In 36 patients who consulted for fecal incontinence or rectal pain, or both, there was grossly visible scarring of the rectum and biopsy revealed mucosal atrophy and fibrosis. A steal from the hemorrhoidal arteries to the iliac vessels was demonstrated in 3 subjects. Based on animal experiments, spinal root anastomoses were performed in two paraplegic patients who had traumatic lesions of the conus medullaris. The aim was to reinnervate the paralyzed urinary bladder. Six patients with bilateral internal carotid artery occlusion who presented with sudden loss of consciousness, quadriplegia, and initially intact brainstem reflexes are described. They soon lost brainstem reflexes and died within 3 days. The presumed causes of internal carotid artery occlusion were atherothrombosis in three patients and cardiogenic embolism in the others. This catastrophic stroke syndrome mimics severe brainstem stroke and has an extremely poor prognosis.

Intrathecal baclofen has not been previously evaluated for the treatment of the disabling hypertonia associated with hereditary spastic paraparesis. Muscle tone and deep-tendon reflexes were evaluated in three patients with hereditary spastic paraparesis after a double-blind, cross-over bolus injection of intrathecal baclofen. Praxis-induction of seizures is an interesting subset of reflex epilepsy in which seizures are induced by higher mental activities associated with the use of part of the body. Reflex traits have often been described in patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy. We report a patient presenting with praxis-induced myoclonic epilepsy at a late age.
