Background: The objective of this study was to review the outcomes of patients who underwent one-bone forearm (OBF) reconstruction. Methods: A retrospective review of patients who underwent OBF surgery between 1994 and 2014 was undertaken. Patient demographics, etiology, associated injuries, number of surgeries prior to OBF surgery, surgical details, and postoperative information were collected. A telephone interview was conducted at final follow-up, including a Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (QuickDASH) questionnaire, a 10-point scoring system used by Peterson et al, and a s

BACKGROUND: The authors critically analyzed long-term upper extremity outcome after harvest of an osteocutaneous radial forearm free flap by correlating any restrictions in range of motion and strength with patient self-report of disability.
METHODS: Twelve patients who had at least 1 year since surgery were evaluated with a functional examination and with the Disability of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand questionnaire. Functional capacity was quantified by comparing range of motion of the thumbs, digits, and wrists along with pronation and supination of bilateral forearms. Pinch and grip strengt

BACKGROUND: Meniscus and disc lesions in the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) are generally caused by falling accidents with pronated, hyperextended wrists, or by distraction injuries that pull the ulnar side of the wrist out of place. Characteristic clinical signs are swelling and pain in the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) and a 'clicking' noise in the meniscus lesion. If untreated, loss of mobility and grip strength as well as progressive arthritic changes ensue. We investigated in this study the laser-assisted arthroscopic debridement of the central TFCC and meniscus to compare the

Between January 1982 and January 1999, 684 patients presented with a fracture of the clavicle to the accident and emergency departments of the Tamside and Bury District General Hospitals. Twenty patients (3%) subsequently developed symptomatic nonunion of the clavicle. The original injury resulted from a road traffic accident in 13 patients, from a fall on an outstretched hand in five patients, and two patients had sports related injuries. Mean age of the patients was 39 years (range, 17 to 76 years). Mean time from injury to surgery was 2.5 years (range, 6 months to 8 years). Fifteen patients

Virtual surgical planning (VSP) and clinical 3D printing (C3DP) enable patient-specific anatomic models and surgical guides to be developed and produced from medical imaging using additive manufacturing techniques in a health care facility. This affords a level of precision beyond that allowed with conventional techniques, shortens surgical times, decreases rates of surgical complications and blood loss, and improves patient outcomes. The authors outline the general principles of VSP-C3DP used by subject matter experts in the clinical, imaging, engineering, and manufacturing domains, including

BACKGROUND: Increased body mass index (BMI) is a well-documented risk factor for complications after lower extremity arthroplasty. The literature in total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) displays notable variation. The utility of BMI in predicting complications in TSA may be limited because of differences in weight distribution. Prior studies in spine surgery have demonstrated increased complications based on subcutaneous fat depth at the incision site. The purpose of this study was to determine whether tissue depth may be associated with an increased risk of complication after primary TSA.

We hypothesised that the WALANT technique can be consistently replicated and does not demand a high level of skill, and it leads to a higher patient satisfaction rate, improved clinical outcomes, and shorter waiting times compared with an IC-BP block.Forty-eight patients with isolated closed DRF were randomly assigned to the WALANT or IC-BP group. Demographic data, fracture classification, suitability for surgery, preoperative pain scores, and waiting times were collected prospectively. AIMS: The risk factors for recurrent instability (RI) following a primary traumatic anterior shoulder dislocation (PTASD) remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to determine the rate of RI in a large cohort of patients managed nonoperatively after PTASD and to develop a clinical prediction model.
METHODS: A total of 1,293 patients with PTASD managed nonoperatively were identified from a trauma database (mean age 23.3 years (15 to 35); 14.3% female). We assessed the prevalence of RI, and used multivariate regression modelling to evaluate which demographic- and injury-related factors were inde

INTRODUCTION: Osteomyelitis can occur at various osseous locations and commonly presents in the emergency department (ED). The incidence of osteomyelitis is 21.8 cases per 100,000 persons annually.1 Hematogenous osteomyelitis typically occurs in the vertebrae; however, it may seldomly occur in the manubrium. Hematogenous osteomyelitis can be seen in patients with complicated thoracic surgery, radiation, fracture, diabetes, immunosuppression, steroid therapy, and malnutrition.2 Because signs and symptoms of osteomyelitis may be nonspecific, clinicians must have high suspicion based on history a

INTRODUCTION: Despite technological advancements in recent years, glenoid component loosening remains a common complication after anatomical total shoulder arthroplasty (ATSA) and is one of the main causes of revision surgery. Increasing emphasis is placed on the prevention of glenoid component failure. Previous studies have successfully predicted range of motion, patient-reported outcomes and short-term complications after ATSA using machine learning methods, but an accurate predictive model for (glenoid component) revision is currently lacking. This study aims to use a large international da
