[Effects of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation on autonomic nervous function in rats with functional dyspepsia].

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) on the autonomic nerve function in a rat model of functional dyspepsia (FD), so as to explore the mechanism of taVNS underlying regulation of FD. METHODS: SD rats were randomly divided into normal control group(n=8) and FD model group(n=26).The FD model was replicated with iodoacetamide gavage. The FD model rats were randomly divided into model, taVNS, sham-taVNS and Zusanli(ST36) groups, with 6 rats in each group. Rats in the taVNS group received electrical stimulation of auricular concha, while the s

Effects of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation on cardiovascular autonomic control in health and disease.

Autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction is a well-known feature of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Studies on heart rate variability (HRV), a non-invasive method useful in investigating the status of cardiovascular autonomic control, have shown that a predominance of sympathetic modulation not only contributes to the progression of CVDs but has a pivotal role in their onset. Current therapies focus more on inhibition of sympathetic activity, but the presence of drug-resistant conditions and the invasiveness of some surgical procedures are an obstacle to complete therapeutic success. On the

TDCS to the right anterior temporal lobe facilitates insight problem-solving.

Problem-solving is essential for advances in cultural, social, and scientific knowledge. It is also one of the most challenging cognitive processes to facilitate. Some problem-solving is deliberate, but frequently people solve problems with a sudden insight, also known as a Eureka or "Aha!" moment. The advantage of solving problems via insight is that these solutions are more accurate, relying on a unique pattern of neural activity, compared to deliberative strategies. The right Anterior Temporal Lobe (rATL), putatively involved in semantic integration, is distinctively activated when people e

Indices of Change, Expectations, and Popularity of Biological Treatments for Major Depressive Disorder between 1988 and 2017: A Scientometric Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is the most common psychiatric disorder with high prevalence and disease burden. Biological treatments of MDD over the last several decades include a wide range of antidepressants and neurostimulation therapies. While recent meta-analyses have explored the efficacy and tolerability of antidepressants, the changing trends of biological treatments have not been evaluated. Our study measured the indices of change, expectations, and popularity of biological treatments of MDD between 1988 and 2017. METHODS: We performed a scientometric analysis to identi

Efficacy and acceptability of non-invasive brain stimulation for the treatment of adult unipolar and bipolar depression: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised sham-controlled trials.

We examined the efficacy and acceptability of non-invasive brain stimulation in adult unipolar and bipolar depression. Randomised sham-controlled trials of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and theta-burst stimulation (TBS), without co-initiation of another treatment, were included. We analysed effects on response, remission, all-cause discontinuation rates and continuous depression severity measures. Fifty-six studies met our criteria for inclusion (N = 3058, mean age = 44.96 years, 61.73% female). Response rates demonstrated efficacy of h

[Treatment strategies for auditory verbal hallucinations].

BACKGROUND: Auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) are experienced not only by patients diagnosed with schizophrenia, but also by patients with other disorders (some of which may be psychiatric) and in the general population. The ensuing affliction may be severe and can sometimes result in dangerous behaviour. Although various treatment options are available for AVH, only a few have been investigated in randomised placebo-controlled trials. AIM: To provide an overview of the literature relating to the effectiveness of antipsychotics, cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), electroconvulsive therap

Auditory brainstem implants.

The development of cochlear implantation has allowed the majority of patients deafened after the development of language to regain significant auditory benefit. In a subset of patients, however, loss of hearing results from destruction of the cochlear nerves, rendering cochlear implantation ineffective. The most common cause of bilateral destruction of the cochlear nerves is neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2). The hallmark of this genetic disorder is the development of bilateral acoustic neuromas, the growth or removal of which causes deafness in most patients. Patients with NF2 may benefit from d

The clinical diagnostic utility of transcranial magnetic stimulation: report of an IFCN committee.

The review focuses on the clinical diagnostic utility of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). The central motor conduction time (CMCT) is a sensitive method to detect myelopathy and abnormalities may be detected in the absence of radiological changes. CMCT may also detect upper motor neuron involvement in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The diagnostic sensitivity may be increased by using the triple stimulation technique (TST), by combining several parameters such as CMCT, motor threshold and silent period, or by studying multiple muscles. In peripheral facial nerve palsies, TMS may be used

Motor cortex stimulation for chronic non-malignant pain: current state and future prospects.

