Anorexia Nervosa and First-Person Perspective: Altruism, Family System, and Body Experience.

Based on the case study of Jeanne, the objective of this article is to study patterns of specific subjectivity in anorexic subjects. We seek to identify, in a first-person perspective, the core vulnerability features of anorexic existence, beyond the dimension of food alone. The identification of a psychopathological structure results in a better understanding of Jeanne's clinical situation and helps formulate psychotherapeutic and prophylactic recommendations. We suggest that so-called "denial" is a psychological mechanism that should be reconsidered. Denial is not a mechanism pertaining to a

Neurotoxic Non-proteinogenic Amino Acid β-N-Methylamino-L-alanine and Its Role in Biological Systems.

Secondary metabolites of photoautotrophic organisms have attracted considerable interest in recent years. In particular, molecules of non-proteinogenic amino acids participating in various physiological processes and capable of producing adverse ecological effects have been actively investigated. For example, the non-proteinogenic amino acid β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) is neurotoxic to animals including humans. It is known that BMAA accumulation via the food chain can lead to development of neurodegenerative diseases in humans such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases as well as amyotr

Formation of melatonin and its isomer during bread dough fermentation and effect of baking.

Melatonin is produced mainly by the pineal gland in vertebrates. Also, melatonin and its isomer are found in foods. Investigating the formation of melatonin and its isomer is of importance during bread dough fermentation and its degradation during baking since bread is widely consumed in high amounts. Formation of melatonin was not significant during dough fermentation. The melatonin isomer content of nonfermented dough was found to be 4.02 ng/g and increased up to 16.71 ng/g during fermentation. Lower amounts of isomer in crumb and crust than dough showed that the thermal process caused a rem

A review: treatment of Alzheimer's disease discovered in repurposed agents.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Many compounds that have already been approved for alternate diagnoses have been studied in relation to Alzheimer's disease (AD). The purpose of this review is to summarize these studies and discuss the rationale and benefits of repurposing drugs for AD treatment. METHODS: Studies of drugs related to AD treatment that were relevant to a disease-modifying mechanism of action (MOA) and are already approved by the Food and Drug Administration for non-AD diagnoses were collected from PubMed. RESULTS: Many drugs already approved for the treatment of other diseases have been studi

Vitamin B6: deficiency diseases and methods of analysis.

Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is closely associated with the functions of the nervous, immune and endocrine systems. It also participates in the metabolic processes of proteins, lipids and carbohydrates. Pyridoxine deficiency may result in neurological disorders including convulsions and epileptic encephalopathy and may lead to infant abnormalities. The Intravenous administration of pyridoxine to patients results in a dramatic cessation of seizures. A number of analytical methods were developed for the determination of pyridoxine in different dosage forms, food materials and biological fluids. These

The FDA and designing clinical trials for chronic cutaneous ulcers.

Treatment of chronic wounds can present a challenge, with many patients remaining refractory to available advanced therapies. As such, there is a strong need for the development of new products. Unfortunately, despite this demand, few new wound-related drugs have been approved over the past decade. This is in part due to unsuccessful clinical trials and subsequent lack of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval. In this article, we discuss the FDA approval process, how it relates to chronic wound trials, common issues that arise, and how best to manage them. Additionally, problems encounte

Microalgae as sources of carotenoids.

Marine microalgae constitute a natural source of a variety of drugs for pharmaceutical, food and cosmetic applications-which encompass carotenoids, among others. A growing body of experimental evidence has confirmed that these compounds can play important roles in prevention (and even treatment) of human diseases and health conditions, e.g., cancer, cardiovascular problems, atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, muscular dystrophy, cataracts and some neurological disorders. The underlying features that may account for such favorable biological activities are their intrinsic antioxidant, anti-i

Gluten tolerance; potential challenges in treatment strategies.

Tolerable gluten thresholds in gluten free products have long been debated together with issues of cross contamination of gluten free cereals during the milling process. It is well established that a totally gluten free diet is virtually impossible owing to the presence of traces of gluten. It is estimated that daily consumption of gluten from contaminated gluten free foods is in the range of 5 to 50 mg. We believe evidence is mounting that it may be possible for some coeliac patients to tolerate gluten above the limits considered permissible at threshold levels. Conversely, it seems there is

Towards automated ingestion detection: swallow sounds.

Obesity is a worldwide epidemic and is a cause of many major chronic diseases. In most cases, obesity is a result of an imbalance between food intake and calories burned. Steps toward automated ingestion detection are being made. In order to automate the process of capturing ingestion, a method for detecting, analyzing, and recording sounds related to ingestion is being developed. In this paper, preliminary swallow sound analysis is presented and compared with various other noises captured from a throat mounted microphone. Initial frequency analysis indicates a stronger presence at high freque

The role of natriuretic peptides in heart failure.

Heart failure is a clinical syndrome associated with progressive cardiac, vascular, and renal dysfunction. Regardless of the initial injury, investigations have demonstrated that neurohormones play an important role in the complex multiorgan and cellular adaptations. Natriuretic peptides play a key role in this process, antagonizing the actions of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, thus promoting vasodilatation and natriuresis. Other important physiologic properties of the natriuretic peptides are prolusitropic, sympathoinhibitory, antiproliferative, anti-ischemic, anti-inflammatory, an

[Hyperhomocysteinemia. A new coronary risk factor].

