PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The purpose of the current report was to present our initial experience with an arthroscopic technique for anterior stabilization of the shoulder with an anchor in 64 patients who had recurrent anterior glenohumeral instability.
MATERIAL: The application of arthroscopic techniques for the operative treatment of recurrent anterior instability of the glenohumeral joint has generated widespread interest. The goal of all arthroscopic techniques for stabilization of the shoulder is the re-establishment of a functioning inferior glenohumeral ligament. This is achieved by reatt

An avulsion fracture of tibial tuberosity with an unusual articular involvement was treated with open reduction and internal fixation. Although the mechanism of tibial tuberosity fracture is described as passively flexing the knee while active quadriceps femoris contraction, the weight transmitted from the menisci on the lateral side of the knee joint may cause an epiphyseal disruption. We report a case of tibial tuberosity fracture with lateral plateau rim fracture in a young male adolescent, which has not been published previously in the literature.

A cadaveric study using the "funnel technique" to probe thoracic pedicles was conducted. The results (location, level, and perforation rate) of three spine surgeons of varying experience were compared. The objectives were to evaluate the reliability and accuracy of the funnel technique for the placement of thoracic pedicle screws and to describe the technique. Nine fresh cadavers (216 thoracic pedicles) were used for pedicle screw placement using the funnel technique. The study was conducted by three spine surgeons with a significantly different level of experience in thoracic pedicle screw pl

Pedicle screws have dramatically improved the outcomes of spinal reconstruction requiring spinal fusion. Short-segment surgical treatments based on the use of pedicle screws for the treatment of neoplastic, developmental, congenital, traumatic, and degenerative conditions have been proved to be practical, safe, and effective. The Funnel Technique provides a straightforward, direct, and inexpensive way to very safely apply pedicle screws in the cervical, thoracic, or lumbar spine. Carefully applied pedicle-screw fixation does not produce severe or frequent complications. Pedicle-screw fixation

This is a case report describing the injury sustained by a 36-year-old man injured in a motorcycle crash who sustained a fracture dislocation of L2 upon L3, associated with a split in the lamina of L3. His neurologic lesion was T12 ASIA B: with a motor score of 52 but with preservation of sensory function (sensory score 96) in most parts of his lower extremities. He also suffered a lower extremity fracture. Imaging of the spine is presented showing a multiplanar fracture associated with translation and with a defect in the lamina that may be seen in certain AO type B or type C fractures, that

A case of an unusual lumbosacral fracture-subluxation associated with bilateral fractures of the first sacral pedicles is described. The authors are aware of only one reported case in the literature. A 58-year-old man was involved in an accident during which his trunk was severely twisted toward the left and flexed. He also demonstrated L5 and S1 radiculopathies. He was successfully treated with surgical decompression of the L5 and S1 nerve roots with bilateral foraminotomies, followed by posterolateral arthrodesis at the lumbosacral junction using a transpedicular screw system that extended f

Eighty-two patients with idiopathic scoliosis were treated by Cotrel-Dubousset instrumentation between 1987 and 1991. Twenty were treated with hooks only, 47 with screws and hooks, and 15 with screws only. The methods were compared and the findings showed that screw fixation can be used in the thoracic spine without neurological complications. The screws provided immediate stability with rigid fixation, together with better correction of frontal, sagittal and rotational deformity. There is less loss of correction, a shorter fusion and less risk of neurological complications because of the plac

We report an unusual case of spinal fracture in ankylosing spondylitis. The fracture occurred through the S1 vertebral body and resembled a traumatic spondylolisthesis. Treatment consisted of prompt operative intervention after extensive diagnostic evaluation. The case emphasizes the difficulty of diagnosing spinal fractures in those with ankylosing spondylitis, the necessity for being alert to the possibility of fracture in this group, and the value of early surgical intervention for sacral fractures with neural deficit.

