Evaluation of some air pollution indicators in Turkey.

This article intends to shed a light on air quality in Turkey and compare air pollutant emissions on a national scale with that of the European countries. In order to estimate the quantities of Turkish emissions in the past and their future predictions, a national emission inventory was prepared with respect to five major pollutants consisting of particulate matter(PM), SOx, NOx, non-methane volatile organic compounds, and CO with 5-year intervals between 1985 and 2005. The results suggest that Turkey is a rather large emission source at the European scale, although emission indicators on unit…

Peak expiratory flow variability, bronchial responsiveness, and susceptibility to ambient air pollution in adults.

Bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) and peak expiratory flow (PEF) variability are associated expressions of airway lability, yet probably r … symptoms, cough, and phlegm were collected in 189 subjects (48-73 yr). The acute effects (lag0) of particulate matter with a diameter less than 10 micrometers (PM10), black smoke, SO2 and NO2 on the prevalence of symptoms were estimated with logistic regression. In subjects with airway lability, both when expressed as PEF variability (69%) and BHR (28%), the preval …

Climate Factors, Air Pollutants, and Extreme Events Shape Influenza Risk in China: A Hospital-Based Case-Crossover and Machine-Learning Study.

Although the link between seasonal influenza and environment has been established, the heterogeneous impacts of climate extreme events with … d with influenza risk. Machine learning models indicate that atmospheric temperature, humidity, and particulate matter may be the primary contributors. Co-exposure to extreme events showed a higher joint risk than single exposure, with a significant submultiplicative interaction on the multiplicative scale and no evidence of additive interaction. IL-17 Signaling Pathway: A Potential Signaling Pathway Mediating Neuroinflammation Induced by PM2.5.

Particulate Matter 2.5 (PM2.5) in the atmosphere can invade the central nervous system (CNS) and induce neurotoxicity, yet the mechanism is not well understood. In this study, the viability of microglia was significantly reduced by PM2.5, and the alteration of several inflammatory factors indicated an inflammatory response in BV2 cells caused by PM2.5. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were then screened by a microarray assay. These DEGs were mainly enriched in terms associated with inflammatory reactions through Gene Ontology (GO) annotation. Additionally, the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes …

Mechanisms of POM-mediated Hg immobilization and MeHg suppression in paddy soil: a perspective of coupled geochemical and microbial processes under water management.

Particulate organic matter (POM) plays a critical role in Hg biogeochemistry, yet its immobilization mechanisms and interactions with water management remain unclear. This study investigated POM-mediated Hg immobilization under non-flooded and flooded conditions through a 120-day incubation experiment, combined with batch adsorption, multi-technique characterization, and microbial community analysis. POM addition significantly reduced soil available Hg and promoted the redistribution of Hg to operationally defined less-labile or residual fractions, with available Hg reduction reaching 82% unde

Extreme, Accumulated, and Lagged Exposure to Fire-Sourced PM2.5 and Site-specific Cancer Risk in China.

Fire-sourced fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is a chemically distinct component of ambient air pollution, but its association with site-specific cancer risk remains poorly understood. Here we examine associations between fire-sourced PM2.5 and multiple site-specific cancers across China using lagged, accumulated and extreme exposure metrics, and compare them with those for all-source PM2.5. Fire-sourced PM2.5 is positively associated with several cancers, although the pattern varies by exposure metric and cancer site. Lagged and accumulated exposures show the broadest associations, particularl…

Revisiting Quinone-Induced Oxidative Stress via Structure-Related Protein Alkylation.

Quinones and transition metals are two major chemical components in particulate matter (PM) driving oxidative potentials, but their relative contributions are inconsistent between acellular and cellular assays. In this study, we examined the structure-related oxidative potentials of 8 quinones and 6 transition metals, using both acellular (DTT) and cellular (Nrf2) assays. Transition metals showed high DTT but low Nrf2 responses, while quinones displayed strong Nrf2 responses and moderate DTT responses, indicating that quinones can induce cellular oxidative stress via additional ROS-independent…

From exposure to infection: mechanisms linking emerging pollutants to increased viral susceptibility.

