Alphafetoprotein (AFP) production was investigated clinically and histologically in cases of congenital biliary atresia and neonatal hepatitis. While serum AFP levels were all higher than 16,000 ng/ml in seven patients with neonatal hepatitis, they were less than 10,000 ng/ml in 50 per cent of 12 patients with biliary atresia. The authors have observed 5 cases of cholestatic jaundice with cytolysis during treatment with amineptine, a new tricyclic compound recently made available. The responsibility of the drug was virtually certain for the following reasons: (a) there was no other cause of jaundice, such as viral infection, gallstones, toxic agents or association with other hepatotoxic drugs; (b) clinical and biochemical findings were similar in all patients; (c) in 2 patients, reintroduction of the drug after temporary withdrawal resulted in rapid recurrence of the condition, with the same symptoms and course. Four patients, aged 17 to 25 years, obtained lead and opium pills which had been stolen from retail pharmacists. They crushed them, suspended them in water an injected them intravenously. They developed general malaise, vomiting and constipation, and blood tests several weeks after injection of the pills showed raised alkaline phosphatase and aspartate transaminases. Chronic active hepatitis was diagnosed in five American Foxhounds from one kennel. Spirochetes were demonstrated in the liver in four of the dogs. A rising titer to Leptospira interrogans serovar grippotyphosa was found in the fifth dog, although spirochetes were not demonstrated in tissues. A serologic survey at the kennel revealed evidence of exposure of 6 of 13 dogs to grippotyphosa. This is the first report of an association between chronic active hepatitis leptospiral infection in any species.

Sera of 184 patients were examined to determine the incidence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). Ninety-two patients had primary liver cancer (PLC) and there were 92 matched controls. Thirty-one of the 92 patients with PLC and 8 of the 92 patients with no clinical evidence of liver disease had radio-immunoassay-positive tests for HBsAg. The difference was significant (P less than 0,01). In 56 of the patients with PLC it was possible to assess the nature of associated liver disease histologically.
