Low implicit self-esteem and dysfunctional automatic associations in social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Negative automatic associations towards the self and social cues are assumed to play an important role in social anxiety disorder. We tested whether social anxiety disorder patients (n = 45) showed stronger dysfunctional automatic associations than non-clinical controls (n = 45) and panic disorder patients (n = 24) and whether there existed gender differences in this respect. METHODS: We used a single-target Implicit Association Test and an Implicit Association Test to measure dysfunctional automatic associations with social cues and implicit self-esteem, respective

Predictors of change in functional competence and functional behavior after functional adaptation skills training for schizophrenia.

Functional recovery is an important treatment target in schizophrenia. Although medication is effective at reducing positive symptoms of the disorder, these improvements do not translate to improved functioning. In this study, schizophrenia outpatients (N = 54) received the psychosocial treatment Functional Adaptation Skills Training. Hierarchical regression analyses determined whether baseline neurocognitive, symptom, course of illness, and demographic variables predicted improvement in performance-based measures of functional competence and case manager-rated real-world behavior after the in

Depressed mood in pregnancy: prevalence and correlates in two Cape Town peri-urban settlements.

BACKGROUND: The disability associated with depression and its impact on maternal and child health has important implications for public health policy. While the prevalence of postnatal depression is high, there are no prevalence data on antenatal depression in South Africa. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence and correlates of depressed mood in pregnancy in Cape Town peri-urban settlements. METHODS: This study reports on baseline data collected from the Philani Mentor Mothers Project (PMMP), a community-based, cluster-randomized controlled trial on the outskirts of Cape

'Forensic' labelling: an empirical assessment of its effects on self-stigma for people with severe mental illness.

Increasingly, specialized 'forensic' mental health services are being developed to address the criminogenic and clinical needs of people with mental illness who are involved in the criminal justice system. Theoretically, the construction of such specialized services can produce simultaneous positive benefits and negative consequences. This mixed methods study examined and compared the level of self-stigma that was experienced by people who receive compulsory community-based treatment services in the forensic (n=52) and civil (n=39) mental health systems of British Columbia, Canada. The quantit

Parsing the relationship of stigma and insight to psychological well-being in psychotic disorders.

BACKGROUND: It has been postulated that the effects of the stigma of mental illness on the psychological well-being of patients is mediated through internalization of the stigma. On the other hand, there is reason to suppose that simple awareness of public stigma could also have an impact to the extent that an individual is aware of being ill. AIM: To investigate whether internalization of the stigma of having a psychotic disorder and an interaction between perceived public stigma and awareness of being ill make independent contributions to the prediction of psychological well-being in patien

Quality of life comparison between open and retroperitoneal video-assisted minilaparotomy surgery for kidney donors.

This study compared open and video-assisted minilaparotomy surgery in live kidney donors for quality of life (QoL), pain, cosmesis, and recovery. Between January 2003 and March 2006, we reviewed data from 205 patients who underwent live-donor nephrectomy: 116 by video-assisted minilaparotomy and 89 by open surgery. Pain and satisfaction were evaluated using scales from 1 to 10, and QoL, with the 36-item Short Form questionnaire. Hospital stay was significantly shorter among the video-assisted (5.1 +/- 1.6 days) than the open group (6.9 +/- 1.3 days; P < .01). Time to resumption of walking with

Lives in isolation: stories and struggles of low-income African American women with panic disorder.

Research evidence points to the existence of racial-ethnic disparities in both access to and quality of mental health services for African Americans with panic disorder. Current panic disorder evaluation and treatment paradigms are not responsive to the needs of many African Americans. The primary individual, social, and health-care system factors that limit African Americans' access to care and response to treatment are not well understood. Low-income African American women with panic disorder participated in a series of focus-group sessions designed to elicit (1) their perspectives regarding

Some indicators of nutritional status are associated with activity and exploration in infants at risk for vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

Severe malnutrition, both protein-energy and micronutrient deficiency, results in decreased activity, but the results regarding mild-to-moderate malnutrition are equivocal. Our objective in this investigation was to describe the activity and exploratory behavior of Mexican infants and describe the relationship among nutritional status, activity, and exploration in this population at high risk for mild-to-moderate micronutrient deficiency, but at low risk for severe malnutrition. The participants were infants, 4-12 mo old, of low socioeconomic status from 3 states in southern Mexico. We measure

Financial hardship, socio-economic position and depression: results from the PATH Through Life Survey.

