs) are perceptions of objects or events in the absence of the sensory stimulation that would normally support such perceptions. Although all VHs share this core characteristic, there are substantial phenomenological differences between VHs that have different aetiologies, such as those arising from Neurodegenerative conditions, visual loss, or psychedelic compounds. Here, we examine the potential mechanistic basis of these differences by leveraging recent advances in visualising the learned representations of a coupled classifier and generative deep neural network-an a

MRI-MECH: mechanics-informed MRI to estimate esophageal health.

Dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a popular medical imaging technique that generates image sequences of the flow of a contrast material inside tissues and organs. However, its application to imaging bolus movement through the esophagus has only been demonstrated in few feasibility studies and is relatively unexplored. In this work, we present a computational framework called mechanics-informed MRI (MRI-MECH) that enhances that capability, thereby increasing the applicability of dynamic MRI for diagnosing esophageal disorders. Pineapple juice was used as the swallowed contrast materia

A microstructural neural network biomarker for dystonia diagnosis identified by a DystoniaNet deep learning platform.

Isolated dystonia is a neurological disorder of heterogeneous pathophysiology, which causes involuntary muscle contractions leading to abnormal movements and postures. Its diagnosis is remarkably challenging due to the absence of a biomarker or gold standard diagnostic test. This leads to a low agreement between clinicians, with up to 50% of cases being misdiagnosed and diagnostic delays extending up to 10.1 y. We developed a deep learning algorithmic platform, DystoniaNet, to automatically identify and validate a microstructural neural network biomarker for dystonia diagnosis from raw structu

The microscopic anatomy and physiology of the mammalian saccadic system.

A central goal of the Neurosciences is to provide an account of how the brain works in terms of cell groups organised into pattern generating networks. This review focuses on the neural network that generates the rapid movements of the eyes that are called saccades. A brief description of the metrical and dynamical properties of saccades is provided first. Data obtained from lesion and electrical stimulation experiments are then described; these indicate that the relevant neural machinery spreads over at least 10 distinct cortical and subcortical regions of the brain. Each one of these regions

Distributed cortico-subcortical networks enable robust speech state detection from sparse intracranial recordings.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate and reliable detection of speech state transitions is a prerequisite for practical speech brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). While cortical language areas have been extensively studied, it remains unclear whether speech onset information is exclusively localized to these regions or distributed across a broader cortico-subcortical network. Here, we investigated the feasibility of decoding speech state transitions using sparse stereo-electroencephalography (SEEG) recordings that sample both cortical and subcortical structures. METHODS: Four Mandarin-speaking epilepsy patie

Beyond where to how: a machine learning approach for sensing mobility contexts using smartphone sensors.

This paper presents the results of research on the use of smartphone sensors (namely, GPS and accelerometers), geospatial information (points of interest, such as bus stops and train stations) and machine learning (ML) to sense mobility contexts. Our goal is to develop techniques to continuously and automatically detect a smartphone user's mobility activities, including walking, running, driving and using a bus or train, in real-time or near-real-time (<5 s). We investigated a wide range of supervised learning techniques for classification, including decision trees (DT), support vector machine

MemAF-KTCBM: a Memory-Aware Fractional optimisation-enabled deep learning model for atherosclerosis classification.

Atherosclerosis, a chronic vascular disorder caused by the abnormal functioning of blood vessels, remains a major contributor to cardiovascular diseases. Although recent advances in machine learning and deep learning have improved atherosclerosis classification, several critical challenges persist, particularly class imbalance, high computational complexity, limited interpretability, and poor generalisation, which constrain their clinical utility. To address these limitations, this paper proposes a novel Memory-Aware Fractional optimisation-assisted Knowledge-distilled mutual-conditioned dynam

KGTC-DDA:Drug-disease association prediction based on parallel graph isomorphism and transformer networks with cross-attention.

Drug development is a complex, time-consuming, and costly process, making drug repurposing an important strategy for identifying new therapeutic applications for existing drugs. Computational drug-disease association (DDA) prediction has therefore attracted increasing attention in recent years. Although many existing methods incorporate similarity information and graph neural networks for DDA prediction, effectively capturing both local structural patterns and global dependencies, as well as modeling complex interactions between drugs and diseases, remains challenging. To address these limitat

Diagnostic accuracy of 3D deep-learning-based fully automated estimation of patient-level minimum fractional flow reserve from coronary computed tomography angiography.

AIMS: Although deep-learning algorithms have been used to compute fractional flow reserve (FFR) from coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA), no study has achieved 'fully automated' (i.e. free from human input) FFR calculation using deep-learning algorithms. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the accuracy of a fully automated 3D deep-learning model for estimating minimum FFR from CCTA data, with invasive FFR as the reference standard. METHODS AND RESULTS: This retrospective study of 1052 patients included 131 patients whose CCTA studies showed 30-90% stenosis and underwent invas

Enhancement of cross-modal associative memory through memristive neural networks utilizing parallel programmable reverse-complementary crossbar arrays circuit.

Cross-modal memories play a pivotal role in retrieving and understanding multifaceted information associated with identical entities. However, hardware implementations of parallel-programmable cross-modal associative memory networks have remained elusive. Memristors, nanoscale devices that emulate synaptic connectivity in the brain, offer a compelling platform for circuit-level neural-inspired architectures. In this work, we present a parallel-programmable cross-modal associative memory network circuit that leverages reverse-complementary memristor crossbar arrays. This design enables parallel

Enhanced RGB-D feature extraction for 6D pose estimation.

The 6D pose estimation of objects plays a crucial role in robot sorting technology. To simultaneously improve the accuracy and efficiency of pose estimation during the grasping process, this study proposes an innovative deep learning pose estimation method based on PVN3D. Specifically, this study deeply optimized the backbone network of the image extraction model, using dense connections and learnable grouped convolutions to improve model accuracy and reduce model complexity. At the same time, the core idea of convolutional neural networks is integrated into the point cloud feature extraction

Explicit error coding can mediate gain recalibration in continuous bump attractor networks.

Continuous bump attractor networks (CBANs) are a prevailing model for how neural circuits represent continuous variables. CBANs maintain these representations by temporally integrating inputs that encode differential (i.e., incremental) changes to a given variable. The accuracy of this computation hinges on a precisely tuned integration gain. Experiments have shown that the brain can recalibrate this gain using ground-truth sensory information, yet existing CBAN models rely on biologically implausible or currently unknown plasticity rules for recalibration. Here, we demonstrate that ring-type
