Anxiety symptoms and functional impairment: A systematic review of the correlation between the two measures.

Researchers and clinicians assume a strong, positive correlation between anxiety symptoms and functional impairment. That assumption may be well-justified since diagnostic criteria typically include functional impairment. Still, the relationship remains largely unavailable in any systematic review. Our aim with this paper was to provide empirical evidence for this assumed relationship and to document the observed correlations between anxiety symptom measures and functional impairment measures. Correlations existed for symptoms of six anxiety disorders (Panic Disorder, Agoraphobia, Social Anxie

Postpartum psychiatric disorders.

This review summarises the psychiatry of the puerperium, in the light of publications during the past 5 years. A wide variety of disorders are seen. Recognition of disorders of the mother-infant relationship is important, because these have pernicious long-term effects but generally respond to treatment. Psychoses complicate about one in 1000 deliveries. The most common is related to manic depression, in which neuroleptic drugs should be used with caution. Post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessions of child harm, and a range of anxiety disorders all require specific psychological treatments. P

Health problems among UN refugees at a family medical centre in Ankara, Turkey.

OBJECTIVES: Political lability in the Near East has brought about the migration of refugees from adjacent countries to Turkey in recent years. To provide an effective health service for refugees, a needs assessment has to be done. UN refugees referring to a family medical centre located in Ankara, Turkey, were therefore investigated for health problems. DESIGN: Medical records were studied retrospectively for age distribution, gender, origin, diagnoses, type of treatment and referral to a secondary health care setting. SUBJECTS: 212 refugees of different countries (mostly from Iraq, Iran and

Exploring the differential effects of psychological resilience and social support in mitigating post-traumatic psychiatric symptoms: real-world network analysis of front-line rescuers.

BACKGROUND: Although both psychological resilience and social support are widely believed to be effective in alleviating post-traumatic psychiatric symptoms in individuals with traumatic events, there has been a lack of comparative analysis of their intervention effects on different post-traumatic psychiatric symptoms. Furthermore, previous studies have mostly failed to control for potential confounding effects caused by different traumatic events. AIMS: We used the novel network analysis approach to examine the differential moderating effects of psychological resilience and social support on

A comparison of the capacity of DSM-IV and DSM-5 acute stress disorder definitions to predict posttraumatic stress disorder and related disorders.

OBJECTIVE: This study addresses the extent to which DSM-IV and DSM-5 definitions of acute stress disorder (ASD) predict subsequent posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and related psychiatric disorders following trauma. METHOD: Patients with randomized admissions to 5 hospitals across Australia (N = 596) were assessed in hospital and reassessed for PTSD at 3 (n = 508), 12 (n = 426), 24 (n = 439), and 72 (n = 314) months using the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale; DSM-IV definition of PTSD was used at each assessment, and DSM-5 definition was used at 72 months. The importance of secondary trauma exposure for post-disaster mental disorder.

BACKGROUND: Interventions to treat mental disorders after natural disasters are important both for humanitarian reasons and also for successful post-disaster physical reconstruction that depends on the psychological functioning of the affected population. A major difficulty in developing such interventions, however, is that large between-disaster variation exists in the prevalence of post-disaster mental disorders, making it difficult to estimate need for services in designing interventions without carrying out a post-disaster mental health needs assessment survey. One of the daunting methodol

Standing strong: Effects of social dominance on neural activity and defeat-induced social avoidance in female Syrian hamsters.

Social dominance modulates stress vulnerability, yet the neural mechanisms by which dominance status alters responses to stress in females remain poorly understood. This study aimed to determine whether activation of neurons in the posterior medial amygdala (MeP) and ventral medial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) was associated with reduced stress vulnerability in dominant female Syrian hamsters. We created dominance relationships in hamsters, exposed animals to social defeat stress, tested animals for stress-induced social avoidant responses, and collected tissue for c-Fos immunohistochemistry. Introducing the Diathesis-Compassion Layered Care Model (DCLCM): an IPA study of dissociation and complex trauma in eating disorders in Iran.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (EDs) frequently co-occur with trauma-related symptomatology, including dissociative experiences. While international research has examined associations between EDs and trauma frameworks such as the dissociative subtype of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, little is known about how therapists in non-Western contexts conceptualize the trauma-dissociation-ED linkage or integrate trauma-informed and compassion-focused approaches in practice. METHOD: Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was applied to explore Iranian

Using genetic instruments to predict the causal relationship between air pollution and mental disorders: A multi-model Mendelian randomization analysis.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution has become a significant environmental health issue. Previous studies have shown that air pollution increases the risk of mental disorders through various pathways, such as inflammation, oxidative stress, and disruptions in neurotransmitter systems. However, the potential causal relationship between air pollution and mental disorders remains understudied. Understanding the causal relationship between gene prediction of air pollution and mental disorders can provide new insights for improving public health interventions and policies. METHODS: A Mendelian randomization

Quality of intrapartum midwifery care in Austria: Implications for birth satisfaction and maternal mental health.

