Reconstruction of large lower lip defects is challenging, especially when repairing the vermilion at the same time. The authors describe a novel method for reconstruction of a large lower-lip defect including the vermilion. The reconstruction includes two layers: the anterior layer, reconstructed from V-Y advanced musculocutaneous flap of the cheek; and the posterior layer, reconstructed from the musculomucosal flap from the remnant lower lip. Stacking of the bilateral musculomucosal flaps raises the height of the posterior layer and covers the top of the lower lip to form the new vermilion. T

BACKGROUND: An objective assessment of the causes of age-related contour deformities of the soft tissues of the face and neck is very important in esthetic surgery, especially as minimally invasive techniques gain increasing popularity.
METHODS: To visualize the tissues that cause age-related soft tissue changes, we performed cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in 37 patients who underwent facial and neck rejuvenation procedures in 2021-2022.
RESULTS: Vertical CBCT enabled visualization of the causes and degree of tissue involvement in age-related changes in the lower third of the face and

Wide local excision remains the main treatment modality for primary lip cancer, which often results in considerable deficits of lip tissue and requires reconstruction using free tissue transfer. Although diverse free flaps, such as radial forearm flap or anterolateral thigh flap, have been used, their application is often limited by their inherent limitations, including donor-site morbidity and flap bulkiness. This report details the authors' experience of lower lip reconstruction using a superthin superficial circumflex iliac artery perforator (SCIP) free flap. Two patients with primary squam

Forequarter amputation is a rarely indicated operation that has the potential for delayed wound healing, chronic pain, and dysfunction. Reconstruction in cases of skin and soft tissue loss may be particularly challenging. Here we present a 79-year-old female with recurrent, previously radiated left shoulder chondrosarcoma who underwent forequarter amputation with a 'spare parts' filet of forearm flap and targeted muscle reinnervation to the flap. The patient healed without complication and achieved reinnervation with minimal pain.

INTRODUCTION: As the combat operational tempo of the military conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan has declined over the last decade, there has been a decrease in the number of patients requiring acute limb salvage. In their place, a growing population of patients with persistent functional deficits, pain, and inadequate soft tissue coverage stemming from prior limb salvage strategies have returned to our institution seeking revision surgery. Herein, we examine our institution's evolving surgical approach to extremity reconstruction from 2011 through 2019, culminating in the development of our li

Burn injuries, as a major public health problem, can lead to high morbidity and mortality. Burns is considered as one of the most devastating injuries globally and the fourth most common injury after traffic accidents, falls and interpersonal violence. Burn injuries can affect human life, such as physical and mental health, functional skills, and performance. Changes in appearance, social isolation, stress, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, unemployment, financial burden and family problems can occur in these patients. These burn complications can be exacerbated without adequate social sup

OBJECTIVE: Native-tissue techniques for Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) repairs, such as the Manchester Procedure (MP), have recently been revitalized. However, there are conflicting opinions regarding correcting cervical elongation support by the MP, and the risk of possible poor outcomes and postoperative complications. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate anatomical and patient-reported outcomes during one year after MP.
DESIGN: Prospective cohort study.
SETTING: This study was conducted on women who underwent the MP for cervical elongation between 2010 and 2020.
PATIENTS: Women with a

BACKGROUND: Several methods for cleft lip repair have been developed over time, with no clear method considered the standard. In the authors' department, the use of a modified rotation-advancement technique rather than the traditional rotation-advancement technique in unilateral complete cleft lip repair has increased over the past decade. This study aimed to determine which technique provides better outcomes.
METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted by analyzing the preoperative and postoperative aesthetic nasal and labial anthropometric measurements of the frontal and basal views of

Scaphocephaly is the commonest form of craniosynostosis with a varied presentation consisting of many morphological components and a range of possible surgical interventions. However, with regard to esthetic assessment, there is no universally applied assessment system. The aim was to develop a simple assessment tool encompassing multiple phenotypic components of scaphocephaly. This was done by piloting a red/amber/green (RAG) scoring system to judge esthetic outcomes following scaphocephaly surgery using photographs and experienced observers. Standard photographic views of 20 patients who had

SUMMARY: Understanding how to remove and retain the relatively large residual auricle is important in concha-type microtia reconstruction. The authors present a method for concha-type microtia reconstruction using a delayed postauricular skin flap. A total of 40 patients with concha-type microtia who underwent ear reconstruction using a delayed postauricular skin flap were retrospectively examined. Reconstruction was performed in three stages. The first stage consisted of preparing a delayed postauricular skin flap and dealing with the residual auricle including removal of the upper residual a

Microtia is a congenital disorder that manifests as a malformation of the external ear leading to psychosocial problems in affected children. Here, we present a tissue-engineered treatment approach based on a bioprinted autologous auricular cartilage construct (EarCartilage) combined with a bioengineered human pigmented and prevascularized dermo-epidermal skin substitute (EarSkin) tested in immunocompromised rats. We confirmed that human-engineered blood capillaries of EarSkin connected to the recipient's vasculature within 1 week, enabling rapid blood perfusion and epidermal maturation. Bioen

BACKGROUND: Follow-up studies on auricular reconstruction procedures have reported postoperative complications; some of which can only be reversed with revision surgery. This study aims to provide a feasible surgical strategy based on the Nagata method for patients requiring secondary revision and verify mid-term aesthetic outcomes.
METHODS: Secondary auricular reconstructions based on the Nagata method were performed on seven patients seeking secondary revision between 2017 and 2021. Scores of a five-point Likert scale and artificial intelligence ratings based on convolutional nerve networks

In the past decade, vascularized composite allotransplantation (VCA) has become clinical reality for reconstruction after face and hand trauma. It offers patients the unique opportunity to regain form and function in a way that had only been achieved with traditional reconstruction or with the use of prostheses. On the other hand, prostheses for facial and hand reconstruction have continued to evolve over the years and, in many cases, represent the primary option for patients after hand and face trauma. We compared the cost, associated complications, and long-term outcomes of VCA with prosthes
