AIMS: In this study, three facile repetitive-sequence PCR (rep-PCR) techniques have been compared with the pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) method for differentiating the genetic relatedness of clinical Stenotrophomonas maltophilia isolates.

Two major outbreaks of invasive meningococcal disease serogroup C (IMD-C) were identified in British Columbia between 2000 and 2004. Apicomplexa are a phylum of obligate intracellular parasites critically dependent on invasion of a host cell. An in vitro assay for erythrocyte invasion by Babesia bovis was established, employing free merozoites obtained after the application of high-voltage to the parasitised erythrocytes. Serial, detailed assessments of left ventricular output (LVO) in critically ill very low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants of four different gestational ages were performed in the early neonatal period using pulsed Doppler echocardiography. Hair growth after reconstructive surgery for auricular malformations including microtia and full-thickness skin grafts poses serious problems for patients. Currently, the author and his colleagues use a long-pulsed alexandrite laser system with a cooling device to remove hair from hairy regions before and after reconstructive surgery of auricular malformations. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and coagulase gene restriction profile (CRP) analysis techniques were used to analyze 71 Staphylococcus aureus isolates recovered from nine food-borne disease outbreaks. Twenty-two PFGE profiles and 11 CRPs were identified, with discrimination indices of 0.86 and 0.72, respectively. In addition, the variable regions of the coagulase genes of 39 isolates were sequenced and showed extensive identity, indicating that this is not an efficient alternative for the molecular typing of S. aureus.

In order to characterize the subtypes of Salmonella typhi which cause sporadic disease in Taiwan, 55 isolates of Salm. typhi obtained from unrelated patients of sporadic cases during 1992-96 were subjected to chromosomal DNA digestion and pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE).
