BACKGROUND: Hydatid cyst disease, caused by Echinococcus granulosus, primarily affects the liver and lungs, but it can also develop in rare locations such as the kidneys, thyroid, subcutaneous tissues, bones, and the mediastinum. These atypical presentations often pose diagnostic challenges, as they can mimic benign and malignant pathologies, leading to potential misdiagnoses and inappropriate treatments. Early and accurate detection of hydatid cysts in uncommon sites is crucial for optimal patient management.
CASE SUMMARY: This case report series presents five patients with hydatid cysts loc

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome (KTS) is a rare congenital disorder with an incidence of about 2-5:100 000. It is characterized by the triad of cutaneous hemangiomas, soft tissue or bone hypertrophy, and venous malformations. Gastrointestinal (GI) involvement in KTS, although uncommon, can lead to severe complications such as profuse GI bleeding. Our case highlights the challenges and management strategies of a patient with KTS.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 5-year-old child presented with rectal bleeding since birth, accompanied by swelling and bluish discoloration on left fla

BACKGROUND: Facial feminization surgery (FFS) is a key component of gender-affirming care for transfeminine individuals, with the upper third of the face-particularly the forehead, brow complex, and hairline-serving as critical anatomic targets for achieving gender congruence. Subtle alterations to these regions significantly influence gender perception and social integration.
METHODS: This manuscript reviews contemporary surgical strategies for feminizing the upper third of the face, including both osseous and soft tissue approaches. Procedures covered include supraorbital bossing reduction,

Sialectasis, defined as a dilated salivary duct, is an uncommon salivary disease. There are limited published data regarding salivary gland disease or anatomy of the salivary system in rabbits. In dogs, computed tomography (CT) is described as the imaging modality of choice for salivary gland disease. Identification of the correct diseased gland and respective duct is required for surgical planning. There are currently no studies describing CT features of parotid sialectasis in rabbits. The aim of this single-center, retrospective, and descriptive study was to determine CT features of confirme

Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) of the gingiva is an exceptionally rare plasma cell neoplasm, posing significant diagnostic challenges due to its nonspecific clinical presentation and low incidence. This case report details a 67-year-old male presenting with a painless right maxillary gingival mass, initially mimicking benign hyperplasia. Diagnostic workup, including cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), revealed osteolytic bone destruction and soft tissue expansion. Histopathological and immunohistochemical (IHC) analyses confirmed monoclonal plasma cell proliferation (CD38+, CD79a+, MUM-1+

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a rare malignant tumor, affecting 4.58 per 1 million children, with approximately 35% occurring in the head and neck. Skull base RMS commonly presents at advanced stages and delays diagnosis due to its overlapping features with other skull base pathology, and difficulty accessing the lesion for biopsy. This case illustrates these challenges in skull base RMS mimicking osteomyelitis of the petrous apex. Case: A 6-year-old immunocompetent female, with a history of two acute otitis media episodes, presented with a 3-week history of sixth cranial nerve palsy and sudden-on

Historically, musculoskeletal (MSK) tumors, which include both bone and soft tissue tumors, have been managed as distinct entities. The incidence of metastases, particularly bone metastasis, in patients with MSK tumors can result in the emergence of significant complications such as pain, impairment of vital anatomical structures, or pathological fractures. Given these issues, a diverse team of experts is typically engaged in intricate treatment decision-making concerning the necessity of surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or a mix of these methodologies. Nevertheless, percutaneous image-guided

CLINICAL/METHODICAL ISSUE: Neuroendocrine tumors (NET) represent a heterogeneous group of rare tumors that predominantly arise in the gastrointestinal tract. At the time of initial diagnosis, the NET has already spread locoregionally in about half of the patients, and 27% of patients have already developed distant metastases. Since this plays a crucial role in therapy planning, accurate diagnostic imaging is important.
STANDARD RADIOLOGICAL METHODS: Due to its high temporal and spatial resolution (multiphasic including arterial phase), computed tomography (CT) plays a decisive role in primary

