OBJECTIVE: To summarize current knowledge regarding the opportunistic dimorphic fungal pathogen Penicillium marneffei. Clinical presentation, differential diagnosis, mycology, histopathology, diagnostic serology, in vitro antifungal agent susceptibility testing, and therapy are discussed for human immunodeficiency virus-infected individuals primarily living in Southeast Asia.

Several species of scolopenders (Chilopoda: Scolopendridae), with their bites, are often cause of a local burning pain, redness, edema and sometimes leading to an erysipelas-like state. The present note deals with the main morphological characteristics useful for identificating of Scolopendra cingulata, the most common Italian species of Scolopendridae. Moreover, biology, ecology and medical aspects of the bite are discussed and two human cases due to S. cingulata bite occurred in Latium region (Italy) are described.

A 32-year-old Italian man developed fever and general malaise 3 weeks after arrival in Zaïre. Malaria was diagnosed by a thick blood film, but consequent treatment with quinine was unsuccessful. After repatriation, the diagnosis of early stage sleeping sickness was established. Treatment with eflornithine (Ornidyl) resulted in complete recovery.

Two siblings with Cockayne's syndrome (CS) are described. Both showed cachectic dwarfism, photosensitivity and progressive neurological dysfunction. The damped-rotation test revealed no vestibular nystagmus in one of them, and reduced per-rotatory nystagmus in the other. We report the clinical features, electrophysiological studies, sural nerve pathology and recovery course of carbon disulfide-(CS2) induced polyneuropathy in a 48-year-old man who worked in a viscose rayon plant. PURPOSE: To study the incidence and the etiology of the cardiac lesions in AIDS patients.
METHODS: The autopsy protocols and the filled slides of the heart from 73 consecutive AIDS patients were reviewed. There were, at least, 2 slides of each heart stained by haematoxylin-eosin; when indicated, Ziehl-Nielsen, Gram and Gomori Grocott stains were used.

The pupil cycle time (PCT) was estimated in 384 leprosy patients whose eyes looked normal on clinical examination and in an equal number of healthy controls. A statistically significant increase in PCT (p < 0.05) was noticed in leprosy patients, and corroborates the view that the ocular autonomic system may be affected without any visible clinical pathology in the eye. This three-part article examines the histologic and morphologic basis for stenotic and purely regurgitant tricuspid valves. In Part III, morphometric analysis of tricuspid valve annular circumference, leaflet area, and the product of annular circumference and leaflet area are shown to be useful in establishing etiology for the purely regurgitant tricuspid valves and in assessing the anatomic basis of pure tricuspid regurgitation in the presence of mitral stenosis.
