Social skills training with hospitalized adolescents: an evaluative experiment.

The effectiveness of social skills training on adolescent males admitted to a psychiatric hospital was evaluated through the use of empirically derived anger scenarios, blind raters, matched experimental and control treatment groups, and a repeated measures analysis. Results indicated that the social skills training effectively improved the dimension of verbal response and eye contact. Facial expression did not show measurable improvement. The use of specific skills components and scoring criteria in the social skills training was emphasized. Overall, support was found for the efficacy of soci

Leadership in Times of Crisis: The Potential for Increasing Social Capital in Displaced and Fragmented Communities.

Emergency displacement bears ecological, social, and psychological implications. This article examines the role of local leaders in increasing social capital in temporary housing shelters inhabited by displaced and fragmented communities, focusing on the conditions that undermined social capital and the challenges of sustaining it over time. A qualitative study was conducted in Israeli temporary housing shelters during wartime. The study included 21 individual interviews with local leaders across seven of these sites, as well as three focus groups with 25 professional community social workers.

Subjective versus objective behavioral ratings following two analogue tasks: a comparison of socially phobic and non-anxious adolescents.

Although results regarding objective social skills deficits in adults are inconsistent, research with youth have consistently demonstrated such deficits. Furthermore, research has consistently demonstrated subjective appraisal of social skill deficit in both youth and adults with social phobia or social anxiety. As a result, research has begun to examine the presence of a negative perceptual bias in individuals with social phobia and social anxiety. The purpose of the present study was to extend the findings of social skill deficits to an adolescent sample by investigating differences between

Probability and cost estimates for social and physical outcomes in social phobia and panic disorder.

Individuals with Social Phobia (SP) (n = 23) and Panic Disorder (n = 22), and a non-anxious comparison (NAC) group (n = 62) rated the probability and cost of negative outcomes in the physical and the social domains. Overall, participants rated physical events as less probable but more costly than social events. Compared to the non-anxious group, participants with Social Phobia made significantly higher probability and cost estimates for social events, but not for physical events. Multiple regression analyses demonstrated that perceived cost of negative social events was the strongest unique pr

Breastfeeding self-efficacy, milk output, and influencing factors in mothers of preterm infants: a prospective cohort study in the NICU.

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding self-efficacy (BSE) is a critical predictor of lactation success, yet its role among mothers of preterm infants remains understudied, especially during the early postpartum period. This study aimed to (1) examine the association between BSE, feeding choices, and milk output in preterm mothers within 3–14 days postpartum, and (2) identify factors influencing BSE. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted with 200 mothers of preterm infants in a Chinese NICU. Data on demographics, social support, breastfeeding behaviors, and BSE (measured via the BSES-SF scale) …

Effectiveness of occupation-based interventions to improve areas of occupation and social participation after stroke: an evidence-based review.

This evidence-based review examined the evidence supporting the use of occupation-based interventions to improve areas of occupation and social participation poststroke. A total of 39 studies met the inclusion criteria and were critically evaluated. Most of the literature targeted activity of daily living (ADL)-based interventions and collectively provided strong evidence for the use of occupation-based interventions to improve ADL performance. The evidence related to instrumental ADLs was much more disparate, with limited evidence to support the use of virtual reality interventions and emergi

Cardiac Patients' Experiences and Perceptions of Social Media: Mixed-Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Traditional in-person cardiac rehabilitation has substantial benefits for cardiac patients, which are offset by poor attendance. The rapid increase in social media use in older adults provides an opportunity to reach patients who are eligible for cardiac rehabilitation but unable to attend traditional face-to-face groups. However, there is a paucity of research on cardiac patients' experiences and perspectives on using social media to support their health. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe cardiac rehabilitation patients' experiences in using social media in general

Cyber-ostracism and academic engagement among Chinese university students: a three-wave longitudinal study of mediating and moderating mechanisms.

Cyber-ostracism has become an important challenge in digitally mediated university life, yet its influence on academic engagement remains insufficiently understood. This study examined the longitudinal relationship between cyber-ostracism and academic engagement among Chinese university students, as well as the mediating roles of self-esteem and social avoidance and the moderating roles of social support and psychological resilience. A three-wave survey was conducted with 450 undergraduates from a provincial public university in China. Structural equation modeling showed that cyber-ostracism a…

Qualitative patient experiences from the Self-Blame and Perspective-Taking Intervention for eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: Problems in social cognition and social support contribute to eating disorders (ED).
