Development of a Cryptosporidium-arsenic multi-risk assessment model for infant formula prepared with tap water in France.

Tap water is used in France to reconstitute powder infant formula, although it is not sterile and possibly contaminated by microbiological and chemical hazards. The present study aims to quantify risks of using tap water in France for the preparation of infant formula, during the first six months of life. Cryptosporidium and arsenic were selected as hazards of greatest concern in microbiology and chemistry, respectively. A probabilistic model was developed using French (when available) and European (alternatively) data. Second order Monte Carlo simulation was used to separate uncertainty and v

The influence of nighttime feeding of carbohydrate or protein combined with exercise training on appetite and cardiometabolic risk in young obese women.

Single macronutrient intake prior to sleep reduces appetite but may negatively impact insulin sensitivity in sedentary obese women. The present study examined the additive impact of nighttime feeding of whey (WH), casein (CAS), or carbohydrate (CHO) combined with exercise training on appetite, cardiometabolic health, and strength in obese women. Thirty-seven sedentary obese women (WH, n = 13, body mass index (BMI) 34.4 ± 1.3 kg/m(2); CAS, n = 14, BMI 36.5 ± 1.8 kg/m(2); CHO, n = 10, BMI 33.1 ± 1.7 kg/m(2)) consumed WH, CAS, or CHO (140-150 kcal/serving), every night of the week, within 30 min

Maternal Deworming Research Study (MADRES) protocol: a double-blind, placebo-controlled randomised trial to determine the effectiveness of deworming in the immediate postpartum period.

INTRODUCTION: Soil-transmitted helminth infections are endemic in 114 countries worldwide, and cause the highest burden of disease among all neglected tropical diseases. The WHO includes women of reproductive age as a high-risk group for infection. The primary consequence of infection in this population is anaemia. During lactation, anaemia may contribute to reduced quality and quantity of milk, decreasing the duration of exclusive breastfeeding and lowering the age at weaning. To date, no study has investigated the effects of maternal postpartum deworming on infant or maternal health outcomes

Altered brain-derived neurotrophic factor blood levels and gene variability are associated with anorexia and bulimia.

Murine models and association studies in eating disorder (ED) patients have shown a role for the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in eating behavior. Some studies have shown association of BDNF -270C/T single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) with bulimia nervosa (BN), while BDNF Val66Met variant has been shown to be associated with both BN and anorexia nervosa (AN). To further test the role of this neurotrophin in humans, we screened 36 SNPs in the BDNF gene and tested for their association with ED and plasma BDNF levels as a quantitative trait. We performed a family-based association stu

Use of prick-tests in the screening of immediate allergy to protein: 16 cases.

BACKGROUND: Allergy to protein hydrolysates seem to be on the rise but screening is difficult because of the wide range of symptoms. The goal of our study was to improve the screening process by skin prick testing infants with an anaphylactic form of allergy to cow's milk. METHODS: We studied 92 infants who were allergic to cow's milk. The diagnosis was based on the results of skin prick tests, specific IgE assays, and oral food challenges. The skin prick tests were performed using a number of protein hydrolysate formulae and a synthetic amino acid-based formula available in France. RESULTS:

Nutrition and human cancer.

It is now widely accepted that nutrition is as important as tobacco as a cause of human cancer. However, whereas we can dispense with tobacco with general benefit to health, we cannot do without food. It is, therefore, necessary to determine the pattern of nutrition that is associated with the lowest overall cancer risk. This is made more difficult by the fact that some kinds of cancer are associated with overnutrition (e.g., that of the colon, breast, and prostate) and some with poor nutrition (e.g., esophagus, stomach, and liver). The tools to determine this are epidemiology, animal models,

Growth of colorectal polyps: design of a prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled intervention study in patients with colorectal polyps.

One hundred and sixteen patients were included, during 18 months, in a double-blind placebo-controlled intervention study, with calcium, vitamins A, C, E and selenium (in a cocktail) or placebo against growth of colonic polyps. Patients were randomized within three arms, according to diameter of the largest polyp, < 5 mm, 5-9 mm or > 9 mm. Polyps > 9 mm were resected, the others were left to be measured annually before resection after 3 years. The protocol (performed in all of the patients) included registration of demographic data, family and personal history, measurement of polyps, collectio

Microplastics in poultry: Sources, bioaccumulation and human health consequences.

The widespread use and environmental persistence of plastics have led to growing concerns about microplastic (MP) contamination across food systems including poultry production. This review summarizes current knowledge on the sources, pathways of transmission and impacts of MPs in poultry, highlighting their potential risks to animal and human health. Poultry are highly exposed to MPs through contaminated feed ingredients, drinking water, litter and the surrounding environment. Plastic residues from feed packaging, degraded farm equipment and atmospheric deposition contribute further to contam

What are influencers feed-ing us?: A photo-voice approach on emerging adults' social media food environment.

