Two patients who developed what appeared to be a granulomatous reaction following muslin wrapping of unclipped aneurysms are reported. They presented with cranial nerve palsies and at operation were found to have an abscess around the wrapped aneurysms. In one of these two patients Staphylococcus epidemidis was isolated from the pus. This, together with further evidence from reported cases in the literature, would suggest that infection may play an additional role at least in some cases in the onset of a foreign-body granulomatous reaction seen following wrapping of aneurysms.

In the framework of an extensive health survey, 119 viscose rayon workers exposed to carbon disulfide (CS2) and 79 workers from other plants not exposed to any toxic agent in the working environment underwent a gastrointestinal examination including a self-administered questionnaire, abdominal palpation, percussion and a number of liver function tests. Phospholipase A2 was purified about 78 fold from the venom of scorpion Heterometrus fulvipes. The molecular weight of the enzyme was found to be 16,000 and it was optimally active at pH 7.4 and at 50 degrees C. The Km value of the enzyme was 1.8 x 10(-3) M. Calcium, Magnesium and Zinc ions stimulated whereas Mercury ion and EDTA inhibited the enzyme activity. This enzyme exhibited fluorescence emission maximum between 310-320 nm.

Amylase activity was measured in thyroid tissues of various thyroid diseases and was analysed electrophoretically. Normal thyroid tissues contained significant amounts of amylase (mean +/- SD; 2.71 +/- 1.15 IU/g of tissue), and their amylase isozyme was composed of a majority of salivary type isoamylase and other peculiar isoamylase. Immunization of rabbits with a soluble human liver fraction incorporated into Freund's adjuvants produced antibodies that reacted with human liver extracts as well as extracts of other human organs.