Delivery of drugs to the lungs is commonly achieved using nasal and/or oral breathing-assisted techniques. The route of inhalation can substantially change the fate of inhaled droplets. The Respimat® Soft Mist™ Inhaler (SMI) is a commercially available efficient inhaler with 40-60% effectiveness. In the present study, we used computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with a custom setup to investigate the effect of a combined oral/nasal inhalation route on the SMI's regional droplet deposition, size distribution, and flow field. Our setup used a modified induction port (MIP) to mimic nasal inhalation

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In radiotherapy, the image quality of four-dimensional computed tomography (4DCT) is often degraded by artifacts resulting from breathing irregularities. Quality assurance mostly employ simplistic phantoms, not fully representing complexities and dynamics in patients. 3D-printing allows for design of highly customized phantoms. This study aims to validate the proof-of-concept of a realistic dynamic thorax phantom and its 4DCT application.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using 3D-printing, a realistic thorax phantom was produced with tissue-equivalent materials for soft tissue,

OBJECTIVES: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are the most common nonodontogenic cause of orofacial pain, leading to morbidity and impairment. TMD presents a diagnostic challenge due to many aetiologies that exhibit comparable symptoms and refer pain to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) region. Patients may be referred to dental specialists without accounting for all pain sources. This study aims to identify radiographic confounders (RCs) that can be mistaken for TMD in patients undergoing TMJ assessment using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A review of 369 CBCT o

BACKGROUND: Internal bleeding is a common and serious complication in trauma patients. The American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST) and the World Society of Emergency Surgery (WSES) have developed comprehensive guidelines to standardize and optimize the care of these patients. In Germany, abdominal injuries are involved in around 20% of all polytraumas, often caused by falls or road traffic accidents. The liver and spleen are most frequently affected. Correct diagnosis and timely management are crucial for patient survival.

BACKGROUND: Oroantral fistula (OAF) involves pathological, epithelialized, and unnatural communication between the maxillary sinus and oral cavity. Recently, functional endoscopic sinus surgery has provided minimally invasive treatment options with fewer postoperative complications. The aim of the study was to evaluate the one-stage endoscopic middle meatal antrostomy (EMMA) technique with the application of a platelet-rich fibrin membrane (PRF) for OAF closure and maxillary sinusitis relief.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients who suffered from OAF with odontogenic sinusitis were included in this

A smoothbore musket firing a round ball was the primary weapon of the infantry from the 16th to mid 19th century. Musket ball injuries are thus relatively common when archaeological remains of battlefield victims from that period are studied. Several experimental studies have focused on terminal ballistics of a musket ball. In addition, there is a good supply of historical records directly from the battlefield and military hospitals. Studies and historical records have both concluded that head injuries are among the most lethal types of musket ball damage. In this study we utilized modern day

Laryngocele, an abnormal dilation of the appendix of the laryngeal ventricle filled with air, is a rare condition predominantly presenting unilaterally. However, bilateral occurrences are exceedingly rare. In this article, we present a case of bilateral laryngocele along with a comprehensive literature review. A 57-year-old male presented with dyspnea, stridor, and bilateral neck masses. His medical history included chronic cough and intermittent hoarseness. Over a 3 month period, the neck masses progressively enlarged, resulting in respiratory distress. Interestingly, he denied experiencing w

INTRODUCTION: Extensive comminuted fractures are associated with tooth loss that ultimately leads to dimensional changes in the hard and soft tissues of the alveolar ridge. Reconstruction of the lost mandibular anterior ridge is very complex due to the natural curvature of the region. Case Presentation. In this case report, the combination of the modified shell technique with autologous bone plates and the guided bone regeneration (GBR) technique was performed on an 18-year-old patient after a comminuted fracture, to ensure new bone formation in the anterior ridge with a natural curvature. BACKGROUND: Distinguishing between Charcot Neuroarthropathy (CN), osteomyelitis (OM), and CN complicated with superimposed OM in diabetic patients is crucial for the treatment choice. Given that current diagnostic methods lack specificity, advanced techniques, e.g., magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and 99mTc-HMPAO-WBC Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT/CT), are needed. This study addresses the challenges in distinguishing OM and CN.
METHODS: We included diabetic patients with CN and soft tissue ulceration. MRI and 99mTc-HMPAO-WBC SPECT/CT were used for the diagnosis. The patien
