Maldevelopment of convergence eye movements in macaque monkeys with small- and large-angle infantile esotropia.

PURPOSE: To describe symmetric convergence eye movements evoked by disparity and/or accommodative cues in esotropic macaque monkeys, with the goal of determining whether these animals have the vergence deficits found in humans with esotropia. METHODS: Physical far and near targets were used to evoke large (approximately 8 degrees) symmetric convergence eye movements in four adult macaque monkeys (two with strabismus, two normal), using positive-feedback rewards. One strabismic monkey had infantile-onset, small-angle esotropia (small-eso approximately 2 degrees) induced by alternating occlusio…

Vision screening with the RDE stereotest in pediatric populations.

The usefulness of the Random Dot E (RDE) stereotest in screening the vision of school-aged children for vision problems has been established. As a single screening procedure, the effectivity (phi) of the RDE (phi = +0.52) is greater than the widely used Snellen acuity technique (phi = +0.36) and faster to complete. Very-low-birthweight (VLBW) children have a higher incidence of vision problems including strabismus, amblyopia, and refractive error than children born with normal-birthweights (NBW's). My purpose was to determine: (1) whether a group of young children at high risk for vision probl…

Inferior oblique muscle myectomy versus anterior transposition in the management of unilateral superior oblique muscle palsy, a comparative study.

Purpose: To evaluate the surgical outcomes of two inferior oblique muscle weakening procedures in the management of unilateral superior oblique muscle palsy (SOP). Methods: Files of all SO palsy patients with 11-20 PD hypertropia (HT) who were treated either by inferior oblique myectomy (IOM) or inferior oblique anterior transposition (IOAT) were retrospectively reviewed. Demographic characteristics such as sex, age, etiology, simultaneous horizontal deviation, and diplopia were noted. The two techniques were compared through HT correction (in the primary position, contralateral gaze, and ipsi

The influence of age on adaptation of disparity vergence and phoria.

A paucity of research exists to investigate whether the normal aging process influences the ability to adapt disparity vergence and phoria. Vergence eye movements and dissociated phoria were recorded from 49 healthy subjects (ages 20-70years) using an objective eye movement tracking system. Four-degree vergence responses were modified using a double-step protocol. Dynamics of vergence were quantified via peak velocity. The phoria adaptation experiment measured the magnitude (net change in phoria level) and rate (magnitude divided by the time constant) of phoria adaption during 5min of sustaine

Convergence insufficiency and failure of accommodation following midfacial trauma.

A prospective evaluation of patients who had sustained midfacial trauma was carried out in order to determine the prevalence of impaired convergence and accommodation and to establish the risk factors for such defects. Of 52 patients in this study, 11 suffered accommodation and/or convergence disturbances. They included 6 males (17% of the male population) and 5 females (29% of the female population). Nine of these 11 patients sustained their injuries due to alleged assaults (24.3% of all assaulted patients) and 2 following simple falls (25% of all fall victims). Five patients complained of do

Extraocular muscle surgery in the presence of complete paralysis of the fifth, sixth and seventh cranial nerves.

A nine-year-old boy developed paralytic left esotropia secondary to an intracranial lesion. He also exhibited total loss of function of the left fifth and seventh cranial nerves. Extraocular muscle surgery in this situation was felt to be dangerous to the operated eye. The degree of risk however could not be determined from published reports. Surgery was performed and was complicated by severe corneal ulceration. Use of a therapeutic contact lens presumedly helped in finally achieving a satisfactory result.

Optic nerve hypoplasia with good visual acuity and visual field defects: a study of children of diabetic mothers.

Seventeen children, born of severely diabetic mothers, exhibited segmental optic nerve hypoplasia with normal visual acuity and altitudinal or sector field defects corresponding to the hypoplastic areas of the disc. This is the first group of patients with optic nerve hypoplasia in which a possible cause has been identified. Optic nerve hypoplasia is neither a rare abnormality usually associated with serious central nervous system defects, nor is it always accompanied by decreased visual acuity.
