Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) causes a highly pathogenic mosquito-borne zoonosis that is responsible for sporadic outbreaks of severe illness in humans and equines in the eastern USA. Culiseta (Cs.) melanura is the primary vector of EEEV in most geographic regions but its feeding patterns on specific avian and mammalian hosts are largely unknown in the mid-Atlantic region. The objectives of our study were to: 1) identify avian hosts of Cs. melanura and evaluate their potential role in enzootic amplification of EEEV, 2) assess spatial and temporal patterns of virus activity during a

Schistosome parasites are the causative agents of schistosomiasis, a chronically debilitating disease that affects over 200 million people globally and ranks second to malaria among parasitic diseases in terms of public health and socio-economic impact (1-4). Schistosome parasites are trematode worms with a complex life cycle interchanging between a parasitic life in molluscan and mammalian hosts with intervening free-swimming stages. Briefly, free-swimming cercariae infect a mammalian host by penetrating the skin with the aid of secreted proteases, during which time the cercariae lose their t

BACKGROUND: Pneumocystis spp. are opportunistic pathogens that cause pneumonia in immunocompromised humans and animals. Pneumocystis colonization has also been detected in immunocompetent hosts and may exacerbate other pulmonary diseases. Surfactant protein A (SP-A) is an innate host defense molecule and plays a role in the host response to Pneumocystis.
METHODS: To analyze the role of SP-A in protecting the immunocompetent host from Pneumocystis colonization, the susceptibility of immunocompetent mice deficient in SP-A (KO) and wild-type (WT) mice to P. murina colonization was analyzed by re

In this paper, the quantitative post-embryonic development of the Asian freshwater fish nematode Camallanus cotti Fujita, 1927, is described. Larval and adult morphometrics were obtained by following the parasite's life cycle experimentally using copepods Macrocyclops albidus (Jurine) as intermediate host and guppies Poecilia reticulata (Peters), southern platyfish Xiphophorus maculatus (Günther) and paradise fish Macropodus opercularis (L.) as definitive host. Additionally, adult worms were obtained from heavily infected paradise fish imported from Singapore. It is suggested that the gradual

BACKGROUND: Strongyloides stercoralis poses a significant clinical and public health challenge not only in endemic regions but also in non-endemic regions associated with travel. Ruling out this infection is essential in immuno-compromised hosts given the high probability of reactivation and mortality.
METHODS: In this study we compared an ELISA based on two recombinant antigens in the United States with a highly sensitive and specific reference serological test.
RESULTS & CONCLUSION: There was 100% agreement between the two methods. ELISA assays based on Strongyloides stercoralis recombinan

Community-acquired pneumonia remains a common illness with substantial morbidity and mortality. Current management challenges focus on identifying the likely etiologic pathogens based on an assessment of host risk factors, while attempting to make a specific etiologic diagnosis, which is often not possible. Therapy is necessarily empiric and focuses on pneumococcus and atypical pathogens for all patients, with consideration of other pathogens based on specific patient risk factors. It is important to understand the expected response to effective therapy, and to identify and manage clinical fai

The available evidence suggests that plasma leakage in dengue hemorrhagic fever is caused by the action of circulating mediators on the vascular endothelium, and that the host immune response is a critical determinant of this response. We have been exploring the role of dengue virus-specific T lymphocytes in the immunopathogenesis of plasma leakage. Memory dengue virus-specific T cells induced during a primary dengue virus infection are reactivated by the heterologous viral serotype during a secondary infection to expand to high levels and produce a skewed cytokine profile. Investigations are

The level of Epstein-Barr (EB) virus-specific cytotoxic T cell responsiveness was measured in 21 patients with active, progressive rheumatoid arthritis (RA). A significant number (8 out of 20) of EB virus sero-positive patients showed a markedly impaired responsiveness when compared with a control group of healthy individuals. Serological responses of the RA patients to EB virus antigens were not significantly different from the control group. The defect in EB virus-specific cellular immunity shown by these results is of interest in the light of previous evidence of an alteration in the virus-

Viral infections can leave latent genomes, persistent reservoirs, or prolonged host responses after the presenting illness has resolved. This Review organizes their relevance to adult cognition around three overlapping infection-state prototypes: latency with episodic reactivation, chronic persistence, and acute infection with post-acute host responses. We examine how local antiviral surveillance, antigen-driven T-cell dysfunction, innate immune memory, and inflammatory resolution shape neurovascular and glial responses. Complement-mediated synaptic remodeling, proteostatic disruption, and imm

Klebsiella pneumoniae has persisted for decades as a major global health threat. Although vaccination is widely recognized as the most effective preventive strategy, no vaccine has been commercialized despite more than 50 years of intensive research. While numerous computational studies have screened epitopes from over 25 different Klebsiella protein antigens, none have progressed to vaccine development, underscoring the urgent need for innovative approaches to define the immunological signatures of this pathogen. In this study, infections caused by classical K. pneumoniae (cKp) at distinct an

