First reported multistate human Q fever outbreak in the United States, 2011.

In April, 2011, the Q fever bacterium Coxiella burnetii was identified at a Washington farm where an abortion storm took place among goats. Soon after, Q fever cases were reported among visitors to the farm from Washington and Montana. A cross-sectional investigation was conducted among humans and goats associated with the index farm or with 16 other farms that purchased goats from the index farm or housed goats at the index farm for breeding purposes. Questionnaire data were analyzed, along with human and goat specimens collected for evidence of C. burnetii infection. Twenty-one persons (19%)

Comparing acculturation scales and their relationship to cancer screening among older Mexican-American women.

BACKGROUND: Hispanic women in the United States are less likely to participate in breast and cervical cancer screening than women of other racial and ethnic groups. To plan appropriate interventions requires an understanding of the barriers to participation, including those of acculturation and assimilation. Few studies have examined the effects of acculturation and assimilation on the cancer-screening behavior of Mexican-American women. PURPOSE: Because of the extensive use of the Cuellar acculturation scale and the more recent use of the Hazuda scale, we explore the utility of these two mea

High prevalence and risk of malaria among asymptomatic individuals from villages with high prevalence of artemisinin partial resistance in Kyerwa district of Kagera region, north-western Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Although Tanzania adopted and has been implementing effective interventions to control and eventually eliminate malaria, the disease is still a leading public health problem, and the country experiences heterogeneous transmission. Recent studies reported the emergence of parasites with artemisinin partial resistance (ART-R) in Kagera region with high prevalence (> 10.0%) in two districts of Karagwe and Kyerwa. This study assessed the prevalence and predictors/risk of malaria infections among asymptomatic individuals living in a hyperendemic area where ART-R has emerged in Kyerwa Di

COVID-19 Epidemic in Malaysia: Epidemic Progression, Challenges, and Response.

COVID-19 pandemic is the greatest communicable disease outbreak to have hit Malaysia since the 1918 Spanish Flu which killed 34,644 people or 1% of the population of the then British Malaya. In 1999, the Nipah virus outbreak killed 105 Malaysians, while the SARS outbreak of 2003 claimed only 2 lives. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has so far claimed over 100 Malaysian lives. There were two waves of the COVID-19 cases in Malaysia. First wave of 22 cases occurred from January 25 to February 15 with no death and full recovery of all cases. The ongoing second wave, which commenced on February 27, p

IMPACT-DM: Improving Management of Poorly Controlled Type 2 Diabetes (A1c ≥9%) Through Coordinated, Team-Based Care in Federally Qualified Health Centers.

Uncontrolled type 2 diabetes disproportionately affects underserved populations and contributes to substantial morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. In Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), infrequent follow-up and inconsistent use of real-time glycemic data limit timely treatment intensification. In a multi-site FQHC serving underserved communities, baseline data demonstrated persistently high rates of uncontrolled diabetes (A1c ≥9%) despite access to in-house point-of-care A1c testing. Provider-dependent workflows, inconsistent follow-up, and low patient engagement were identifie

Implementing palliative reasoning in multiprofessional palliative care: A participatory action research in the Netherlands.

CONTEXT: In the Netherlands, two interventions exist to support healthcare professionals in assessing palliative care needs and providing multidimensional generalist palliative care. Separate use hindered communication, interprofessional collaboration, and multidimensional care. To address this, the two existing interventions were integrated into a single multiprofessional intervention, Palliative Reasoning. The Palliative Reasoning Working Method (PRWM) was developed to support its implementation in daily practice. OBJECTIVES: To iteratively adapt and implement the PRWM in primary care, hosp

Motivational interviewing as a clinical decision-support skill in time-limited practice.

OBJECTIVES: To reconceptualise motivational interviewing (MI) as a clinical decision-support skill for time-limited healthcare encounters and to clarify how this framing assists clinicians in navigating behaviour change without extending consultation time or compromising therapeutic relationships. METHODS: This discussion paper uses a narrative and conceptual synthesis approach integrating foundational motivational interviewing theory, systematic reviews and meta-analyses in healthcare settings, and implementation and fidelity literature relevant to routine clinical practice. Literature was i

Utilization of Non-pharmacological Interventions in Rett Syndrome: A Systematic Review of the Literature on Supportive Care Management.

INTRODUCTION: Rett syndrome (RTT) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by early childhood loss of mobility, reduced verbal communication, and behavioral impairment. Although non-pharmacological supportive interventions are widely used, there is a need to better understand their role in RTT care globally. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines and a PICOST framework, a systematic review of white (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane) and gray literature was conducted. Non‑pharmacological interventions examined in the United States (US) and outside the US (OUS) settings included ancillary serv

Evaluating the therapeutic efficacy of a modified ketogenic diet in children with autism spectrum disorder: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorder marked by persistent impairments in social communication and interaction, together with restricted and repetitive behavior or interests. Recent epidemiological data indicate that the prevalence of ASD has continued to increase worldwide. Current behavioral and pharmacological interventions remain limited in efficacy, particularly for associated comorbidities. In this context, metabolic interventions, especially the ketogenic diet (KD), have attracted growing interest as a potential therapeutic strategy.

Mapping of person-centred sexual and reproductive health interventions in primary healthcare settings: an umbrella review.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual and reproductive health (SRH) is an essential component of primary healthcare (PHC). Advancing person-centred SRH promotes gender equality and ensures women and girls access high-quality care that respects their autonomy. This umbrella review synthesises key findings on existing person-centred SRH interventions in PHC settings, globally. METHODS: Searches were conducted in five bibliometric databases from 2016 to 2024. Reviews were included if they referred to person-centred SRH interventions, aimed at enhancing women's autonomy, in PHC settings. Two researchers independe

Reversing the decline in peritoneal dialysis prevalence: The 2023 peritoneal dialysis reimbursement initiative in Taiwan.

BackgroundDespite the exceptional quality of peritoneal dialysis (PD) care in Taiwan and the country's globally high PD patient survival rates, PD utilization has declined. This trend is likely due to limited patient awareness and disparities in financial incentives between hemodialysis (HD) and PD. To address this issue, a new initiative has been launched to rebalance these incentives and promote PD adoption, with the goal of reversing the declining trend.MethodsEnforcing a policy to encourage PD therapy among specific patient populations is crucial, given its benefits for proactive patients

General anesthesia in dental treatments: where and how?

BACKGROUND: Patients with physical and/or mental disabilities exhibit higher caries activity and more treatment needs compared with the general population. Thus, the number of patients awaiting dental treatment under general anesthesia (GA) is far from negligible. Factors such as disabilities, presence of comorbidities, underlying medical conditions, and potential drug interactions render these patients a high-risk group for GA. Consequently, meticulous planning is essential when scheduling dental treatment under GA. The objective of the present research was to gather the opinions of anesthesi

Nutritional interventions in prison settings: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Mounting evidence has shown that incarceration can affect the health and well-being of individuals and increase the risk of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). Diet quality is known to be one of the main determinants of risk of NCDs, and dietary changes are the first approach used in primary care to reduce the incidence of NCDs. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to summarize the evidence for (1) the diet quality of inmates, and (2) the effect of nutritional intervention in prison systems. In addition, we aimed to describe limitations in the current literature and to suggest potent
