Anemia is a common problem when patients present with cancer, and it can worsen during treatment. Anemia can directly impact the cognitive and physical quality of life and may impair fitness for oncological therapy. The most common cause of anemia is iron deficiency. Newer intravenous (IV) iron formulations offer a safe and rapidly effective treatment option. We performed a systematic mapping review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating intravenous iron therapy in patients with cancer and anemia and their outcomes. A total of 23 RCTs were identified. The median number of patients e

Non-islet cell tumor hypoglycemia (NICTH) is a very rare symptom of severe hypoglycemia associated with extrapancreatic tumors. It is considered to be caused by insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-II. There have been no autopsy cases of colorectal carcinoma with NICTH confirmed with both serum high molecular weight and tumoral IGF-II. We report the case of a 46-year-old woman with advanced sigmoid colon cancer and liver metastases. She underwent open sigmoidectomy, and histologically, the lesion was a differentiated-type tubular adenocarcinoma. Postoperative chemotherapy was initiated. However, s

Advances in surgical techniques and treatment concept have allowed more patients with low rectal cancer to preserve sphincter without sacrificing survival benefit. However, postoperative dysfunctions such as fecal incontinence, frequency, urgency, and clustering often occur in patients with low rectal cancer. The main surgical procedures for low rectal cancer include low anterior rectum resection (LAR), intersphincteric resection (ISR), coloanal anastomosis (Parks) and so on. The incidence of major LARS after LAR is up to 84.6%. The postoperative function of ISR is even worse than LAR. Moreove

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and the impact of intraoperative tumor manipulation on CTCs in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients.
METHODS: We performed a prospective study on 40 patients with CRC stages I to IV who received curative surgery using the no-touch technique. Flow cytometry was used to identify CTCs in peripheral blood samples (4 mL/sample) collected at two surgical moments: skin incision (T1) and after surgical resection (T2). A threshold of ≥4 CTCs/4 mL blood was established for considering patients CTC positive.
RESULTS: In

This scoping review examines the evidence for n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid [LCPUFA, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)] supplementation in clinical cancer therapy. A comprehensive literature search was performed to identify relevant clinical intervention studies conducted through August 2020. Fifty-seven unique cancer trials, assessing EPA and/or DHA supplementation pre- or post-treatment, concomitant with neoadjuvant chemotherapy, radiation or surgery, or in palliative therapy were included. Breast, head and neck, gastrointestinal, gastric, colorectal/rect

PURPOSE: This study aimed to analyze the effect of ascitic carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels on the long-term oncologic outcomes of colorectal cancer (CRC) following curative treatment.
METHODS: A total of 191 patients with stage II/III CRC were included. CEA was analyzed on the peritoneal fluid samples taken at the start of each surgery. Long-term oncologic outcomes were analyzed using known risk factors for recurrence in CRC.
RESULT: Multivariate analysis of recurrence showed that lymphatic invasion (hazards ratio (HR) 2.7, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.1-7, p = 0.038), vascular invas

BACKGROUND: No standard treatment for anorectal fistula cancer, such as multidisciplinary therapy, has been established due to the rarity of the disease. Herein, we investigated patients with cancer associated with anorectal fistula who underwent surgery to clarify the clinicopathological characteristics and to propose future perspectives for treatment strategies.
CASE PRESENTATION: Seven patients with cancer associated with anorectal fistula who underwent rectal amputation in our institute were analyzed with regard to clinical characteristics, pathological findings, surgical results, and pro

INTRODUCTION: Anorectal malignant melanoma (AMM) is a rare and aggressive malignance with poor prognosis, yet no consensus of treatment exists to date. Abdominoperineal resection surgery (APR) is the standard treatment of anorectal malignant melanoma, capable of controlling lymphatic spread and obtaining a large negative margin for local control but it can lead to complications. Wide local excision (WLE) allows for quicker recovery and has minimal impact on bowel function (i.e., bypassing the need for a stoma).

