Effect of luggage type on gait parameters using in-shoe motion sensors.

Walking with luggage is a common daily activity. While its effects on gait and posture have been explored, most findings are based on laboratory measurements rather than real-world conditions. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the effects of walking with luggage on gait and posture in everyday environments using an in-shoe motion sensor system. Gait parameters of 26 healthy, pain-free young adults were assessed over a 10-minute period under four conditions: no luggage, using a backpack, a shoulder bag, and a crossbody bag. Gait data were recorded at 2-minute intervals using an in…

Spinal compensation patterns in dropped head syndrome according to prone-position cervical extension performance.

BACKGROUND: Dropped Head Syndrome (DHS) is caused by muscle weakness of the cervical extensor muscles (CEM), resulting in global imbalance. However, the relationship between CEM weakness and sagittal spinal alignment remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between CEM weakness and global spinal posture in patients with DHS. METHODS: The subjects were 159 patients diagnosed with DHS. CEM was evaluated by cervical extension performance in the prone position, and the subjects were classified into Mild DHS (MMT≥3; 33 subjects) and Severe DHS (MMT<3; 126 subje…

Passive neck brace for surgeons.

A surgeon peers downward into a body cavity when operating. Holding this position for hours across weeks, months, and years may lead to neck pain and musculoskeletal disorders. We were inspired by ungulates such as giraffes and horses, which use dorsal-ventral flexion to graze for 9-14 h per day without perceivable neck pain. Ungulates evolved a strong nuchal ligament that relieves neck muscles by stretching to support some of the weight of the head during grazing or running. In contrast, humans evolved an upright posture, and like many primates, have a reduced nuchal ligament. The goal of thi…

Characterizing the Effects of Adding Virtual and Augmented Reality in Robot-Assisted Training.

Extended reality (XR) technology combines physical reality with computer synthetic virtuality to deliver immersive experience to users. Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are two subdomains within XR with different immersion levels. Both of these have the potential to be combined with robot-assisted training protocols to maximize postural control improvement. In this study, we conducted a randomized control experiment with sixty-three healthy subjects to compare the effectiveness of robot-assisted posture training combined with VR or AR against robotic training alone. A robotic Tr…

Factors influencing spontaneous hypothermia after emergency trauma and the construction of a predictive model.

This study aimed to investigate spontaneous hypothermia among emergency trauma patients and develop a predictive model. A cohort of 162 emergency trauma patients was categorized into hypothermic (n = 61) and control (n = 101) groups, with trauma severity assessed using the modified Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS). Univariate analysis revealed significant differences between the groups in trauma severity, posture, garment wetness, warming measures, pre-hospital fluid resuscitation, and modified GCS scores (P < 0.05). The hypothermic group exhibited lower prothrombin time compared to the control group …

Pediatric Rehabilitation for Walking Difficulty and Calf Muscle Pain in a 13-Year-Old Male With Spastic Diplegic Cerebral Palsy and Clubfoot Deformity: A Case Report.

Cerebral palsy (CP) manifests as atypical muscle tone, posture, and movement, and is classified into four main types: extrapyramidal (dyskinetic), spastic quadriplegia, spastic hemiplegia, and spastic diplegia. Patients with CP might move awkwardly because of this since it indicates that their muscles are tense. We report the case of a 13-year-old child who complained of soreness in his right calf muscle and trouble walking over the previous two years. His condition is recognized as spastic diplegic CP. This report aims to understand the impact of neurophysiotherapy procedures in the context o…

Robustness of lateral tongue bracing under bite block perturbation.

Lateral tongue bracing is a lingual posture in which the sides of the tongue are held against the palate and upper molars, and has been observed cross-linguistically. However, it is unknown whether lateral bracing makes adjustments to external perturbation like other body postures. The present study aims to test the robustness of lateral tongue bracing with three experiments. The first baseline experiment was an analysis of an electropalatogram database and the results showed lateral bracing being continuously maintained. The second experiment applied an external perturbation during speech pro…

Vestibular motor control.

The vestibular system is an essential sensory system that generates motor reflexes that are crucial for our daily activities, including stabilizing the visual axis of gaze and maintaining head and body posture. In addition, the vestibular system provides us with our sense of movement and orientation relative to space and serves a vital role in ensuring accurate voluntary behaviors. Neurophysiological studies have provided fundamental insights into the functional circuitry of vestibular motor pathways. A unique feature of the vestibular system compared to other sensory systems is that the same …
