CPAP treats muscle cramps in patients with obstructive sleep apnea.

We describe a case series of 4 patients with varying degrees of obstructive sleep apnea who incidentally had a history of nocturnal leg cramps. None of the patients had periodic limb movements during the study and denied symptoms consistent with restless legs syndrome. In 3 of the 4 patients, nocturnal leg cramps resolved with CPAP treatment for OSA, while the fourth patient noted near-resolution of cramping after starting CPAP. In patients presenting with muscle cramps, obstructive sleep apnea should be considered.

Ambulatory models of care for obstructive sleep apnoea: Diagnosis and management.

The high prevalence of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and increasing awareness of its potential health consequences has placed significant pressure on laboratory-based sleep services leading to growing waiting lists and delays in diagnosis and treatment. Consequently, there has been increasing interest in the use of simplified, ambulatory models of care involving clinical prediction tools, portable sleep monitoring and home autotitrating continuous positive airway pressure. Researchers are also exploring the potential role for a wider range of health-care providers, including trained nurses an

Sleepiness and nocturnal hypoxemia in Peruvian men with obstructive sleep apnea.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the intensity of nocturnal hypoxemia associated with sleepiness in Peruvian men with a diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). METHODS: We carried out a secondary data analysis based on a study which includes patients with OSA who were seen in a private hospital in Lima, Peru from 2006 to 2012. We included male adults who had polysomnographic recordings and who answered the Epworth sleepiness scale (ESE). The intensity of nocturnal hypoxemia (oxygen saturation ≤90%) was classified in four new categories: 0, <1, 1 to 10 and >10% total sleep time with nocturnal hypoxemi

Is shortened sleep duration a risk factor for overweight and obesity during adolescence? A review of the empirical literature.

This paper reviews 15 adolescent (10-19 yrs) studies that have directly investigated the effects of shortened sleep duration on overweight and obesity. The research studies included in this review inconsistently found significant effects between shortened sleep duration and weight status. This heterogeneity in study findings largely resulted from variability in study design, gender, and the method used to measure sleep duration. Consequently, due to the conflicting research findings, it remains inconclusive as to whether shortened sleep is a risk factor for overweight or obesity during adolesc

An analysis of the kangaroo care intervention using neonatal EEG complexity: a preliminary study.

OBJECTIVE: Skin-to-skin contact (SSC) promotes physiological stability and interaction between parents and infants. Temporal analyses of predictability in EEG-sleep time series can elucidate functional brain maturation between SSC and non-SSC cohorts at similar post-menstrual ages (PMAs). METHODS: Sixteen EEG-sleep studies were performed on eight preterm infants who received 8 weeks of SSC, and compared with two non-SSC cohorts at term (N=126) that include a preterm group corrected to term age and a full term group. Two time series measures of predictability were used for comparisons. RESULT

Unusual respiratory manifestations in two young adults with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Adult respirologists are often involved in the evaluation and treatment of young adult patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. In this context, the most frequent respiratory complication is nocturnal and daytime hypoventilation related to respiratory muscle weakness. The present article describes cases of Duchenne muscular dystrophy involving two brothers, 17 and 19 years of age, respectively, who presented with less frequently reported respiratory complications of their disease: obstructive sleep apnea and Cheyne-Stokes respiration with central apnea, which were believed to be partially or

The effect of raising the bite without mandibular protrusion on obstructive sleep apnoea.

It has recently been suggested that wearing a maxillary occlusal splint (i.e. a hard acrylic resin dental appliance that covers the occlusal surfaces of the maxillary dentition and that is being indicated for the treatment of, e.g. temporomandibular pain) may be associated with a risk of aggravating obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). The present study tested the hypothesis that raising the bite without mandibular protrusion in OSA patients is associated with an increase in the apnoea-hypopnoea index (AHI). Eighteen OSA patients (13 men; 49·5 ± 8·1 years old) received a mandibular advancement devi

Different sleep onset criteria at the multiple sleep latency test (MSLT): an additional marker to differentiate central nervous system (CNS) hypersomnias.

Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) has different correlates in non-rapid eye movement (NREM) [idiopathic hypersomnia (IH) without long sleep time] and REM sleep [narcolepsy without cataplexy (NwoC) and narcolepsy with cataplexy (NC)]-related hypersomnias of central origin. We analysed sleep onset characteristics at the multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) applying simultaneously two sleep onset criteria in 44 NC, seven NwoC and 16 IH consecutive patients referred for subjective EDS complaint. Sleep latency (SL) at MSLT was assessed both as the time elapsed to the occurrence of a single epoch of

Classification of sleep apnea types using wavelet packet analysis of short-term ECG signals.

OBJECTIVE: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) causes a pause in airflow with reduced breathing effort. In contrast, central sleep apnea (CSA) event is not accompanied with breathing effort. The aim of this study is to differentiate CSA and OSA events using wavelet packet analysis and support vector machines of ECG signals over 5 s period. METHODS: Eight level wavelet packet analysis was performed on each 5 s clip using Daubechies (DB3) mother wavelet and for comparison discrete wavelet analysis was performed using Symlet (SYM3) wavelets. The choice of wavelet basis function was based on a grid sea

Selective REM sleep deprivation in narcolepsy.

Narcolepsy is characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep abnormalities, including cataplexy. The aim of this study was to assess REM sleep pressure and homeostasis in narcolepsy. Six patients with narcolepsy and six healthy controls underwent a REM sleep deprivation protocol, including one habituation, one baseline, two deprivation nights (D1, D2) and one recovery night. Multiple sleep latency tests (MSLTs) were performed during the day after baseline and after D2. During D1 and D2 REM sleep was prevented by awakening the subjects at the first polysomnogra
