Keratectasias including keratoconus are pathological curvature anomalies of the human cornea, which can progress and lead to permanent visual impairment. Corneal crosslinking can be used to stabilize the disease. Radical cystectomy is not a suitable option for every patient with muscle-invasive bladder cancer. Whereas radiotherapy (in combination with radio-sensitizing chemotherapy) is mentioned as an alternative in the current German S3 guideline, numbers are low in Germany compared to other countries. We try here to sum up the current evidence and data, especially regarding the definition of on optimal patient population to profit from this kind of therapy. Furthermore, we take a look at the role of cystectomy in the age of modern tumour therapy.

In February 2025, public health agencies in Germany and the United Kingdom (UK) reported four cases of domestically acquired cholera caused by consumption of holy water imported from Ethiopia, and a further three cases in travellers to Ethiopia. Multidrug-resistant Vibrio cholerae O1, linked to recent outbreaks in Eastern and Middle Africa, was detected in clinical specimens and the holy water. In cholera-endemic regions, visitors should drink potable water and should not bring bottled water back from their travels.

Azole resistance in Aspergillus fumigatus is an emerging public health concern. Recently, a novel fungicide-driven mutation in the cyp51A gene and its promoter, TR46/Y121F/T289A, leading to high-level resistance to voriconazole has been identified in The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Tanzania, and India in both clinical and environmental samples. Here we report the first description of A. fumigatus carrying this mutation in France, in a cystic fibrosis patient, underlining the need for extensive monitoring of Aspergillus resistance.

In addition to the main indications pertaining to 95 % of all patients receiving liver transplantation in Germany, there are numerous other diseases that may become clinically evident in the adult age and may lead to the decision for liver transplantation. These may be metabolic diseases with their main defect located in the liver, malformations of liver cells, hepatic vascular diseases and rare tumours of the liver. Standard exceptions for the listing are in place only for a limited number of diseases. Exact diagnostics and the point in time for transplantation are crucial for the prognosis.

Toxic epidermal necrolysis and Stevens-Johnson syndrome are potentially life-threatening skin disorders. We report that a 3-month-old infant, a patient with toxic epidermal necrolysis, who in addition to a standard resuscitation protocol for burns received treatment with Suprathel (PolyMedics Innovations GmbH, Filderstadt, Germany) and fatty gauze as topical wound dressings in the form of a whole body cover with complete recovery. This is the first case report of Suprathel being used successfully in a baby with toxic epidermal necrolysis.

Three Sumatran tigers (Panthera tigris sumatrae) at the Heidelberg Zoo in Germany presented with severe neurologic signs. Physical examination and diagnostic tests did not reveal a definitive diagnosis. Two days after initial presenting signs, all of the animals appeared clinically normal. An investigation into this outbreak revealed that all animals received horse meat on the evening before the incident. A toxicologic examination was initiated and serum analysis of the affected female tiger cub and the horse meat revealed contamination with pentobarbital.

Until recently simultaneous bilateral laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) was regarded as contraindicated in Germany. However, the procedure was sporadically performed, because it offers patient comfort and is more cost effective than sequential LASIK. Even though the complication rate is below the calculated rate of 0.01%, bilateral complications may have catastrophic effects on the patient. In addition, there is the theoretical disadvantage that the results from the first eye cannot be used for the second eye. However, this effect has yet to be clinically proven.

A case of congenital malaria due to Plasmodium malariae in one of two living Greek twins born in Germany is presented. In the child fever, anaemia and hepatosplenomegaly were first noticed at the age of two months. Plasmodium malariae parasites were demonstrated in the peripheral blood and bone marrow. The sera of mother and infant contained malaria antibodies. However the mother never showed clinical signs of malaria. Diagnosis and therapy of congenital malaria and the possible mode of transmission of this rare disease are discussed.

The screening method of so-called bacterial inhibition and growth assay (Guthrie-test) is described and the number of newborn babies tested over the whole of West Germany from 1969--1974 is stated. 626 cases of PKU were detected early and tested after these dates. Only a few german laboratories are able to detect other inborn errors of metabolism such as MSUD (maple syrup urine disease), homocystinuria, histidinemia and galactosemia. The ratio of illnesses therefore can only be estimated and not stated with statistical evidence.

Among 305 children with leukemia, between one and fourteen years old, authors found 8 and in a comparative group ("individual matched pairs") 40 children with removed tonsils. The difference (2.62% tonsillectomized children in the leukemia-group, 13.11% in the comparative group) is highly significant.