Since 1981 we have been using the dynamic hip screw (DHS) for surgical treatment of pertrochanteric fractures. After presentation of the implant and the operative technique the postoperative treatment is discussed. Immediate mobilization of the injured leg with weight-bearing is extremely important. Up to the end of 1986 we had used the DHS in 509 patients, whose average age was 75 years. During the hospital stay 31 patients died. Complications in the form of an infection occurred in 11 cases. Technical mistakes during surgery and breakage of the implant were each observed in two cases. After

A 14-month retrospective study was performed on 11 patients (15 feet) who had corrective bunion surgery utilizing a modified A-O Hohmann bunionectomy. The study involved radiographic evaluation, range of motion measurements, and a subjective questionnaire. The results of the study suggest that the procedure is very effective in correcting mild to moderate bunion deformities.

PURPOSE: We hypothesised that traditional iliac tricortical bone grafts (no vascularised) still have a reasonable role in promoting satisfactory bony healing in non-union defects of certain sizes. Here, we report the clinical/radiological outcomes through a retrospective case series.
METHODS: We screened 74 patients with definitive non-union in the long bones of the upper extremities who visited the outpatient department from 2008 to 2018. Among these patients, 25 who met our inclusion/exclusion criteria were investigated.
RESULTS: The mean age was 51.92 years, and there were 12, 9, 1, and 3

Medial opening wedge high tibial osteotomy (HTO) makes the proximal tibia a highly unstable structure and causes plates and screws to be the potential sources for mechanical failure. However, asymmetrical callus and incomplete bone formations underneath the plates (TomoFix) have been recent concerns in clinical and experimental studies related to HTO due to the high stiffness. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the biomechanical effect of the TomoFix plate system with respect to changes in design using a computational simulation. A parametric three-dimensional model of HTO was construct

BACKGROUND: Children with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) can suffer from frequent fractures and limb deformities, resulting in impaired ambulation. Osteopenia and thin cortices complicate orthopedic treatment in this group. This study evaluates the clinical results of a bone splint technique for the treatment of lower limb deformities in children with type I OI. The technique consists of internal plating combined with cortical strut allograft fixation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We prospectively followed nine children (five boys, four girls) with lower limb deformities due to type I OI, who had bee

OBJECTIVE: To introduce the method and experience of treating critical-sized tibial bone defect by taking large iliac crest bone graft.
METHODS: From January 2020 to January 2022, iliac crest bone grafting was performed in 20 patients (10 men and 10 women) with critical-sized tibial bone defect. The mean length of bone defect was 13.59 ± 3.41. Bilateral iliac crest grafts were harvested, including the inner and outer plates of the iliac crest and iliac spine. The cortical bone screw was used to integrate two iliac bone blocks into one complex. Locking plate was used to fix the graft-host comp

BACKGROUND: The standard approach for addressing intra-articular calcaneal fractures involves open reduction with plate and screw fixation, with ongoing discourse regarding the application of grafts to address bone gaps. The aim of this study is the temporal comparison of the radiological and functional outcomes in patients undergoing surgery for intra-articular calcaneal fractures, with a specific focus on the use of bone grafts.
METHODS: Thirty patients, comprising 13 with iliac grafts and 17 without, were enrolled in the study. Preoperative and postoperative assessments included Gissane an

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of osteoporotic pelvic fractures is increasing. The broken anterior pelvic ring is preferentially fixed with long intramedullary screws, which require a good understanding of the patient-specific anatomy to prevent joint perforation. The aim of this study was to assess the variability of the superior pubic ramus and the supra acetabular corridors' length and width using statistical shape modelling.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A male and female statistical shape model was made based on 59 forensic CT scans. For the superior pubic ramus and the supra acetabular corridor t

PURPOSE: The purpose of our study was to evaluate the ultimate load to failure for 2 metacarpal fracture fixation strategies, plating versus intramedullary nailing, and then compare them to the native metacarpal. Our hypothesis was that the intramedullary nail after fracture fixation would more closely restore the native strength of the metacarpal when compared to plate fixation.
METHODS: Matched pairs of cadaveric hands (age range, 19-49; 5 men and 6 women) were dissected to produce 88 intact and equally distributed metacarpals (little, ring, middle, and index fingers). The metacarpals were