PROBLEM: A substantial proportion of people who give birth experience childbirth as negative or traumatic, which may adversely affect postpartum mental health. BACKGROUND: Respectful, supportive and woman-centred intrapartum care is a recognised determinant of positive birth experiences, yet evidence linking perceived midwifery care quality with birth satisfaction and trauma-related outcomes in Austria remains limited. AIM: To examine the associations between perceived quality of intrapartum midwifery care, birth satisfaction and birth-related post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD). METHODS

Boosting trauma resilience: The power of electronic mental health support - a randomized trial.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric condition triggered by experiencing or witnessing traumatic events, such as death, serious injury, or threats to oneself or others. Affecting 5-10 % of the population, PTSD is often underreported due to the reluctance of individuals to disclose personal traumatic experiences. This study explore the effectiveness of a digital (electronic mental health and psychosocial support) and psychologist-led intervention in mitigating PTSD symptoms. A randomized control trial was conducted, comparing the effects of human and digital intervention (cond

Potentially perilous pedagogies: teaching trauma is not the same as trauma-informed teaching.

This article explores why and how trauma theory and research are currently used in higher education in nonclinical courses such as literature, women's studies, film, education, anthropology, cultural studies, composition, and creative writing. In these contexts, traumatic material is presented not only indirectly in the form of texts and films that depict traumatic events but also directly in the form of what is most commonly referred to in nonclinical disciplines as trauma studies, cultural trauma studies, and critical trauma studies. Within these areas of study, some instructors promote pote

Early life stress and morphometry of the adult anterior cingulate cortex and caudate nuclei.

BACKGROUND: Early life stress (ELS) is linked to adult psychopathology and may contribute to long-term brain alterations, as suggested by studies of women who suffered childhood sexual abuse. We examine whether reported adverse ELS defined as stressful and/or traumatic adverse childhood events (ACEs) is associated with smaller limbic and basal ganglia volumes. METHOD: 265 healthy Australian men and women without psychopathology or brain disorders were studied. ACEs were assessed by the ELSQ and current emotional state by the DASS. Lower levels of positive affect and insomnia are associated with elevated allostatic load among Ukrainian refugees.

To date, several biological alterations associated with the refugee status have been investigated. However, none of them has focused on the allostatic load (AL) index that is a collective measure of biological responses to stress. Therefore, the present study aimed to assess the AL index and its correlates in 60 Ukrainian refugees who migrated to Poland after the Russian invasion. The AL index was measured in 60 Ukrainian refugees and 50 controls matched for age and sex. It was based on sex-specific distributions of 15 biomarkers (cardiovascular markers, anthropometric measures, inflammatory m

Diet, Stress and Mental Health.

INTRODUCTION: There has long been an interest in the effects of diet on mental health, and the interaction of the two with stress; however, the nature of these relationships is not well understood. Although associations between diet, obesity and the related metabolic syndrome (MetS), stress, and mental disorders exist, causal pathways have not been established. METHODS: We reviewed the literature on the relationship between diet, stress, obesity and psychiatric disorders related to stress. RESULTS: Diet and obesity can affect mood through direct effects, or stress-related mental disorders co

Symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children are associated with cortisol responses to psychosocial stress but not with daily cortisol levels.

We tested associations of diurnal hypothalamic-pituitary adrenal axis (HPAA) activity and its response to stress with behavioral symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) among 272 eight-year-old children. We measured their diurnal salivary cortisol and salivary cortisol responses to the Trier Social Stress Test for Children (TSST-C). Mothers rated their child's behavior with the ADHD-IV Rating Scale and the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). There were no significant associations between ADHD symptoms and diurnal cortisol concentrations. The boys with predominantly inattentive

Comparing Trauma Treatment Outcomes Between Homeless and Housed Veterans in a VA PTSD Clinical Program.

Homeless veterans are likely to experience Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Homelessness itself is traumatic, and PTSD may exacerbate homelessness risk for veterans. Often, PTSD goes untreated in this subpopulation of veterans. Our study examined trauma-focused treatment (TFT) and non-TFT initiation and completion in a sample of housed and homeless veterans being served by a PTSD clinical team in Washington, DC. Findings included a high percentage of veterans who experienced homelessness in the sample and lower treatment completion rates among homeless veterans compared to housed veteran
