Hemodynamic Impact of the Aberrant Subclavian Artery: A CFD Investigation.

Background/Objectives: The aberrant subclavian artery (ASA) represents the most common congenital anomaly of the aortic arch, and is frequently associated with a Kommerell diverticulum, an aneurysmal dilation at the anomalous vessel origin. This condition carries a significant risk of rupture and dissection, and growing evidence indicates that local hemodynamic alterations may contribute to its development and progression. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) provides a valuable non-invasive modality to assess biomechanical stresses and elucidate the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying thes…

Urinary catheter placement and adverse urinary outcomes with a focus on elevated risk in men with indwelling Foley catheters.

BACKGROUND: Prior studies indicated a link between urinary catheter use and urinary complications, highlighting the need for comprehensive, … ary tract cancer, urolithiasis, urethral stricture, obstructive uropathy, reflux uropathy, fistula, diverticulum, caruncle, false passage, prolapsed urethral mucosa, urinary tract rupture, and urinary tract infection. These were assessed using the Fine and Gray sub-distribution proportional hazards model to compare between the Foley and non-Foley groups. Sensi …

Evaluation of double faced transverse preputial (onlay) island flap for hypospadias repair in pediatrics: a randomized controlled study.

BACKGROUND: The preputial onlay island flap technique has been popularized for hypospadias repair as a result of offering a consistent combi … nderwent double face onlay island flap (2 glannular dehiscence, 1 penile rotation, 1 fistula, and 1 diverticulum), as opposed to 9 patients in group B (26.4%) who underwent transverse inner preputial flap (3 developed glannular dehiscence, 2 skin flap necrosis, 3 fistulae, and 1 diverticulum). After management of the complications, all patients had good surgic …

Road to a rare diagnosis: Description of novel unbalanced translocation causing partial trisomy 17p.

Trisomy 17 is a rare chromosomal disorder. Existing literature on the topic is limited and mostly refer to mosaic Trisomy 17 cases. Our report summarizes the 70-day clinical course of a late preterm neonate with partial Trisomy 17p karyotype 46,XY,der(14)t(14;17)(p11.1;p11.2) dpat. Trisomy 17 due to unbalanced translocation is rare, and our case elaborates the clinical presentation with intestinal malfunction without any anatomical pathology and urethral diverticulum and the ethical dilemma in decision-making. The male proband was born at 35 weeks with antenatal findings of multiple neurologic…

A systematic review of the perforated duodenal diverticula: lessons learned from the last decade.

BACKGROUND: The perforated duodenal diverticulum remains a rare clinical entity, the optimal management of which has not been well established. Historically, primary surgery has been the preferred treatment modality. This was called into question during the last decade, with the successful application of non-operative therapy in selected patients. The aim of this systematic review is to identify cases of perforated duodenal diverticula published over the past decade and to assess any subsequent evolution in treatment. METHODS: A systematic review of English and non-English articles reporting …

Stent-assisted coiling of dural sinus diverticula: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Dural sinus diverticula are a rare vascular etiology of pulsatile tinnitus. Patients typically present with disabling symptoms a … 2012 to February 2020. Eight of these had symptomatic pulsatile tinnitus secondary to a dural sinus diverticulum and were successfully treated with stent-assisted coil embolization. No complications occurred. CONCLUSION: Our case series demonstrates that endovascular dural sinus stent-assisted coil embolization for symptomatic dural sinus diverticula is a saf …

Gastric diverticula in six cats: a case series (2011-2020).

CASE SERIES SUMMARY: Gastric diverticulum (GD) is a rare condition that is described adequately in humans but has not been reported in cats. This case series describes six cats with GD, including three that were published in a previous abstract. All cats presented for a variety of gastrointestinal disorders, including chronic vomiting, weight loss and anorexia, and underwent negative contrast radiography to diagnose GD. All but one cat underwent surgical resection of the GD via partial gastrectomy, while the remaining cat was euthanized. Resection of the GD was associated with reduction of rep…

Evaluation of molecular and genetic predisposing parameters at diverticular disease of the colon.

BACKGROUND: Diverticular disease (DD) refers to the presence of diverticula throughout the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, mainly along colon. DD might evolve into diverticulitis that is accompanied by severe clinical presentation, which includes abscess formation, perforation, stricture, obstruction and/or fistula. AIM: The aim of the present review is to summarize the role of molecular and genetic factors in DD development, as well as their possible contribution towards new prognostic indicators, diagnostic algorithms and new therapeutic approaches. METHODS AND RESULTS: Except from common pre

A 54-Year-Old Man with Tracheomegaly, Tracheal Diverticulas and Bronchiectasis--Mounier-Kuhn Syndrome.

Mounier-Kuhn syndrome is a rare idiopathic clinical, radiological and bronchoscopic disorder characterised by abnormal dilatation of the tracheo-bronchial tree. The usual presentation is with recurrent lower respiratory tract infections. Herein, we report the case of an adult male who was diagnosed to have Mounier-Kuhn syndrome based on radiographic finding of a tracheal diameter of 45.5 mm on computed tomography and dynamic complete collapse of the tracheo-bronchial tree on forced expiration, observed during ronchoscopy.

Editorial: new thoughts on the association between diverticulosis and irritable bowel syndrome.

As our population ages it is increasingly common to encounter patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)-like symptoms and diverticulosis, but the nature of the association is obscure. This Editorial discusses the paper from Japan showing an association between IBS-like symptoms and left-sided but not right-sided diverticulosis. The left colon with its higher motor activity is more likely to be associated with complications of diverticulosis, including perforation and abscess formation. The underlying pathophysiology of the syndrome of post-diverticulitis IBS is discussed and clinical marker

CDX2 in congenital gut gastric-type heteroplasia and intestinal-type Meckel diverticula.

The mechanisms that determine organ identity along the digestive tract in humans are poorly understood. Here we describe the rare case of a young patient who presented with congenital gastric-type heteroplasia in the midjejunum. The lesions, located along the antimesenteric midline of the gut, were made of histologically and functionally normal gastric epithelium without inflammation or in situ/invasive carcinoma. They resembled the anatomy of the lesions developing in the mouse gut as a result of haploinsufficiency of the Cdx2 homeobox gene. The lesions were devoid of CDX2 but without mutatio
