Effects of chronic plus acute prolonged stress on measures of coping style, anxiety, and evoked HPA-axis reactivity.

Exposure to psychological trauma is the precipitating factor for PTSD. In addition, a history of chronic or traumatic stress exposure is a predisposing risk factor. We have developed a Chronic plus Acute Prolonged Stress (CAPS) treatment for rats that models some of the characteristics of stressful events that can lead to PTSD in humans. We have previously shown that CAPS enhances acute fear responses and impairs extinction of conditioned fear. Further, CAPS reduced the expression of glucocorticoid receptors in the medial prefrontal cortex. In this study we examined the effects of CAPS exposur…

The rise and fall of the lyme disease vaccines: a cautionary tale for risk interventions in American medicine and public health.

CONTEXT: Two vaccines to prevent Lyme disease (LD) were developed and tested in the 1990s. Despite evidence of their safety and efficacy in … evertheless hoped to appeal to consumers' desire for protection and control and to their widespread fear of the disease. The LD advocacy community initially supported the vaccines but soon became critical opponents. The vaccines' success was seen as threatening their central position that LD was chronic, protean, and difficult to treat. The activists' …

Sexual function and psychological status among males and females with ischemic heart disease.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) may also suffer from mental and sexual problems, and we should consider the mutual … tion and sexuality scale (RSS). Three subscores were calculated for sexual function, frequency, and fear, with higher scores indicative of a poorer condition. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The HADS and the RSS. RESULTS: Depressive symptoms and anxiety were more severe among our female subjects than they were among the male ones. In addition, the scores for …

Mercury use and exposure among Santeria practitioners: religious versus folk practice in Northern New Jersey, USA.

OBJECTIVE: To understand and characterize exposure to and use of elemental mercury among practitioners of Afro-Cuban religions in Hudson Cou … not familiar with the most significant exposure pathway, inhalation of mercury vapor. A climate of fear surrounds the use of mercury in this community, so that health concerns pale in comparison to fear of reprisal from authorities. Among those who sell or formerly sold mercury, several shared the erroneous belief that it was illegal to sell mercury i …

BACKGROUND: Falls among older adults are a major public health issue and the leading cause of injury-related deaths. They affect older adults' physical, social, and psychological well-being. Although CBT-based interventions show promise for fall prevention, they have not yet been specifically applied to this population. AIMS: To evaluate and synthesize the effects of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) on older adults' fear of falling, perceived consequences of falls, physical performance, and balance: METHODS: A systematic search of Academic Search Complete, CINAHL Plus with Full Text, Cochra…

Digital Dependence in Aging: Nomophobia as the New Mental Health Threat for Older Adults.

Nomophobia, or the fear of being without a mobile phone, is increasingly recognized as an emerging psychological issue, particularly in older adult populations. As technology dependence grows among older adults, the mental health impacts of disconnection from digital devices can manifest in anxiety, cognitive disorientation, and social withdrawal. This geriatric update explores the intersection of aging and digital dependence, emphasizing nomophobia's relevance as a mental health concern for older adults. The article highlights key signs of nomophobia in older adults, including excessive phone…

Threat Acquisition and Extinction Differences Between Patients With Panic Disorder or Specific Phobia and Non-Clinical Controls: A Systematic Review.

The study of threat conditioning and extinction processes in anxiety disorders (AD) may further our understanding of the genesis, maintenance, and treatment of these conditions. As it stands, there have been multiple systematic reviews carried out in this area. Patient-control differences in threat acquisition and extinction have been investigated in relation to ADs, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and social anxiety disorder (SAD). However, this remains to be investigated in either panic disorder (PD) or specific phobia (SP). In this paper, a narrative systematic review was carried out t

Latent-state and model-based learning in PTSD.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterized by altered emotional and behavioral responding following a traumatic event. In this article, we review the concepts of latent-state and model-based learning (i.e., learning and inferring abstract task representations) and discuss their relevance for clinical and neuroscience models of PTSD. Recent data demonstrate evidence for brain and behavioral biases in these learning processes in PTSD. These new data potentially recast excessive fear towards trauma cues as a problem in learning and updating abstract task representations, as opposed to…

State of the Science: Disgust and the Anxiety Disorders.

Anxiety disorders have long been conceptualized as disorders of fear, while other emotions have largely been overlooked. However, an emerging literature has increasingly implicated disgust in certain anxiety-related disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder, specific phobias (e.g., spider phobia), health anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Roughly two decades of research has accumulated evidence identifying various mechanisms linking disgust-related phenomena to these disorders. In the present "State of the Science" review, we sought to summarize the current state of the liter…

Brief imaginal exposure exercises for social anxiety disorder: A randomized controlled trial of a self-help momentary intervention app.

INTRODUCTION: Emerging technological interventions for psychological disorders are being developed continually. Offering imaginal exposure exercises as a self-help intervention presents the opportunity to acquire foundational skills to address social anxiety. The current study evaluates the feasibility and effectiveness of a novel smartphone application for social interaction anxiety. METHODS: Participants (n = 82) were adults meeting criteria for social anxiety disorder. They were randomly assigned to imaginal exposure (IE; n = 39) or self-monitoring (n = 43) delivered multiple times daily v

Attention bias vs. attention control modification for social anxiety disorder: A randomized controlled trial.

Gaze-Contingent Music Reward Therapy (GC-MRT) is an eye-tracking-based attention bias modification protocol for social anxiety disorder (SAD) with established clinical efficacy. However, it remains unclear if improvement following GC-MRT hinges on modification of threat-related attention or on more general enhancement of attention control. Here, 50 patients with SAD were randomly allocated to GC-MRT using either threat faces or shapes. Results indicate comparable reductions in social anxiety and co-morbid depression symptoms in the two conditions. Patients in the shapes condition showed a sign
