A new type of nitric oxide (NO)-releasing material is described that utilizes S-nitrosothiols anchored to tiny fumed silica (FS) particles as the NO donor system. The synthetic procedures suitable for tethering three different thiol species (cysteine, N-acetylcysteine, and N-acetylpenicillamine) to the surface of FS polymer filler particles are detailed. The thiol-derivatized particles are converted to their corresponding S-nitrosothiols by reaction with t-butylnitrite. OBJECTIVES: We studied the experimental use of Seprafilm, a sheet-like film form of hyaluronic acid, in the repair of subtotal perforations of the tympanic membrane (TM), and the durability of such repairs.
METHOD: The research was conducted on 42 Sprague-Dawley rats. Right TMs of all rats were subtotally and thermally perforated in the same fashion. Seprafilm was applied to the perforated TMs of the 21 rats comprising the experiment group. The perforated TMs of the remaining 21 rats, the control group, were left to heal spontaneously.

PURPOSE: This analysis reports on risk factors for corneal infiltrative events from a 1-year, randomized clinical trial of lotrafilcon A lenses.
METHODS: Six hundred fifty-eight subjects randomized to lotrafilcon A lenses were observed in a 1-year clinical trial in the United States. Risk factors gathered at baseline were analyzed to determine their association with corneal infiltrative events.

Durasphere is a urethral bulking agent used to treat stress urinary incontinence secondary to intrinsic sphincter deficiency. Although rare, chronic outlet obstruction and urinary retention are possible complications of this "permanent" bulking agent.
