Flash Suppression Reveals an Additional Nonvisual Extrastriate Contribution for Amblyopic Suppression.

PURPOSE: A growing body of evidence suggests that anomalous binocular interactions underlie the deficits in amblyopia, but their nature and neural basis are still not fully understood. METHODS: We examined the behavioral and neural correlates of interocular suppression in 13 adult amblyopes and 13 matched controls using a flash suppression paradigm while recording steady-state visual evoked potentials. The strength of suppression was manipulated by changing the contrast (10%, 20%, 30%, or 100%) of the flash stimulus, or the suppressor, presented either in the dominant (fellow) or nondominant …

Tailoring transcranial alternating current stimulation based on endogenous event-related P3 to modulate premature responses: a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is a brain stimulation method for modulating ongoing endogenous oscillatory activity at specified frequency during sensory and cognitive processes. Given the overlap between event-related potentials (ERPs) and event-related oscillations (EROs), ERPs can be studied as putative biomarkers of the effects of tACS in the brain during cognitive/sensory task performance. OBJECTIVE: This preliminary study aimed to test the feasibility of individually tailored tACS based on individual P3 (latency and frequency) elicited during a cued prem

Transdiagnostic psychopathology in the light of robust single-trial event-related potentials.

Recent evidence indicates that event-related potentials (ERPs) as measured on the electroencephalogram (EEG) are more closely related to transdiagnostic, dimensional measures of psychopathology (TDP) than to diagnostic categories. A comprehensive examination of correlations between well-studied ERPs and measures of TDP is called for. In this study, we recruited 50 patients with emotional disorders undergoing 14 weeks of transdiagnostic group psychotherapy as well as 37 healthy comparison subjects (HC) matched in age and sex. HCs were assessed once and patients three times throughout treatment

Aberrant error monitoring in traumatic brain injuries: A meta-analysis of event-related potential studies.

OBJECTIVE: Although individuals with traumatic brain injuries (TBI) often manifest altered error monitoring, evidence using event-related potentials (ERPs) to index these cortical processes is inconsistent. Therefore, this meta-analysis study aimed to comprehensively compare the error-related negativity (ERN) and error positivity (Pe) between individuals with TBI and healthy controls (HC) from the existing literature. METHODS: Literature search was performed using PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library. The effect sizes (Hedges' g) in the comparisons of ERN and Pe amplitudes bet

Effects of 90 dB pure tone exposure on auditory and cardio-cerebral system functions in macaque monkeys.

Excessive noise exposure presents significant health risks to humans, affecting not just the auditory system but also the cardiovascular and central nervous systems. This study focused on three male macaque monkeys as subjects. 90 dB sound pressure level (SPL) pure tone exposure (frequency: 500Hz, repetition rate: 40Hz, 1 min per day, continuously exposed for 5 days) was administered. Assessments were performed before exposure, during exposure, immediately after exposure, and at 7-, 14-, and 28-days post-exposure, employing auditory brainstem response (ABR) tests, electrocardiograms (ECG), and

The Effect of Various Spinal Neurostimulation Paradigms on the Supraspinal Somatosensory Evoked Response: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Spinal neurostimulation is a therapy for otherwise intractable chronic pain. Spinal neurostimulation includes stimulation of the spinal cord (SCS), dorsal root ganglion (DRGS), and dorsal root entry zone (DREZS). New paresthesia-free neurostimulation paradigms may rely on different mechanisms of action from those of conventional tonic neurostimulation. The aim of this systematic review is to assess the existing knowledge on the effect of spinal neurostimulation on somatosensory processing in patients with chronic pain. We therefore reviewed the existing literature on the effect o

Distinct neural mechanisms support inner speaking and inner hearing.

Humans have the ability to mentally examine speech. This covert form of speech production is often accompanied by sensory (e.g., auditory) percepts. However, the cognitive and neural mechanisms that generate these percepts are still debated. According to a prominent proposal, inner speech has at least two distinct phenomenological components: inner speaking and inner hearing. We used transcranial magnetic stimulation to test whether these two phenomenologically distinct processes are supported by distinct neural mechanisms. We hypothesised that inner speaking relies more strongly on an online

Intimate Relationships Weaken Female Competition: Evidence from Phase-amplitude Coupling and Event-Related Potentials.

Competition, an essential component of social interaction, frequently occurs in daily life, and the impact of intimate relationships on women's competition has not yet been revealed. In this study, the visual target paradigm was used to explore the neural mechanisms underlying the regulation of female competitiveness by intimate relationships using event-related potential (ERP) data, time-frequency analysis, and brain functional connectivity. The research results indicate that, the P1, the N4, and the LPP were sensitive to the impact of intimate relationships on competition. Compared to compet

Relational memory function in schizophrenia: Electrophysiological evidence for early perceptual and late associative abnormalities.