Rac GTPase activating protein 1 (RacGAP1) can regulate cytokinesis and cell differentiation. The oncogenic role of RacGAP1 has been partially studied in gastric cancer, colorectal cancer, and breast cancer. In the present study, we endeavor to evaluate its expression and functions in epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). We retrospectively collected the clinicopathological information of 117 patients who underwent curative surgery for EOC. Expression of RacGAP1 protein in primary tumor tissues was evaluated by immunohistochemistry, which was significantly associated with tumor pathological grade, t

Transrectal access still has some unsolved issues such as spatial orientation, infection, access and site closure. This study presents a simple technique to perform transcolonic access with survival in a swine model series. A new technique for NOTES perirectal access to perform retroperitoneoscopy, peritoneoscopy, liver and lymphnode biopsies was performed in 6 pigs, using Totally NOTES technique. The specimens were extracted transanally. The flexible endoscope was inserted through a posterior transmural incision and the retrorectal space. Cultures of bacteria were documented for the retroperi

We report a multimodal biomicroscopic system which offers high-frequency ultrasound B-mode, acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI), and multispectral imaging for qualitative tumor characterization ex vivo. Examinations of resected tissues from diseased regions such as tumors are crucial procedures during surgical operations to treat cancer. Particularly, if tiny tumors remain at surgical sites after tumor resection, such tumors can result in unwanted outcomes, such as cancer recurrence or metastasis to other organs. To avoid this, accurate characterizations of tumors resected during surgery a

Metachronous ovarian metastasis of colorectal adenocarcinoma is mostly identified within 3 years. Here we present a case of a 64-year-old woman with cecal cancer who underwent right oophorectomy for ovarian metastasis. Imaging was performed because of abdominal bloating; it detected a swollen right ovary with ascites. On laparotomy, a right ovarian tumor and cecal cancer were identified. After right oophorectomy, a diagnosis of unilateral ovarian metastasis from colon cancer was made. One month later, right hemicolectomy was performed. Eight years after initial surgery, the patient presented w

The patient was 77-year-old man. He visited our hospital with the chief complaint of an abdominal mass in March 2015. We diagnosed the patient with transverse colon cancer and he was suspected of having malignant lymphoma. In March 2016, we attempted to perform right hemicolectomy for the transverse colon cancer, but it was difficult because swollen lymph nodes had formed a large mass with the surrounding tissue, including vessels of the mesentery. We could only complete the surgery after mesenteric lymph node biopsy. On the basis of the results of this biopsy, we diagnosed angioimmunoblastic

Cyberknife(®) is a dedicated stereotactic radiotherapy device. This new technology permits precise delivery of high dose gradient radiation therapy while sparing the surrounding organs at risk. Hepatic metastases of colorectal cancer (HMCRC) are an example of a lesion where treatment with Cyberknife(®) is indicated because they are located in a radio-sensitive organ and curative treatment is based on focal eradication (resection, radiofrequency ablation,...). The local control rate at one year is reported to be 70 to 100% depending on the study. Tolerance is excellent with less than a 5% rate

We report a case of a 53-year-old female who presented with chronic constipation and abdominal discomfort for six months. Her past surgical history was significant for a total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingooophorectomy, performed eight years ago, for uterine fibroids and endometriosis. Workup revealed a mass measuring 5 × 4.5 × 2 cm in the rectosigmoid colon. Patient underwent a low anterior resection and a fungating, centrally ulcerated rectosigmoid mass with a positive mesorectal margin was removed. Histopathology revealed a heterologous mixed mesodermal tumor (chondroid and

Even in the era of new anticancer drugs, an optimal treatment strategy for colorectal cancer associated with liver metastasis and peritoneal carcinomatosis has yet to be established. Here we report the case of a long-term survivor with very advanced colon cancer who underwent repeated resective surgery and chemotherapy. This 69-year-old man underwent a Hartmann's procedure and the resection of peritoneal metastases of cancer of the rectosigmoid, which had infiltrated the retroperitoneum giving rise to multiple liver metastases and peritoneal carcinomatosis. The resection margin was positive fo

BACKGROUND: Socioeconomic status (SES) and social support influences cancer survival. If SES and social support affects cancer treatment has not been thoroughly explored.
METHODS: A cohort consisting of all patients who were initially diagnosed with or who developed metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC, n=781) in three Scandinavian university hospitals from October 2003 to August 2006 was set up. Clinical and socioeconomic data were registered prospectively.
RESULTS: Patients living alone more often had synchronous metastases at presentation and were less often treated with combination chemoth
