Effect of three weeks of continuous positive airway pressure treatment on mood in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea: a randomized placebo-controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) commonly have mood symptoms such as depression and anxiety. However, the results of randomized controlled trials on the therapeutic effect of CPAP on mood symptoms have been inconsistent. The present study examined whether three weeks of CPAP treatment had specific therapeutic effects on mood symptoms in patients with OSA compared with placebo. METHODS: A double-blind, parallel, randomized controlled trial using therapeutic and placebo CPAP was performed in 71 patients newly diagnosed with OSA (apnoea-hypopnoea index [AHI]⩾10). Mood was

Abnormal regional brain activity during rest and (anticipated) gastric distension in functional dyspepsia and the role of anxiety: a H(2)(15)O-PET study.

OBJECTIVES: During gastric distension in hypersensitive functional dyspepsia (FD), activation was found in somatosensory cortex (SI/SII) and ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (vlPFC) but, contrary to controls, not in pregenual anterior cingulate (pACC). The aims of this article were to study (i) cortical activations and deactivations during distension and sham compared with baseline in FD, regardless of sensitivity status; (ii) differences in brain activity between health and FD during "no distension" conditions; and (iii) the relationship between anxiety and brain activity in FD. METHODS: Brai

Regular use of prescribed opioids: association with common psychiatric disorders.

Use of opioids for chronic non-cancer pain is increasing, but the clinical epidemiology and standards of care for this practice are poorly defined. Psychiatric disorders are associated with increased physical symptoms and may be associated with opioid use. We performed a secondary analysis of cross-sectional data from the Health Care for Communities (HCC) survey conducted in 1997-1998 (N=9279) to determine the association of psychiatric disorders and self-reported regular use of prescribed opioids within the past year. Regular prescription opioid use was reported by 282 (3%) respondents. In un

Evaluating an etiologically relevant platform for therapy development for temporal lobe epilepsy: effects of carbamazepine and valproic acid on acute seizures and chronic behavioral comorbidities in the Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus mouse model.

Central nervous system infections can underlie the development of epilepsy, and Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus (TMEV) infection in C57BL/6J mice provides a novel model of infection-induced epilepsy. Approximately 50-65% of infected mice develop acute, handling-induced seizures during the infection. Brains display acute neuropathology, and a high number of mice develop spontaneous, recurrent seizures and behavioral comorbidities weeks later. This study characterized the utility of this model for drug testing by assessing whether antiseizure drug treatment during the acute infection pe

Lack of seipin in neurons results in anxiety- and depression-like behaviors via down regulation of PPARγ.

The Seipin gene was originally found to be responsible for type 2 congenital lipodystrophy and involved in lipid droplet formation. Seipin is highly expressed in the central nervous system as well. Seipin mutations have been identified in motor neuron diseases such as Silver syndrome and spastic paraplegia. In this study, we generated neuron-specific seipin knockout mice (seipin-nKO) to investigate the influence of seipin deficiency on locomotion and affective behaviors. In comparison with control mice, 8-week-old male seipin-nKO mice, but not female mice, displayed anxiety- and depression-lik

Association of the anxiogenic and alerting effects of caffeine with ADORA2A and ADORA1 polymorphisms and habitual level of caffeine consumption.

Caffeine, a widely consumed adenosine A(1) and A(2A) receptor antagonist, is valued as a psychostimulant, but it is also anxiogenic. An association between a variant within the ADORA2A gene (rs5751876) and caffeine-induced anxiety has been reported for individuals who habitually consume little caffeine. This study investigated whether this single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) might also affect habitual caffeine intake, and whether habitual intake might moderate the anxiogenic effect of caffeine. Participants were 162 non-/low (NL) and 217 medium/high (MH) caffeine consumers. In a randomized, d

Differential acute psychomotor and cognitive effects of diazepam on long-term benzodiazepine users.

The aim of this study is to determine whether long-term use (5-20 years) of therapeutic doses of diazepam (5-20 mg/day) in anxious patients (n = 28) is associated with tolerance to its psychomotor and cognitive effects. Patients were tested at baseline, before and after a 10 mg oral dose of diazepam during chronic use, and at 3 weeks and 10 months after benzodiazepine (BZ) discontinuation. The effects of a single i.v. dose of flumazenil (1 mg administered 5 days before baseline) on reversing tolerance were also assessed. No acute effect of diazepam was observed on the psychomotor performance o

Nonregular Physical Activity and Handgrip Strength as Indicators of Fatigue and Psychological Distress in Cancer Survivors.

BACKGROUND: Cancer survivors who do not engage in regular physical activity often experience persistent psychological distress and fatigue, which can significantly impact their quality of life. While handgrip strength (HGS) is recognized as an indicator of overall health and physical resilience, the combined role of HGS and physical inactivity in predicting psychological distress and fatigue in this population remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the relationships between self-reported physical inactivity, HGS, and psychological distress, specifically depressive symptoms, anxiety, and

The effect of medical clowning on reducing pain, crying, and anxiety in children aged 2-10 years old undergoing venous blood drawing--a randomized controlled study.

UNLABELLED: Recently, the utilization of medical clowns to reduce anxiety, stress, and even pain associated with hospitalization has become popular. However, the scientific basis of this benefit and outcome is scant. Venipuncture and IV cannulation are very common sources of pain in ill children. To reduce pain, one common approach is to apply a local anesthetic prior to the procedure. In the current study, we sought to compare the utilization of medical clowning in this process with two control groups: (1) local anesthetic cream (EMLA®, Astrazeneca, London, UK) applied prior to the procedure

Behavioral and psychological characteristics of adolescents under different Parent-Child relationship patterns: a gender-based perspective.

BACKGROUND: The Parent-Child Relationship plays a crucial role in the development of adolescents' psychological behaviors. Previous studies have confirmed its association with adolescents' cognitive development, academic performance, and emotional regulation, and have identified gender differences in this association. However, current research lacks a systematic integrated analysis of multi-dimensional variables such as physical-psychological-social adaptation. It also fails to identify the heterogeneity of the Parent-Child Relationship from a gender perspective and has not conducted in-depth

Successful use of closed-loop allostatic neurotechnology for post-traumatic stress symptoms in military personnel: self-reported and autonomic improvements.

BACKGROUND: Military-related post-traumatic stress (PTS) is associated with numerous symptom clusters and diminished autonomic cardiovascular regulation. High-resolution, relational, resonance-based, electroencephalic mirroring (HIRREM®) is a noninvasive, closed-loop, allostatic, acoustic stimulation neurotechnology that produces real-time translation of dominant brain frequencies into audible tones of variable pitch and timing to support the auto-calibration of neural oscillations. We report clinical, autonomic, and functional effects after the use of HIRREM® for symptoms of military-related
