The CT colonography radiology and data system: history, updates, and future directions.

Computed tomography colonography, also known as virtual colonoscopy, is a minimally invasive imaging technique developed in the early 1990s to evaluate the colon for polyps, cancer, and other abnormalities. Advances in multidetector computed tomography, bowel preparation protocols, and three-dimensional reconstruction rapidly improved diagnostic performance. Landmark trials demonstrating sensitivity for clinically significant adenomas comparable to optical colonoscopy led to its acceptance as a colorectal cancer screening option. Standardized reporting further accelerated clinical uptake. The

Blood Relatives: Linking Evolutionary History and Conservation of Medicinal Leeches (Hirudo spp.).

Medicinal leeches of the genus Hirudo are both historically important in medicine and increasingly studied as models in ecology and biomedicine. However, the taxonomy, population structure and evolutionary history of this genus remain partially unresolved. Here, we present the most comprehensive phylogenetic analysis of the Hirudo complex to date, incorporating 350 COX1 sequences (103 newly generated) and 247 complete mitogenomes from across the distribution range. In Hirudo verbana, three major clades corresponding to Iberian (A), Western (B) and Eastern (C) haplogroups were found, with sub-h…

Modeling the complex smoking exposure history in assessment of pan-cancer risk.

This study used UK Biobank data from ∼500 000 participants to examine how smoking intensity and duration jointly shape the risk of 12 smokin … han those with unfavorable behaviors. Overall, our findings show that smoking pattern and cessation history meaningfully influence pan-cancer risk beyond cumulative exposure, supporting the incorporation of detailed smoking histories-intensity, duration, and cessation-into risk stratification, screening eligibility, and prevention strategies.

Radiological evaluation of the natural history of PIK3CA-related overgrowth spectrum (PROS).

PURPOSE: PIK3CA-related overgrowth spectrum (PROS) comprises a heterogeneous group of disorders caused by postzygotic activating variants in PIK3CA, leading to mosaic activation of the PI3K pathway. The natural history of PROS is highly variable and depends on the timing and distribution of the somatic mutation. To better characterize its radiological progression, we analyzed a cohort of patients with PROS. METHODS: This multicenter study was conducted at Hôpital Femme Mère Enfant (Lyon) and Hôpital Necker-Enfants Malades (Paris). Pediatric and adult patients with a confirmed PIK3CA variant a…

Association Between Type D Personality and Cardiovascular Disease History: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Type D personality, characterized by high negative affectivity and social inhibition, has been linked to poorer mental health and heightened risk for adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Although previous studies have examined associations between type D personality, psychological distress, and cardiovascular disease (CVD), many have assessed these factors independently, relied on clinical samples, or overlooked the simultaneous assessment of psychological distress and CVD history. Consequently, less is known about how type D traits relate to emotional distress and CVD history within t…

Timing of adverse childhood experiences shapes epigenetic ageing and life-history outcomes.

Early-life adversity is widely linked to accelerated biological ageing, yet it remains unclear whether such associations reflect exposure during sensitive developmental periods, the cumulative burden of exposures, or temporal proximity to later outcomes. Here, we leverage life-history theory and a life course framework to nuance how the timing of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) becomes biologically embedded through epigenetic ageing. Using longitudinal data from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study (N=1,974), we apply statistical learning and structured life course modelling t…

Palaeoproteomic insights into the evolutionary history of cave bears from southwestern Europe.

Dental enamel proteomics provides access to molecular information from time periods far beyond the reach of ancient DNA, offering a powerful means to investigate evolutionary dynamics in deep time. Here we present the first large-scale enamel proteomic dataset for 55 cave bears to date, analysing fossils spanning the Early to Late Pleistocene across southwestern Europe, including key specimens from Atapuerca sites. Using a non-enzymatic demineralization workflow and LC-MS/MS analysis we consistently recovered rich enamel proteomes and identified taxonomically informative peptides alongside two

Cancer Risk in Solid Organ Transplant Recipients With a Pretransplant Cancer History.

