A case of interhemispheric choroidal epithelial cyst is reported. The patient is a 9-month-old female who was transadmitted to our hospital for further examination because of the enlargement of her head. She had no neurological deficits nor symptoms of increased intracranial pressure. CT scanning performed on admission showed multiple cystic lesions in the right frontoparietal interhemispheric space, whose circumference was partially enhanced with contrast medium. Metrizamide CT cisternography demonstrated no communication between the lesions and the ventricular system. The signal intensity of…

This 42-year-old man experienced a sudden onset of occipital headache. Neurological examination revealed a moderately disturbed consciousness and a moderate left hemiparesis. CT scan disclosed a hugh hematoma in the right temporo parietal lobe without intraventricular hemorrhage. A cerebral angiography demonstrated typical findings of moyamoya disease and a small saccular aneurysm at the peripheral portion of the right anterior choroidal artery, which was dilated at the collateral circulation to the parietal lobe. The hematoma was removed at once by a craniotomy. He became alert but mild hemip…

One of the methods currently being used to treat choroidal melanoma employs an episcleral plaque containing I-125 radioactive seeds. However, comprehensive dosimetry studies on the plaque are scarce and controversial. For this work, we use film to study the dosimetry outside the lip of the gold shield of the eye plaque. This lip around the gold shield was made to protect the critical structures behind and adjacent to the lesion. Since the changes of energy spectrum of I-125 in tissue are negligible, film dosimetry seems to be a logical choice because of high spatial resolution required around …

Ultrastructural observations on the elastic lamina of Bruch's membrane of the rabbit and human eyes revealed connections to the ciliary epithelium and choroidal elastic tissue. The connections to the ciliary epithelium are in the form of bundles of microfibrils that peel off the anterior extension of Bruch's membrane beyond the ora serrata and insert into the basement membrane of the pigmented epithelium of the pars plana. The connections to the choroidal elastic tissue are in the form of bundles of microfibrils (in the rabbit) or elastin and microfibrils (in the human) that cross the tissue s…

INTRODUCTION: Choroid plexus cysts (CPCs) are rare, benign neuroepithelial cysts that can cause obstructive hydrocephalus, although most are asymptomatic. Symptomatic CPCs are uncommon, and hydrocephalus from these cysts, especially intermittent in nature, is rarely reported. Diagnosing CPC-induced intermittent hydrocephalus can be challenging due to the cysts' CSF-like content and thin walls, often requiring advanced MRI sequences for detection.
CASE REPORT: We present the case of a previously healthy 6-month-old male who developed intermittent triventricular hydrocephalus, presenting with p…

Deficit of human ornithine aminotransferase (hOAT), a mitochondrial tetrameric pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (PLP) enzyme, leads to gyrate atrophy of the choroid and retina (GA). Although 70 pathogenic mutations have been identified, only few enzymatic phenotypes are known. Here, we report biochemical and bioinformatic analyses of the G51D, G121D, R154L, Y158S, T181M, and P199Q pathogenic variants involving residues located at the monomer-monomer interface. All mutations cause a shift toward a dimeric structure, and changes in tertiary structure, thermal stability, and PLP microenvironment. The impac…

Given the prevalence of diabetes worldwide, diabetic retinopathy (DR) has become the most prominent cause of blindness. However, DR can be diagnosed only when it is severe enough to be clinically detectable. Several studies have evaluated the correlation between DR and diabetic nephropathy (DN) by utilizing optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Compared with other diagnostic techniques, such as fluorescein angiography and fundus photography, OCTA has the ability to directly reflect the condition of the retinal and choroidal microcirculation at an early stage. This review focuses on …

PURPOSE: Diffuse villous hyperplasia of the choroid plexus (DVHCP) and choroid plexus papilloma (CPP) are rare benign tumors usually diagnosed as a result of progressive hydrocephalus, especially in childhood. We present the case of a Japanese boy diagnosed with progressive hydrocephalus due to DVHCP.
METHODS: Case: A 2-year and 3-month-old Japanese boy was found to have delayed motor development (equivalent to 1 year and 2 months old), an enlarged head circumference of 51 cm within + 1.5 standard deviation (S.D.), and incomplete closure of the anterior fontanel. The magnetic resonance imagin…

Iron accumulation in the CNS is associated with many neurological diseases via amplification of inflammation and neurodegeneration. However, experimental studies on iron overload are challenging, since rodents hardly accumulate brain iron in contrast to humans. Here, we studied LEWzizi rats, which present with elevated CNS iron loads, aiming to characterise choroid plexus, ependymal, CSF and CNS parenchymal iron loads in conjunction with altered blood iron parameters and, thus, signifying non-classical entry sites for iron into the CNS. Non-haem iron in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue …

Streptococcus suis (S. suis) is an important opportunistic pathogen, which can cause septicemia and meningitis in pigs and humans. Previous in vivo observations in S. suis-infected pigs revealed lesions at the choroid plexus (CP). In vitro experiments with primary porcine CP epithelial cells (PCPEC) and human CP epithelial papilloma (HIBCPP) cells demonstrated that S. suis can invade and traverse the CP epithelium, and that the CP contributes to the inflammatory response via cytokine expression. Here, next generation sequencing (RNA-seq) was used to compare global transcriptome profiles of PCP…

The volume, composition, and movement of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are important for brain physiology, pathology, and diagnostics. Nevertheless, few studies have focused on the main structure that produces CSF, the choroid plexus (CP). Due to the presence of monocarboxylate transporters (MCTs) in the CP, changes in blood and brain lactate levels are reflected in the CSF. A lactate receptor, the hydroxycarboxylic acid receptor 1 (HCA1), is present in the brain, but whether it is located in the CP or in other periventricular structures has not been studied. Here, we investigated the distribu…

BACKGROUND: Thyroxine (T4) hormone is synthesized by the thyroid gland and then released into the systemic circulation where it binds to a number of proteins. Dysfunction in T4 transport mechanisms has been demonstrated in multiple central nervous system (CNS) diseases including Alzheimer's disease. In the presence of different compounds that inhibit potential T4 transport mechanisms, this study investigated the transfer of T4 from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) into Choroid Plexus (CP) and other brain tissues. The compounds used were brefeldin A, low sodium artificial CSF (aCSF), BCH, phloretin, a…
