Sleep in Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome: disorder of arousal.

Overnight polygraphic sleep studies, which included accelerometry and video monitoring, were performed on 14 Tourette patients before therapy and on 11 age-matched controls. Tourette patients less than 23 years old had a significantly increased percentage of stage 3/4 sleep, had an increased number of awakenings, had a decreased percentage of REM sleep, experienced paroxysmal events during stage 4 sleep, and had motor tics during all stages of sleep. Three patients were treated with tetrabenazine and subsequently showed significant decreases in percentage of total sleep, number of awakenings,

"Mater puerorum'. A medieval naming for an enigmatic children's disease.

The pediatric clinical entity called "Mater Puerorum' appears first in the latin translation of Rhazes' "Practica Puerorum' and in his "Continens'. His descriptions of the disease could give some likeness either to a diagnosis of night terrors, or of hyperpyretic convulsions, or of a slight form of epilepsy. Mater Puerorum is afterwards described by most pediatric authors till the Renaissance period without much originality. Rhazes being one of their main sources anyway. Mater Puerorum has been considered by Still and Radbill as a synonym for hysterical fits in children. Going back to the Arab

Lithium and bipolar disorder: Impacts from molecular to behavioural circadian rhythms.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a severe and common psychiatric disorder. BD pathogenesis, clinical manifestations and relapses are associated with numerous circadian rhythm abnormalities. Lithium (Li) is the first-line treatment in BD, and its therapeutic action has been related to its ability to alter circadian rhythms. We systematically searched the PubMed database until January 2016, aiming to critically examine published studies investigating direct and indirect effects of Li on circadian rhythms. The results, from the 95 retained studies, indicated that Li: acts directly on the molecular clocks

[Prevalence of restless legs syndrome].

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common movement disorder wherein sensory motor symptoms are observed in the limbs mainly during sleep and quiet wakefulness. The diagnostic criteria for RLS were established in 1995 by the International RLS Study Group (IRLSSG) and revised in 2003. The prevalence of RLS in Europe and North America was reported to be between 5% and 12%. On the other hand, the prevalence of RLS in Asia was lesser than that in Europe and North America: it was estimated to be less than 4%. This difference might be associated with vacial, cultural, and language differences. Genetic

Exploring sleep-related problems among concerned others of individuals with mental health problems and/or problematic substance use: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Mental health problems and/or problematic substance use (including alcohol) affect not only the individuals directly involved but also their close family members. Being a concerned other, a partner, parent, or child of someone with mental health problems or problematic substance use can be emotionally demanding and may negatively impact sleep health. This study aimed to examine whether concerned others are at increased risk of sleep-related symptoms compared with individuals without such family-related burdens. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 18,

Sleep-Related Problems in Pediatric Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Intensive Exposure Therapy.

Limited research has examined sleep-related problems (SRPs) among children and adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The present study addresses this gap by investigating preliminary associations between SRPs, demographic factors (gender and age), family variables (family accommodation and parental stress), and clinical factors (medication status, internalizing and externalizing symptoms, OCD severity, OCD-related impairment), and treatment outcomes in a sample of 103 youth (aged 7 to 17 years; 53% female) with a primary diagnosis of OCD. Clinician, parent, and child measures w

Survivors of imprisonment in the Pacific theater during World War II.

Data were obtained from 41 survivors of imprisonment by the Japanese during World War II. Interview data suggested that these individuals, despite the 40 years that had passed since their prisoner of war experiences, showed manifestations of posttraumatic stress disorder, notably a sleep disturbance marked by recurrent nightmares. MMPI data suggested significant pathology, characterized as an anxiety state, in this group. Half of the subjects met the full set of DSM-III criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder.

[Oneirodelirium in paroxysmal hypersomnia with periodic respiration and obstruction of the airway (author's transl)].

Case report on a patient aged 57 with periodic respiration and paroxysmal tendency to fall asleep in daytime. Between sleep and waking he had typical apnoic intervals with passing, but definite, hallucinations. The cause, in accord with the literature, is considered to have been edema of the upper respiratory tract which followed at times on irradiation of a squamous epithelium carcinoma of the roof of the nasopharynx. The psychologic and respiratory disturbances and the attacks of somnolence proved fully reversible after anti-edematous treatment.

Network signatures define consciousness state during focal seizures.

OBJECTIVE: Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder affecting 1% of the global population. Loss of consciousness in focal impaired awareness seizures (FIASs) and focal-to-bilateral tonic-clonic seizures (FBTCSs) can be devastating, but the mechanisms are not well understood. Although ictal activity and interictal connectivity changes have been noted, the network states of focal aware seizures (FASs), FIASs, and FBTCSs have not been thoroughly evaluated with network measures ictally. METHODS: We obtained electrographic data from 74 patients with stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG). Sliding w

Sleep disordered breathing and chronic respiratory failure in patients with chronic pain on long term opioid therapy.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: The use of opioid medication for chronic pain has been increasing. The main aim of this study was to assess how many patients on opioids for chronic pain had sleep disordered breathing (SDB) and the type of SDB. The impact of these medications on daytime arterial blood gas (ABG) measurements and psychomotor vigilance was also studied. METHODS: Twenty-four patients (aged 18-75 years) on long-term opioids were prospectively recruited. Patients underwent home polysomnogram (PSG), psychomotor vigilance testing (PVT), and awake daytime ABG. Overnight PSG findings were compared to

Sleep Quality in Adults with Cancer: Associations with Symptom Burden and Psychological Resilience.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbance is prevalent among adults with cancer and often co-occurs with multiple physical and psychological symptoms. Although resilience has been associated with better sleep outcomes, evidence integrating overall symptom burden and resilience remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To identify factors associated with sleep quality in adults with cancer, focusing on co-occurring symptom burden and resilience. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 159 adults with cancer recruited from a tertiary hospital and online patient communities in the Republic of Korea. Sleep quality w