Healthy eating is a complex and often confusing topic, especially for young people. Conflicting advice, trends, and body ideals contribute to a stigmatising food environment in which social media influencers (SMIs) strongly shape perceptions of what counts as a 'Работает' diet. However, little is known about the specific food content that emerging adults encounter in their own social media feeds and how this influences their understanding of healthy eating. Guided by Source Credibility Theory and Expectancy-Value Theory, this study used a photo-voice approach combining content analysis and focu

Nutritional, antinutritional, and heavy metal profiles of ethnopoultry botanicals in Central Uganda.

In Central Uganda, smallholder farmers rely on indigenous ethnoveterinary botanicals as phytogenic feed additives (PFAs) for indigenous chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus). However, the balance between their nutritional benefits and toxicological risks remains poorly characterized. Following an ethnoveterinary survey in Najjembe sub-county where Capsicum frutescens (ranked 2nd ), Cannabis sativa (3rd ), and Nicotiana tabacum (4th) were prioritized by farmers, this study investigated their nutritional and safety profiles. Aloe vera (1st ) was excluded from analysis due to extensive prior docume

Validation and comparison of standard addition methods without and with stable-isotope dilution for LC-MS/MS determination of cortisol and melatonin in ballan wrasse (Labrus bergylta) larvae using liquid-liquid extraction.

Cleaner fish are widely used as a biological measure for controlling salmon lice in aquaculture. However, their production is frequently affected by developmental and physiological disorders, many of which may be associated with stress responses induced by husbandry-related factors. Analysis of stress-related hormones, such as cortisol and melatonin, in larval head and body tissues can therefore provide biochemical insight into the mechanisms underlying these production challenges. In this study, a simple two-solvent liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) and two standard addition approaches, without

Enhanced CO2 gasification of polyethylene terephthalate using a two-stage gasification process to produce CO-rich and tar-deficient syngas.

This study demonstrates that a two-stage gasification process consisting of a fluidized bed gasifier followed by a tar-cracking reactor packed with activated carbon enables stable and efficient CO2 gasification of polyethylene terephthalate. Conventional fluidized-bed CO2 gasification typically suffers from low CO2 conversion due to limited gas-solid residence time and the inherently low reactivity of CO2. In contrast, the present two-stage configuration significantly enhances CO2 utilization by first fixing polyethylene terephthalate-derived tar on activated carbon and subsequently promoting

Anopheles mosquitoes exposed to long-acting antimalarials via drug-supplemented bloodmeal absorb drug but do not suffer fitness costs.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization's recommendations for antimalarial chemoprevention and mass treatment use in endemic areas have greatly expanded, allowing more flexibility in demographic groups and regions targeted. An overlooked aspect of expanding human population-level drug exposure is the downstream impact of drug on the vector. Anopheles mosquitoes re-feed often with ≥4 bloodmeals during their lifespan. This provides repeated opportunities for mosquitoes to ingest drug via bloodmeals taken from people with antimalarials in the bloodstream and raises questions as to drug impact o

Pharmacokinetics, Optimal Dosages, and Withdrawal Time of Florfenicol in Cobia (Rachycentron canadum) After Oral Administration via Medicated Feed.

Antimicrobial drugs are commonly used for the treatment of bacterial diseases in cobia (Rachycentron canadum), but information regarding the rationale of their therapeutic use, such as pharmacokinetics (PK), optimal dosages, and withdrawal time (WDT) in this species is very rare. The present study evaluated the PK characteristics of florfenicol (FF) in cobia at 25°C after a single oral administration of 10 mg/kg via medicated feed. FF in the serum was determined by an HPLC method and the PK parameters were analyzed by a one-compartmental model. In tissue depletion and drug WDT study, cobia wer

Feasibility of neonatal intravenous nutrition for the management of gastroschisis in sub-Saharan Africa.

INTRODUCTION: Parenteral nutrition (PN) is a life-saving intervention for neonates with gastroschisis. As most low and middle-income countries lack access to comprehensive neonatal PN, we evaluated the feasibility and safety of a pragmatic intravenous nutrition strategy for neonates with gastroschisis in sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS: Local protocols for partial parenteral nutritional support and early enteral feeding were developed across the seven pediatric surgery centers participating in the Gastroschisis Interventional Study (n=192). Protocols aimed to provide up to 100 kcal/kg/day using 1

Perturbations in Dairy Cows: Impact of Heat Stress, Lameness, and Mastitis on Milk Yield and Feeding Behavior.

Dairy cows typically respond to stressors by altering their behavior, such as reducing eating time (ET) and rumination time (RT). Although declines in milk yield (MY) have been extensively studied, models to quantify perturbations in ET and RT are still lacking. This study adopts a smoothing approach to identify and characterize perturbations in MY, ET, and RT in response to the main primary stressors, heat stress (HS), lameness (L), and mastitis (M), while evaluating the influences of parity and stage of lactation. A total of 350 Italian Simmental cows were monitored in farms equipped with au