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality in Mexico, as well as in other Western countries. Conventional risk factors for atherosclerosis, such as cigarette smoking, systemic hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and hypercholesterolemia, do not explain this association completely. Recently, it has been recognized that hyperhomocysteinemia contributes to the atherosclerotic process, promoting endothelial damage and oxidative stress in the vascular wall. Homocysteine, an amino acid generated under physiologic conditions after ingestion of protein-rich foods, is used in a variety of me

Infectious disease emergencies in primary care.

Infectious disease emergencies can be described as infectious processes that, if not recognized and treated immediately, can lead to significant morbidity or mortality. These emergencies can present as common or benign infections, fooling the primary care provider into using more conservative treatment strategies than are required. This review discusses the pathophysiology, history and physical findings, diagnostic criteria, and treatment strategies for the following infectious disease emergencies: acute bacterial meningitis, ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, meningococcemia, necroti

The nature and implication of intestinal endocrine cell changes in coeliac disease.

Coeliac disease is associated with intestinal lesion. This lesion causes architectural derangement of the mucosa in the form of villus atrophy, increased crypt length and increased volume of the lamina propria. Several changes in the intestinal endocrine cells have been reported over the years, e.g. the number of secretin cells and increased numbers of GIP, CCK/gastrin, motilin, and serotonin cells. There is no consensus about the nature of the changes in somatostatin-cells. It has been postulated that the changes in the endocrine cells are a selective process to meet the new demands exerted b

Nutrition: an issue of concern for children with disabilities.

Children with special health care needs should be identified as early as possible. Nutritionists, educators, therapists, parents, primary care clinicians, should serve as interdisciplinary advocates for these children by planning through conversations, meetings, and individualized educational plan objectives to secure any needed services. Intervention services also can involve specialized techniques such as food preparation, stimulation of the eating process, and monitoring of specialized feedings (e.g., gastrostomy tubes). Intervention with children exhibiting special health needs should be i

Rotating objects to recognize them: A case study on the role of viewpoint dependency in the recognition of three-dimensional objects.

Successful object recognition is essential for finding food, identifying kin, and avoiding danger, as well as many other adaptive behaviors. To accomplish this feat, the visual system must reconstruct 3-D interpretations from 2-D "snapshots" falling on the retina. Theories of recognition address this process by focusing on the question of how object representations are encoded with respect to viewpoint. Although empirical evidence has been equivocal on this question, a growing body of surprising results, including those obtained in the experiments presented in this case study, indicates that r

[Use of a fermented powdered milk in malnourished or lactose intolerant children].

Lactase deficient subjects, who form the bulk of the world population, absorb yogurt lactose because the bacteria used for fermentation produce beta-galactosidase. From a milk fermented by these bacteria and dried by a temperature-controlled process a power could be obtained which possess residual lactase activity but, unlike yogurt, does not need storage at low temperature. The lactose of this fermented powdered milk is perfectly absorbed, as proved by hydrogen respiratory tests performed in 35 lactose intolerant African subjects living in isolated villages. In 25 malnourished children under

The fate of ethylenebis(dithiocarbamate) fungicides during processing of contaminated apples.

A spectrophotometric method based on the liberation of carbon disulfide is suitable for the determination of ethylenebis(dithiocarbamate) (EBDC) residues on apples. Homogenization of samples before analysis initiates rapid breakdown of EBDC, resulting in low recoveries. Thermal conversion of mancozeb to ethylenethiourea (ETU) in the course of apple processing was investigated. The formation of ETU from EBDC could be reduced by lowering the pH value. The presence of an antioxidant (ascorbic acid or cysteine) significantly diminished the yields of ETU after heating, but they inhibited its subseq

Lipid keratopathy in rabbits. An animal model system.

Rabbits rendered hypercholesterolemic on a high cholesterol diet while subjected to corneal suture placement to induce neovascularization made useful models for qualitatively and quantitatively studying lipid keratopathy. Forty rabbit eyes were subjected to placement of four sutures located between 1 and 4 mm from the limbus. The neovasculature grew at a constant rate of 0.24 mm/day, unaffected by serum cholesterol levels. Rabbits fed cholesterol prior to surgery were the earliest to display lipid keratopathy, followed by those who began cholesterol feedings on the day of surgery, and last by

[Proteolytic enzymes: potential allergens for the skin and respiratory tract?].

Proteolytic enzymes of animal, bacterial, mould or plant origin are used in many industrial processes, e.g. in the detergent, food and pharmaceutical industries as well as in medicine. The allergenic potency of these enzymes should not be underestimated, for they cause, in particular, IgE-mediated respiratory allergies. The risk of sensitization to enzymes due to inhalation as a result of occupational exposure is very high (up to 50%), and therapeutic applications are also not without risk. Therefore, the utmost care should be taken in the production and handling of pulverized enzymes and thei