Many insects elicit development of unique organs in their host plants called galls while feeding or ovipositing. Galls are organ-like entities that protect against biotic and abiotic stresses and provide a specialized nutrition supply. The signals used by gall-forming insects to elicit and shape galls are unknown, but phytohormones, peptides, small RNAs and arabinogalactan proteins are leading candidates. These four signal categories may work together to elicit galls and guide their development, but evidence of their transfer from insect to plant is incomplete. Galls vary in complexity from si

Aqueous zinc-iodine batteries (AZIBs) have attracted increasing attention due to their high safety, high theoretical capacity and fast iodine redox kinetics. However, the dissolution and shuttle of polyiodides (I3 - and I5 -) in aqueous electrolytes still lead to poor cycling stability and slow iodine conversion kinetics. In this study, we synthesized a protonated porphyrin-based conjugated microporous polymer (p-por-CMP) and utilized it as an iodine-hosting cathode material (I2@p-por-CMP) for AZIBs. The protonation strategy regulates the local electronic structure and induces charge redistrib

Maintaining group integrity by excluding outsiders and pathogens is a fundamental requirement and challenge of social living. In social insects, these defences rely heavily on chemical communication, with cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) mediating both nestmate recognition and infection-related social responses. In ants, CHCs are stored and homogenized in the pharyngeal gland, contributing to the formation of a shared colony odour that enables nestmate recognition. We investigated the behavioural and chemical responses of the clonal raider ant Ooceraea biroi to infections by the nematode Diplosca

The specific recognition between a virus and a cell receptor is the initial step of viral invasion, profoundly influencing the virus's host range and pathogenicity, and it is a critical aspect of understanding and controlling viral diseases in fish. This review systematically summarizes the research progress on receptors for major fish RNA viruses and DNA viruses. It reveals the sophisticated strategies viruses have evolved to utilize a variety of host molecules (such as fibronectin, LamR, Nectin, HSP proteins, VDAC2/RACK1, etc.) as receptors. Concurrently, it has been found that different vir

Avian influenza H7 viruses pose a significant zoonotic and pandemic threat, yet their evolutionary dynamics, spatial transmission patterns, and host-specific roles remain underexplored. This study integrates phylodynamic and phylogeographic analyses to map global H7 dissemination, quantify host-specific contributions, and identify key ecological and anthropogenic drivers. Epidemiological data show key epidemic waves in Asia during 2013-2014 and 2016-2017, and in Africa in 2023. The Eurasian and American lineages of H7 viruses exhibit transmission with a median velocity of ~661 km/year and ~354

Twenty-two herpesviruses, all within the family Orthoherpesviridae and belonging to the Alphaherpesvirinae (n = 3) and Gammaherpesvirinae (n = 19) subfamilies have been reported in 14 different pinniped species (n = 8 phocids, n = 5 otariids and n = 1 odobenid). This review critically assessed the purported pathology reported for herpesvirus infections and found a variety of lesions present dependent on both the herpesvirus and host species. Lesions included hepatic and adrenal necrosis, interstitial pneumonia, thyroid atrophy, lymphodepletion, lymphocytolysis, ulcerative stomatitis, glossitis

Given its global distribution and high transmissibility in the environment, Candida auris poses a serious threat to global public health. However, the underlying mechanisms of its adaptive strategies remain poorly understood. Here we delineate the pan-genome structures of 1,306 representative C. auris isolates collected from 28 countries. In addition to the clade-related genetic diversity and highly variable pan-genomes, we identify the key regulatory modules and genes specific to C. auris in response to 32 different host microenvironment-mimicking stresses. Through comparative analysis with e

Malignant Catarrhal Fever (MCF) is caused by a group of gammaherpesviruses in the genus Macavirus. The virus is transmitted via nasal shedding from adapted hosts, such as sheep, which do not develop the disease, to non-adapted hosts such as cattle, pigs, bison, and deer, which can develop an often-fatal form of the disease. There is currently no specific treatment or vaccine available to control MCF, and the resulting losses significantly affect livestock industries worldwide. To assess the seroprevalence of MCF in southern Brazil, blood samples were collected from sheep and cattle reared simu

The Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) is a single-stranded, segmented RNA virus belonging to the Nairoviridae family, and it is rapidly expanding across Africa, Asia, and southern Europe, probably favored by climate change and livestock trade. Its fatality rate in humans reaches up to 40%, and there is currently no specific treatment or vaccine available. Therefore, the development of therapies against CCHFV is essential, and their design requires understanding of the molecular evolution and genetic distribution of the virus. Motivated by these concerns, we present a comprehensive

Tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), remains a global health challenge. The human-adapted TB-causing bacteria are distributed into ten lineages with distinct global distributions and clinical outcomes. Mtb lineages 4 (L4) and L6 are good prototypes of these differences, because L4 is globally prevalent, whereas L6 is geographically restricted to West Africa and associated with slower disease progression. Given the fundamental role of T cells for the control of TB, we questioned whether Mtb L4 or L6 antigens and HLA interactions would be disrupted in West African hosts
