Spa therapy constitutes the use of mineral springs and thermal mud to soothe and heal various ailments. Like the mineral springs, seas and oceans are also important centers for spa therapy of which the most important is Dead Sea (DS). DS has been famous for thousands of years for its miraculous curative and cosmetic properties. Intensive research is going on using DS minerals in a wide range of dermatological conditions especially psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, vitiligo and other eczemas and several papers have been published in various international and pharmacological journals.

Chromosomal anomalies occur in 0.4% of live births. Ring chromosomes have been found for all human chromosomes and when it is replacing a normal chromosome, it results as a partial monosomy. The phenotype often overlaps that seen in comparable deletion syndromes of the same chromosomes. In the present report the authors describe the clinical manifestations of a girl with ring chromosome 18 (46XX,r18) including dysmorphic features, failure to thrive, global delay of development, hypothyroidism, atopic dermatitis, bilateral chronic otitis media, aortic regurgitation with patent foramen ovale and

We report the case of a 55-year-old woman without a history of atopic disease or drug allergy who developed a maculopapular symmetric exanthematous rash about 2 days after taking throat lozenges containing papaya juice. Patch tests gave negative reactions to the European standard series but were positive for papaya juice. A solution of 1% papain in water showed a weak and probably irritant reaction, while a 0.1% solution was negative. To our knowledge this is the first case report of systemic contact dermatitis to papaya without papain hypersensitivity.

Lichen planus pemphigoides (LPP) is a rare autoimmune subepidermal blistering disorder that combines lichenoid lesions of lichen planus with immunopathologic features of pemphigoid disease. We report an 8-year-old boy with homozygous sickle cell disease and severe atopic dermatitis who developed diffuse pruritic violaceous papules followed by tense bullae; subsequent histopathologic, immunofluorescence, and serologic findings confirmed LPP. The patient was initially treated with cyclosporine, with marked clinical improvement within 2-3 weeks. Dupilumab was subsequently initiated during the cyc

Leukotrienes (LTs) are lipid mediators that play pivotal roles in acute and chronic inflammation and allergic diseases. They exert their biological effects by binding to specific G-protein-coupled receptors. Each LT receptor subtype exhibits unique functions and expression patterns. LTs play roles in various allergic diseases, including asthma (neutrophilic asthma and aspirin-sensitive asthma), allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, allergic conjunctivitis, and anaphylaxis. This review summarizes the biology of LTs and their receptors, recent developments in the area of anti-LT strategies (in s

Chronic pruritus, or itch lasting greater than 6 weeks, is an increasingly common and debilitating medical problem. Recent studies have unveiled previously unrecognized neuroimmune axes whereby inflammatory cytokines act directly on the nervous system to promote itch. Thus, the emergence of newer targeted biologic therapies has generated the possibility of novel treatment strategies for chronic itch disorders. This article reviews the pathophysiology of multiple chronic itch disorders, including atopic dermatitis, chronic idiopathic pruritus, chronic urticaria, and prurigo nodularis. Furthermo

Alopecia areata (AA) is a common skin disease that is frequently emotionally devastating. Several studies have examined the effect of AA on health-related quality of life (HRQoL). We performed a systematic review of all published studies of HRQoL in patients with AA. Eleven studies met inclusion criteria, incorporating data from 1986 patients. Patients with AA consistently demonstrate poor HRQoL scores, with greater extent of scalp involvement associated with lower HRQoL. HRQoL experienced by patients with AA is similar to that seen in patients with other chronic skin diseases including atopic

BACKGROUND: Kounis syndrome is defined as the concurrence of acute coronary syndromes in the setting of allergic or anaphylactic reactions. It primarily affects men aged 40-70 years and is often associated with chest pain. This syndrome is often unrecognized and undiagnosed in clinical practice due to a low level of awareness. Herein, we present a case of type I Kounis syndrome in a young woman without chest pain.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 28-year-old Japanese woman with a history of atopic dermatitis received a glycyrrhizin, glutathione, and neurotropin preparation (a preparation of inflamed skin

INTRODUCTION: Vitamin D plays an important role in the immune system, and postnatal vitamin D insufficiency is one of the risk factors for the development of allergic disease. However, the effects of women's vitamin D intake during pregnancy on the prevalence of allergic disease in their children remain controversial.
METHODS: From the Japan Environment and Children's Study, an ongoing nationwide birth cohort study, we obtained information on maternal dietary vitamin D intake determined using a food frequency questionnaire and parent-reported allergic disease symptoms based on the ISAAC quest

Thymus and activation-regulated chemokine (TARC) is designated as a T-helper 2-type chemokine and its expression is upregulated in patients with atopic dermatitis. Previous studies reported that serum TARC levels in patients with psoriasis vulgaris (PsV) were comparable with those in healthy controls. However, the association of clinical severity of psoriasis with serum TARC levels and serum TARC levels in patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA) or generalized pustular psoriasis (GPP) have never been reported. We investigated the association of serum TARC level with psoriasis by the type of ps

BACKGROUND: Physical therapies refer to non-medical treatment strategies, including surgery, cryotherapy, UV phototherapy, and acupuncture. Most physical approaches are inappropriate in the context of itch. UV phototherapy and acupuncture may be effective in the management of itch.
METHODS: A literature search was performed using MEDLINE and EMBASE. Bibliographies were reviewed for relevant articles.
RESULTS: Narrowband UVB (311-313 nm) and UVA1 (340-400 nm) are equally effective in managing atopic dermatitis and associated itch. The efficacy of broadband UVB in reducing uraemic itch has bee

INTRODUCTION: In-office phototherapy is an effective treatment for many dermatologic conditions, however, many patients are unable to adhere to the rigorous travel and time commitments sometimes needed. Tanning bed facilities are nearly ubiquitous in modern society and could represent a more convenient means to obtain ultraviolet (UV) exposure when office phototherapy is not feasible. The purpose of this study was to review available evidence on the use of tanning facilities as a treatment for dermatologic conditions.
METHODS: PubMed was searched on February 2015 for "tanning beds" and "photo

INTRODUCTION: Narcolepsy frequently begins in childhood, and is characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness, with the presence of cataplexy reflecting a more severe phenotype. Narcolepsy may result from genetic predisposition involving deregulation of immune pathways, particularly involving T helper 2 cells (Th2). Increased activation of Th2 cells is usually manifested as allergic conditions such as rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, and asthma. We hypothesized that the presence of allergic conditions indicative of increased Th2 balance may dampen the severity of the phenotype in children with nar