Emerging pollutants (EPs) - including microplastics (MPs), nanoplastics (NPs), pesticides, antibiotics (ABX), particulate matter (PM), and heavy metals (HMs) - are pervasive environmental contaminants increasingly recognized as critical non-infectious co-factors in viral pathogenesis. While epidemiological evidence links chronic environmental exposure to EPs with heightened respiratory viral morbidity, the biological plausibility and cellular trajectories driving this susceptibility remain incompletely defined. This review synthesizes current epidemiological, toxicological, and immunological i…

Blazing a Trail for Fire Management and Smoke Health Collaboration: Takeaways From the 2024 Rocky Mountain Wildfire Smoke Symposium.

Wildfire activity in the United States is increasing due to climate change, land management practices, and human ignitions, reversing decades of air quality progress. Wildfire is an essential process in fire-adapted ecosystems, but fine particulate matter (PM2.5) from wildfire smoke poses significant health risks both near the fire source and in communities far from fire-prone areas. Public health and forest management are often viewed as having conflicting goals-reducing smoke exposure versus restoring fire to ecosystems-but opportunities for collaboration exist. We analyzed an interdisciplin…

Evaluating Graph-Centrality Context for Station-Level Correction of CAMS Air Quality Reanalysis in Lombardy from 2018 to 2021.

Monitoring air quality is critical for understanding pollution impacts on public health. The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) provides estimates of nitrogen oxides (NOx), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and inhalable coarse particles (PM10), but its spatial resolution may limit accuracy at individual urban stations. This study introduces a graph centrality-based framework for station-level correction of CAMS European reanalysis data using in situ observations from ARPA Lombardia (2018 to 2021). Stations are modelled as nodes in a multiplex graph, with spa…

Biomimetic dual-network nanofibrous aerogels with robust interfacial assembly for multifunctional air filtration.

Air pollution in livestock farms involves particulate matter (PM), ammonia (NH3), and airborne microorganisms, creating a need for filtration materials with high efficiency, humidity resistance, multifunctionality, and environmental sustainability. Herein, a biomimetic Zein/Curcumin (Cur) nanofiber-down fiber (DF) aerogel (ZCND) was developed through humidity-induced electrospinning and freeze-drying, inspired by the dual-network architecture of natural sponges. Grooved Zein/Cur nanofibers served as a flagella-like interception network, while DFs acted as a spicule-like reinforcing scaffold, f…

Gut Microbiomes of Marine Zooplankton: Consequences for Host Performance, the Biological Carbon Pump, and Prokaryote Biogeography.

Marine zooplankton are a link between primary producers and higher trophic levels and play a pivotal role in organic matter export via diel vertical migration and faecal-pellet production. Molecular surveys have revealed each individual as a holobiont hosting dense, taxonomically structured microbiomes in the gut, on the cuticle, and within feeding structures. These microbial partners expand dietary breadth through carbohydrate-active enzymes, supply limiting vitamins, detoxify xenobiotics, and may buffer thermal and oxidative stress, thereby influencing host fitness and the fate of particulat

The exposome-autoimmunity axis: environmental xenobiotics, gut dysbiosis, and potential pathways to immunosenescence.

The escalating incidence of autoimmune diseases cannot be fully explained by genetics alone. It is increasingly linked to the exposome-the cumulative burden of lifelong environmental exposures. This review examines how pollutants (particulate matter, microplastics, agrochemicals, heavy metals) reshape the gut microbiota-immune axis and disrupt intestinal homeostasis. This triggers profound dysbiosis, characterized by reduced commensal diversity and expanded pathobionts. We highlight three mechanisms driving pollution-induced immune reprogramming: (i) barrier compromise facilitating metabolic e…
