Rotary responds to women's health needs.

In working to improve the health of women, particularly in developing countries, governments face a monumental challenge. Limited resources, insufficient training, and poor infrastructure are just some of the obstacles to advancements in the field of female medicine. It is a goal of Rotary International, a worldwide association of service-minded business and professional people, to facilitate efforts to bring medical care to women and girls and to help them to build all-around healthy lives. This article gives background on Rotary International and highlights some of the ways Rotarians are usi…

Optimizing delivery of genetic merit in subtropical climates through advanced reproductive technologies.

The poultry industry in subtropical climates faces the challenges of climate and variable feed quality, in addition to those challenges encountered in temperate zones. These challenges aggravate the problem associated with the progressive decline in reproductive performance due to genetic selection for growth and yield traits. Heat stress is the major cause of lower fertility in both males and females, regardless of age. Under such situations, nongenetic factors play critical roles in maintaining or increasing reproductive efficiency in broiler breeders. The relatively low cost of skilled labo

A survey on management perspectives of the state of workplace health and safety practices in Kenya.

A baseline survey was conducted in 1995 on management perspectives of occupational health and safety (OHS) structures and practices in Kenya. This was achieved by interviewing management and supervisory staff attending 1 week multi-disciplinary courses that were organized by the Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE) and the International Labour Office (ILO) at hotel venues in Kenya. The purpose of the survey was to gain some insight into work safety conditions in Kenya and to assess the potential for a new OHS manual to meet existing knowledge gaps. The manual was locally developed in 1993/4 by

Nutritional status and socio-economic conditions as prognostic factors in the outcome of therapy in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

The majority of children on earth are to be found in the developing world, many of them malnourished members of impoverished families. Thus, the effects of socio-economic status (SES) on the therapeutic response of children with cancer are obviously relevant. The outcome of treatment in patients with the commonest form of cancer in childhood (acute lymphoblastic leukemia, ALL) is clearly related to their SES. Studies conducted mainly in developing countries have shown malnutrition to be an important prognostic factor in such children. However, other socio-economic conditions could affect the o…

Choice of cooking oils--myths and realities.

In contrast to earlier epidemiologic studies showing a low prevalence of atherosclerotic heart disease (AHD) and type-2 dependent diabetes mellitus (Type-2 DM) in the Indian subcontinent, over the recent years, there has been an alarming increase in the prevalence of these diseases in Indians--both abroad and at home, attributable to increased dietary fat intake. Replacing the traditional cooking fats condemned to be atherogenic, with refined vegetable oils promoted as "heart-friendly" because of their polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content, unfortunately, has not been able to curtail this

Poisoning in children: Indian scenario.

The retrospective data on childhood poisoning from eight regional hospitals in India has been reviewed. The demographic features and types of poisonings encountered have been compared. The analysis of the data indicated that pediatric poisonings constituted 0.23-3.3% of the total poisoning. The mortality ranged from 0.64-11.6% with highest being from Shimla. Accidental poisoning was common involving 50-90% of children below 5 years of age and males outnumbered the females. Suicidal poisoning was seen after 13 years of age and was due to drugs and household chemicals. One of the hospitals in De

B-scan ultrasonography in ophthalmic diseases.

Real time B-scan ultrasonography was utilised on 318 eyes of 298 patients for evaluation of 285 (90%) eyes with opaque media; three (1%) eyes, with clear media but suspected intraocular abnormalities and for proptosis in 30 (9%) cases. Two hundred and nine (66%) eyes had one or more detectable abnormalities. The most common abnormality was retinal detachment (39%) followed by vitreous opacities (31%), eye ball size abnormalities (12%), intraocular foreign bodies (4%), posterior staphyloma (3%) and retinal detachment with vitreous opacities (2%). Twenty eight out of thirty patients evaluated fo

Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene Meeting at Manson House, London, 16 February 1995. Aspects of Helicobacter pylori infection in the developing and developed world. Helicobacter pylori infection, nutrition and growth of West African infants.

Helicobacter pylori is probably the commonest bacterial infection of humankind. In adults, colonization of the stomach is associated with chronic gastritis and duodenal ulcer disease. However, children in the developing world acquire H. pylori soon after birth, and there is evidence that it plays a part, through suppression of the gastric acid barrier, in the pathogenesis of the syndrome of diarrhoea, malnutrition and growth failure. Infants born of mothers who secrete milk with high levels of anti-H. pylori immunoglobulin A (IgA) antibody acquire the infection later than those born of mothers