IMPORTANCE: Cancer survivors are at elevated risk of developing subsequent cancers. Solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients also have elevated cancer risk, but the pattern of subsequent cancer risk among SOT recipients with a pretransplant cancer has not been studied. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association of pretransplant cancers with posttransplant cancer risk among SOT recipients. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used linked data from the US Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients and 34 population-based cancer registries, comprising 92% of the US SOT recipient popu

Life History Consequences of the Prevalence of Aggressive Males Carrying Costly Weapons.

Sexually selected weapons used in intra-sexual competition for mates are among the most striking animal features, but how their evolution affects life history traits closely correlated with fitness, and hence species' evolutionary trajectories, is not well understood. Here, we selected for or against male morphs carrying a lethal weapon in a male-dimorphic mite Sancassania berlesei, and investigated how life histories evolve in populations with high vs. low proportion of weaponized, aggressive males called fighters and non-weaponized, non-aggressive males called scramblers. After 25 generation…

Life history and ecology shape global patterns in avian hatching failure rates.

BACKGROUND: Hatching failure is common in the eggs of wild birds, yet its variation in relation to ecological and life history factors remains poorly understood. Understanding these patterns is essential for explaining reproductive strategies and evolutionary trade-offs in birds. RESULTS: In a comprehensive comparative study, we found that the previously recognized latitudinal decline in avian hatching failure rates is driven by a greater proportion of eggs failing in larger clutches at lower latitudes. We suggest that this pattern could reflect higher exposure to ambient conditions in larger …

Nanostructures: Designed by nature - a brief history of Synthetic Amorphous Silica (SAS).

Synthetic Amorphous Silica (SAS) has been produced and marketed since the early 1940s and can be regarded as a nanomaterial (NM) or more precisely as a nanostructured material since the first production even though the term 'nanomaterial' was not defined back then. Early publications often use the term 'milli-micron' instead of 'nanometer'. During this long history, SAS found its way into an increasing number of applications. Nowadays it is one of the commercially most relevant NMs, which is produced on a million-ton scale worldwide. It is an essential ingredient in many everyday applications,…

Temporally extended dissipative blankets: Boundary history as a non-Markovian screening mechanism.

Biological boundaries are often modeled as instantaneous Markov blankets that separate internal and external states through sensory and active variables. However, real biological interfaces are dissipative systems with finite response times, relaxation, noise, and delayed transduction. Here, we examine whether such physical boundary dynamics can produce a non-Markovian screening relation, in which conditional separation is recovered only when boundary history is included. We constructed a minimal stochastic dissipative loop linking external, sensory, internal, and active states, with delayed s…

Trauma therapy: risks, side effects, and the forensic implications of treatment history.

Many victims of sexual violence develop trauma-related disorders, often requiring early trauma-focused psychotherapeutic treatment. Guideline-compliant treatments can effectively alleviate PTSD symptoms; the positive effects of recommended trauma-focused techniques are undisputed. Nevertheless, it is important to critically discuss potential risks. Several recent publications on effects of trauma therapy report no cause for concern, emphasising that trauma-specific treatment has no negative effects on the memories of patients who have experienced trauma. This line of reasoning overlooks the fa

The history of necrotising otitis externa: from clinical observation to conceptual recognition.

OBJECTIVES: Necrotising otitis externa is a severe, potentially life-threatening infection of the external auditory canal and skull base, first formally described by Chandler in 1968. However, historical literature suggests that its clinical features were recognised long before this, without conceptual unification. METHODS: A narrative historical review was undertaken using primary and secondary sources, including early otological texts, case reports and modern literature. RESULTS: Descriptions consistent with necrotising otitis externa appear as early as the nineteenth century, with recurre

Family history of haematological malignancy and prognosis across non-Hodgkin lymphoma subtypes.

Family history of haematological malignancy (FHHM) reflects inherited susceptibility to non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), but its prognostic significance remains poorly understood. We used a cohort study of 1994 NHL patients to evaluate associations between FHHM and clinical outcomes across lymphoma subtypes. We estimated associations, adjusted for sex and lymphoma-specific prognostic index, of self-reported FHHM in a first-degree relative with overall survival (OS), event-free survival (EFS) and lymphoma-specific survival (LSS) using multivariable Cox regression models and with failure to achieve E…
