We report the case of a 17-year-old boy who was precluded from entering basic military training because of the presence of a giant hairy melanocytic nevus that covered his back. He subsequently underwent total excision of the lesion followed by application of a dermal regeneration matrix, Integra, and split-thickness skin grafting. Ten months following the procedure, his wounds had healed and the reconstructed skin was considered durable enough to withstand the rigors of military training. Childhood sun protection is important to reduce the risk of developing skin cancer later in life. An evaluation of an expanded version of the Sunny Days, Healthy Ways sun safety instructional program was conducted with 744 students in 77 kindergarten to fifth grade classes in 10 elementary schools. Students in six schools received instruction twice over two school years. Students in four schools received it only once in a single school year or were enrolled in a no-treatment control group. A total of 1276 cattle from 76 farms in 8 villages were examined by palpation of the skin for evidence of hypodermosis. The effects of age, sex, breed, and colour of cattle on hypodermosis were investigated. The overall prevalence was 31.9%. The mean number of warble fly larvae on infested animals was 8.46. Hypodermosis infestations were encountered in all the villages visited. Within a herd, the intensity of infestion decreased with the age of cattle. Infestation rates of warble fly larvae were lower in native cattle, in females, and in piebald animals.

This paper presents a dermal replacement technique for cutaneous wounds of diverse origin. An autologous tissue-engineered dermal-like structure was implanted in one patient with an acute surgical excision of a nevus and in another patient with a chronic post-traumatic ulcer. Four cases of spontaneous laryngeal paralysis in juvenile white-coated German shepherd dogs are described. The presenting signs were typical for laryngeal paralysis, with stridor present in all four cases. Laryngoscopy revealed bilateral laryngeal paralysis in three cases, and unilateral paralysis in one. Concurrent megaoesophagus was also identified in one dog. All dogs underwent surgical treatment for laryngeal paralysis. Euthanasia was performed in one case due to intractable regurgitation and aspiration pneumonia. A possible association with white coat colour is discussed.