We used event-related potentials (ERPs) to examine encoding and retrieval during episodic memory in people with schizophrenia (SZ) and biological relatives of SZ (SZr). To isolate contextual from item-specific aspects of memory, we employed the Relational and Item-Specific Encoding (RISE) task. Twenty two healthy controls (HCs), 22 SZ, and 19 SZr, encoded visual depictions of objects when displayed alone (item-specific) or in pairs (relational encoding), and were later tested on recognition of specific objects and whether pairs of objects had appeared together. An early posterior component (P2

The Importance of Subjective Cognitive Decline Recognition and the Potential of Molecular and Neurophysiological Biomarkers-A Systematic Review.

Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are early stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Neurophysiological markers such as electroencephalography (EEG) and event-related potential (ERP) are emerging as alternatives to traditional molecular and imaging markers. This paper aimed to review the literature on EEG and ERP markers in individuals with SCD. We analysed 30 studies that met our criteria, with 17 focusing on resting-state or cognitive task EEG, 11 on ERPs, and two on both EEG and ERP parameters. Typical spectral changes were indicative of EEG rhythm slowing an

An Experimental Therapeutics Approach to the Development of a Novel Computerized Treatment Targeting Error-Related Brain Activity in Young Children.

In the current study, we utilize an experimental medicine approach to examine the extent to which a single-session, computerized intervention impacts a transdiagnostic neural marker of risk (i.e., the error-related negativity [ERN]) in 70 children between the ages of 6 and 9 years. The ERN is a deflection in the event-related potential occurring after an individual makes a mistake on a lab-based task and has been shown to be transdiagnostically associated with a variety of anxiety disorders (e.g., social anxiety, generalized anxiety), obsessive-compulsive disorder, and depressive disorders in

Fear of negative evaluation modulates the processing of social evaluative feedback with different valence and contexts.

Fear of negative evaluation (FNE) is a susceptible and maintaining factor of social anxiety disorders. However, the question, how people process negative evaluation is influenced by individual differences in FNE, is poorly understood. To clarify the habitual processing characteristics of individuals with different levels of FNE, electroencephalography was recorded when two groups of participants with high FNE (hFNE) and low FNE (lFNE) performed a social evaluation perception task in which the feedback context/source (human vs. a computer) and valence (thumb-up/like vs. thumb-down/dislike) were

Electrically evoked mismatch negativity responses to loudness and pitch cues in cochlear implant users.

Objective measurements could improve cochlear implant (CI) fitting, especially for CI users who have difficulty assessing their hearing impressions. In this study, we investigated the electrically evoked mismatch negativity (eMMN) brain potential as a mainly preattentive response to pitch and loudness changes. In an electrophysiological exploratory study with 21 CI users, pitch and loudness cues were presented in controlled oddball paradigms that directly electrically stimulated the CI via software. Out of them 17 valid data sets were analyzed. A pitch cue was produced by changing the stimulat

Medial prefrontal transcranial alternating current stimulation for apathy in Huntington's disease.

We investigated the effects of transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) targeted to the bilateral medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and administered at either delta or alpha frequencies, on brain activity and apathy in people with Huntington's disease (HD) (n = 17). Given the novelty of the protocol, neurotypical controls (n = 20) were also recruited. All participants underwent three 20-min sessions of tACS; one session at alpha frequency (Individualised Alpha Frequency (IAF), or 10 Hz when an IAF was not detected); one session at delta frequency (2 Hz); and a session of sham tACS. Pa

Perceptual learning of random acoustic patterns: Impact of temporal regularity and attention.

Perceptual learning is a powerful mechanism to enhance perceptual abilities and to form robust memory representations of previously unfamiliar sounds. Memory formation through repeated exposure takes place even for random and complex acoustic patterns devoid of semantic content. The current study sought to scrutinise how perceptual learning of random acoustic patterns is shaped by two potential modulators: temporal regularity of pattern repetition and listeners' attention. To this end, we adapted an established implicit learning paradigm and presented short acoustic sequences that could contai

The excessive generalization of fear affected by perceptual bias in experimental pain individuals: Evidence from an event-related potential study.

INTRODUCTION: Excessiv generalization of fear contributes to the development and maintenance of pain. Prior research has demonstrated the importance of perception in fear generalization and found that individuals in painful conditions exhibited perceptual bias. However, the extent to which perceptual bias in pain affects the generalization of pain-related fear and its underlying neural activity remains unclear. METHODS: Here, we tested whether perceptual bias in experimental pain individuals led to the overgeneralization of pain-related fear by recording behavioral and neural responses. To th

Electrophysiological evidence of global structure-from-motion processing of biological motion in 6-month-old infants.

Understanding the actions of others is a fundamental and important skill for navigating our social world. A striking example of how our visual system is sensitive to others' actions is the phenomenon of biological motion (BM), in which the visual system encodes socially relevant information regarding action from as few as a dozen point-lights of motion. Previous studies have demonstrated that infants can discriminate between BM and other types of actions. However, there is a lack of electrophysiological evidence outlining the exact point of time within the first year of life when global struct