There is a strong association between financial hardship and the experience of depression. Previous longitudinal research differs in whether this association is viewed as a contemporaneous relationship between depression and hardship or whether hardship has a role in the maintenance of existing depression. In this study we investigate the association between depression and hardship over time and seek to resolve these contradictory perspectives. We also investigate the consistency of the association across the lifecourse. This study reports analysis of two waves of data from a large community s

Effect of Tai Chi on depressive symptoms amongst Chinese older patients with major depression: the role of social support.

The objective of this study was to determine whether the effects of Tai Chi training on depressive symptoms in Chinese older patients with depression remained statistically significant after social support was controlled. Fourteen community-dwelling older patients from a psychogeriatric outpatient clinic were randomly assigned to either a 3-month Tai Chi intervention with 36 sessions or a wait-list control. Depression was assessed by the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), whereas social support was measured by the Lubben Social Network Scale (LSNS). By performing mult

Correlations of quality of life with adverse effects of medication, social support, course of illness, psychopathology, and demographic characteristics in patients with panic disorder.

Care of patients with panic disorder has raised quality-of-life (QOL) issues. The purpose of this study was to identify the level of QOL in patients with panic disorder and to examine the relationships between QOL and adverse effects of medication, social support, course of illness, psychopathology, and demographic characteristics. We recruited 57 patients with panic disorder from outpatient psychiatric clinics. We measured their QOL levels with the Short Form of the World Health Organization Questionnaire on Quality of Life-Taiwan Version (the WHOQOL-BREF Taiwan version) and examined the corr

Sharing life with a gluten-intolerant person--the perspective of close relatives.

BACKGROUND: Several studies indicate the importance of social support in the case of chronic disease. AIM: The aim was to explore dilemmas experienced by close relatives living with a person suffering from coeliac disease, and to describe the strategies they used to deal with these dilemmas. METHODS: Twenty-three informants were interviewed. A systematic inductive qualitative method, the critical incident technique was used. RESULTS: Disease-related worries included having bad conscience about not being affected by the disease, experiencing anxiety and witnessing the vulnerability of the af

[Effectiveness of dialectical behavior therapy for patients with borderline personality disorder in the long-term course--a 30-month-follow-up after inpatient treatment].

BACKGROUND: The beneficial effects of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) are well established. However, it is not well known whether this type of treatment relieves symptoms and signs of BPD in the long-term course thereafter and whether the results of DBT are transferable for patients with high comorbidity. METHODS: We conducted a follow-up examination of 50 consecutive inpatients with BPD as defined by DSM-IV. The patients were examined at admission, at discharge and 15 and 30 months after discharge. For the clinical diagnosis and to s

Sickness absence poses a threat to the Swedish Welfare State: a cross-sectional study of sickness absence and self-reported illness.

BACKGROUND: The increasing cost of public social sickness insurance poses a serious economic threat to the Swedish welfare state. In recent years, expenditures for social insurance in general, as well as social sickness insurance in particular, have risen steeply in Sweden. This cross-sectional study analyzed the association between sickness absence (SA) and self-reported reduced working capacity due to a longstanding illness (>3 months), as well between SA and a number of other health problems. METHODS: Self-reported data on longstanding illness and resultant reduced working capacity, socioe

Acculturation and driving under the influence: a study of repeat offenders.

OBJECTIVE: In California, driving under the influence (DUI) arrest and conviction rates are disproportionately higher among the Hispanic population. Acculturation and other factors associated with drinking and driving may help explain this disparity. METHOD: Interviews with Hispanic repeat DUI offenders were conducted immediately prior to sentencing and 2 years later. Arrest records from these offenders were also examined. Analyses were performed to examine the association between acculturation and other sociodemographic characteristics at baseline with DUI arrests and convictions at a 2-year
