We conducted a randomized, prospective study of moxalactam versus gentamicin plus clindamycin in 42 patients with penetrating abdominal trauma. Patients were randomized to receive intravenously either 2 grams of moxalactam every 12 hours or 80 milligrams of gentamicin every eight hours and 600 milligrams of clindamycin every six hours. Antibiotics were administered preoperatively and continued for a minimum of five days if hollow viscus injury occurred. From a prospective epidemiological study of peptic ulcer disease in the northern part of Norway, incidence rates for gastric and duodenal ulcer are presented. Over a 3-year period 4234 patients were examined radiologically or endoscopically. The population at risk was 72,537 persons, 16 to 93 years old. The yearly incidence rate for gastric ulcer in women was 0.9 per 1000 and for men 1.4 per 1000. For duodenal ulcer the incidence rates were 0.8 and 1.5 per 1000, respectively. The ratio of gastric ulcer to duodenal ulcer is still 1 to 1.1 for both sexes, 1 to 0.9 in women, and 1 to 1.14 in men

The authors report on a prospective study on small-bowel radiography, comparing conventional barium follow-through, single-contrast enteroclysis (Sellink's method) and double-contrast enteroclysis. Enteroclysis appeared to be superior even when the follow-through was done with frequent fluoroscopy and large amounts of contrast medium. Single and double-contrast techniques did not differ essentially in image quality. Single-contrast technique being less time-consuming is to be preferred.

40 patients with idiopathic optic neuritis (ON) between 1st January 1967 and 31st December 1977 have been checked again from oculistic and neurological point of view between 1st January and 31st March 1983. 10 of 40 examined patients (25%) are found suffering from multiple sclerosis (MS) at the time of check up. Our research points out that idiopathic ON evolutive risk towards MS is greater in females, in people between 20 and 40 years old, in people with one or more relapses as well as in people with neurological microsymptoms at the time of ON.

We compared the clinical associations, arteriographic findings, and long-term outcome of 93 patients with amaurosis fugax and 212 patients with focal cerebral ischemia (transient ischemic attacks [TIAs]). A cross-sectional study of morbidity associated with Schistosoma mansoni infection in an area in North-East Brazil where the disease is endemic was carried out in 1974. Fifty-five Thai patients with chronic diarrhoea were prospectively studied to find out the underlying causes. The aetiology was identified in 38.2%, uncertain in 29.1%, and unknown in 32.7% of the patients. Columnar epithelium-lined oesophagus (CELO) is an acquired disorder associated with a high incidence of cancer. CELO consists of three histological types of epithelium: gastric-fundic, junctional, and specialised columnar, the last resembling intestinal metaplasia of the stomach. Analysis of experience with chronic bleeding peptic ulcer in 504 patients, admitted from 1960 to 1971, shows a hospital mortality of 12%. This retrospective review suggested that early endoscopic diagnosis, adequate resuscitation and a policy of early selective surgery was necessary if mortality was to be reduced. There are presented the results of a prospective study aimed at establishing the incidence of impaired carbohydrate tolerance in a nonorganized population of middle-aged males, which in a 6.5-year follow-up accounted for 42.2 and 40.3%, respectively. In 193 consecutive children with bilateral secretory otitis, intubation and adenoidectomy were performed on the right ear and paracentesis on the left. Changes in the ear drum were analysed at re-evaluation one to three years after operation.