Motor cortex stimulation (MCS) was proposed by Tsubokawa in 1991 for the treatment of post-stroke thalamic pain. Since that time, the indications have been increased and included trigeminal neuropathic pain and later other types of central and peripheral deafferentation pain. The results reported in the literature are quite good; the mean long-term success rate is 80% in facial pain and 53% in non-facial pain. Our own results are less impressive: 4 of 14 patients (28%) experienced a greater than 40% pain relief, but in 2 of them the effect faded with time. Only few minor complications have bee

Effect of photic conditioning on blink reflex recovery function in blepharospasm.

Patients with blepharospasm may have selective sensitivity to photic stimuli, for their symptoms are often aggravated after exposure to brightness. To investigate the pathophysiology underlying this phenomenon, we compared the effects of electric and photic conditioning on electrically-evoked blink reflex in 21 patients with blepharospasm and 11 age-matched control subjects. With electric conditioning, R1 was facilitated at inter-stimulus intervals (ISIs) of up to 100 ms in both groups. R2 was inhibited at all ISIs longer than 20 ms in the normals, but to a much lesser extent in the patients,

[Analysis of cortical excitation and inhibition using transcranial magnetic stimulation].

The method of magnetic transcranial stimulation of the motor cortex produces both excitatory and inhibitory effect. Definition of excitability and inhibitory threshold represents clinically useful indicator. In order to reduce variability of the thresholds, it is important to notice mental activity, posture, type of magnetic stimulator, involuntary movement, muscle tonus and age. Excitability threshold was elevated in patients with stroke and reduced in patients with epilepsy. Enhancement of motor excitability by subthreshold magnetic stimulation of the motor cortex prior to voluntary movement

Patterns of intracellular potentials in salamander mitral/tufted cells in response to odor stimulation.

1. Changes in membrane potential and temporal patterns of spikes were analyzed in 30 output cells in the salamander olfactory bulb in response to stimulation with 1-s pulses of the odorants isoamyl acetate, cineole, and camphor. The odor responses were more complex than responses to electrical stimulation of the olfactory nerve or olfactory tracts, with which they were compared. Most began with hyperpolarization and contained prolonged hyperpolarizing and depolarizing potentials that appeared to be compound postsynaptic potentials. These potentials were related to periods of spike inhibition a

Does the Mauthner cell conform to the criteria of the command neuron concept?

The relationship between the Mauthner (M) cell action potential of the bullfrog tadpole and the rapid tail-flip was studied with electrophysiological and video-recording techniques. Single action potentials were elicited in the M-cell by vibratory stimulation or electrical stimulation of the eighth cranial nerve. These impulses were followed by a tail-flip to the side contralateral to the M-soma. Similarly, a tail-flip was produced by direct intracellular stimulation of the M-cell. Hyperpolarization of the M-soma blocked orthodromic action potentials and prevented the tail-flip. Therefore, the

Modification of stimulated lacrimal gland flow by sympathetic nerve impulses in rabbit.

This study was undertaken to determine if sympathetic nerve impulses modify lacrimal gland fluid (LGF) flow, which was continuously recorded from a cannula in the excretory duct of the lacrimal gland in rabbits anesthetized with pentobarbital sodium. The preganglionic trunk of the superior cervical ganglion was stimulated with electrical stimuli during pilocarpine-induced and reflexly induced secretion. Stimuli equal to or 6-8 times stronger than the intensity that produced maximal pupil dilation caused inhibition followed by poststimulus enhancement of LGF flow when the prestimulus LGF flow w

Deep brain stimulation in Alzheimer's disease.

Benefits from symptomatic and etiologic treatments in Alzheimer's Disease (AD), the most frequent dementia, are still insufficient. During the last decade, several studies showed that electrical stimulation of memory circuits could enhance memory in humans without memory impairment. First, improvement of verbal recollection was reported after deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the fornix in the hypothalamus in a patient treated for morbid obesity. Several studies in epileptic patients explored by deep electrodes reported that visuo-spatial memorization was facilitated by electrical stimulation of

The Internal Superior Laryngeal Nerve in Humans: Evidence for Pure Sensory Function.

OBJECTIVES: To determine if the internal branch of the superior laryngeal nerve (iSLN) provides direct motor innervation to the interarytenoid muscle, a laryngeal adductor critical for airway protection. We studied the iSLN-evoked motor response in the interarytenoid and other laryngeal muscles. If the iSLN is purely sensory, there will be no detectable short latency motor response upon supramaximal stimulation, indicating the absence of a direct efferent conduction path. STUDY DESIGN: Intraoperative case series. METHODS: In seven anesthetized patients undergoing laryngectomy for unilateral
