Epidemiological and spatial characteristics of interpersonal physical violence in a Brazilian city: A comparative study of violent injury hotspots in familial versus non-familial settings, 2012-2014.

This study explores both epidemiological and spatial characteristics of domestic and community interpersonal violence. We evaluated three years of violent trauma data in the medium-sized city of Campina Grande in North-Eastern Brazil. 3559 medical and police records were analysed and 2563 cases were included to identify socioeconomic and geographic patterns. The associations between sociodemographic, temporal, and incident characteristics and domestic violence were evaluated using logistic regression. Using Geographical Information Systems (GIS), we mapped victims' household addresses to ident

Unhealthy lifestyle may increase later depression via inflammation in older women but not men.

Depression and inflammatory markers have a reliable cross-sectional association although less is known about the prospective relationship. The current study investigated whether pro-inflammatory markers are prospectively associated with depression, and whether indicators of unhealthy lifestyle, physical health and psychosocial functioning may drive this association. Participants were drawn from the Hunter Community Study, a community-dwelling cohort of individuals aged 55-85 years (N = 1410). Participants completed baseline physiological assessment, health-related questionnaires, and blood sam

Investigating the important correlates of maternal education and childhood malaria infections.

The relationship between maternal education and child health has intrigued researchers for decades. This study explored the interaction between maternal education and childhood malaria infection. Cross-sectional survey data from three African countries were used. Descriptive analysis and multivariate logistic regression models were completed in line with identified correlates. Marginal effects and Oaxaca decomposition analysis on maternal education and childhood malaria infection were also estimated. Children with mothers whose education level was beyond primary school were 4.7% less likely to

Indoor social networks in a South African township: potential contribution of location to tuberculosis transmission.

BACKGROUND: We hypothesized that in South Africa, with a generalized tuberculosis (TB) epidemic, TB infection is predominantly acquired indoors and transmission potential is determined by the number and duration of social contacts made in locations that are conducive to TB transmission. We therefore quantified time spent and contacts met in indoor locations and public transport by residents of a South African township with a very high TB burden. METHODS: A diary-based community social mixing survey was performed in 2010. Randomly selected participants (n = 571) prospectively recorded numbers

Categorisation of female germline stem cells based on their morphology and marker expression profiles.

In 2004, researchers found a population of mitotically active germ stem cells in adult mice capable of differentiating into oocyte-like cells, which, by contradicting the long-existing dogma on the non-existence of postnatal oogenesis, caused a shift in fertility research. Further studies conducted in mice, human and other species have continuously confirmed the existence of these female germline stem cells. Given that these cells represent an extremely small portion of the total ovarian cell population, their isolation has been exceptionally challenging, with some studies being unable to iden

Redistribution of continuous airway exposure risk in polluted environments with high- to ultra-high-density dust particles: From nostrils to terminal bronchioles.

Dust particles are typical environmental pollutants. However, the characteristics of airway transportation and deposition of high/ultra-high-density dust remain understudied. In this study, a high-fidelity continuous airway model was constructed from the nostrils to the fine bronchiole ends based on real medical images. The deposition evolution and exposure risk redistribution of high- to ultra-high-density particles of various sizes were then investigated. The results demonstrated that: Particle size determined the spatial deposition pattern, while the deposition center migrated upward with i

Spatial single-cell landscape of tumor-associated macrophages and their crosstalk with the tumor microenvironment.

Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) constitute a critical immune cell population within the tumor microenvironment (TME) and exhibit high functional heterogeneity. In this study, a pan-cancer atlas comprising 28 TAM subtypes was systematically constructed by integrating single-cell transcriptomic and spatial transcriptomic data from 291 human samples across 16 cancer types. The biological characteristics and spatial distribution patterns of these subtypes within the TME as well as the interaction mechanisms between TAMs and TME components closely associated with tumor progression were elucidat

Reprogramming of nitrogen metabolism in tumors: mechanisms and therapeutic implications.

Nitrogen metabolism plays a key role in maintaining normal physiological functions of the organism and cell proliferation and differentiation. Nitrogen metabolism in normal human body maintains a dynamic balance to meet the body's demand for synthesis of biological macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids. However, in the process of tumor development, the nitrogen metabolism of tumor cells is reprogrammed to meet the demand of rapid proliferation, showing significantly different metabolic characteristics from normal cells. Key enzymes in the tumor microenvironment affect nitrogen meta

Typical and atypical clinical profiles in syphilis patients: will genotyping of syphilis agents and patients help to explain symptom differences?

INTRODUCTION: Syphilis, caused by Treponema pallidum subsp. pallidum, is a chronic sexually transmitted infection resulting in a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations showing a rising incidence at the global level. A high proportion of syphilis patients have atypical manifestations that may complicate clinical recognition and lead to diagnostic uncertainty and delays in treatment, thereby increasing the risk of syphilis transmission. AREAS COVERED: We performed bibliographical searches of online databases to provide an overview of the clinical profiles observed in patients with syphilis.

Ferulic Acid as an Anti-Inflammatory Agent: Insights into Molecular Mechanisms, Pharmacokinetics and Applications.

Ferulic acid (FA), a hydroxycinnamic acid derivative, is a key bioactive component in traditional medicinal plants including Angelica sinensis and Asafoetida. Accumulating evidence supports its therapeutic efficacy in inflammatory disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and ulcerative colitis (UC). FA exerts anti-inflammatory effects through (1) the regulation of inflammatory cytokine levels; (2) modulation of signaling pathways such as nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), and janus kinase/signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK/STAT); (3)

Biphasic Adaptations of Gastric Epithelial Cells in Chronic H. pylori Infection from Stress to Tolerance.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a well-known pathogen associated with chronic gastric infection, progressing from gastritis to gastric adenocarcinoma, but the dynamic phenotypic and molecular characteristics of gastric epithelial cells during sustained infection remain unclear. We established a chronic infection model using the human gastric epithelial cell line GES-1, exposed to H. pylori or its lysate across 30 generations, dynamically assessing cell proliferation, migration, invasion, apoptosis, autophagy, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) markers, with RNA sequencing for trans

The Effect of Carbodiimide Crosslinkers on Gelatin Hydrogel as a Potential Biomaterial for Gingival Tissue Regeneration.

Connective tissue grafts for gingival recession treatment present significant challenges as they require an additional surgical site, leading to increased morbidity, extended operative times, and a more painful postoperative recovery for patients. Gelatin contains the arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) sequence, which supports cell adhesion and interactions. The development of gelatin hydrogels holds significant promise due to their biocompatibility, ease of customization, and structural resemblance to the extracellular matrix, making them a potential candidate for gingival regeneration. Tunable anti-ambipolar vertical bilayer organic electrochemical transistor enable neuromorphic retinal pathway.

Increasing demand for bio-interfaced human-machine interfaces propels the development of organic neuromorphic electronics with small form factors leveraging both ionic and electronic processes. Ion-based organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) showing anti-ambipolarity (OFF-ON-OFF states) reduce the complexity and size of bio-realistic Hodgkin-Huxley(HH) spiking circuits and logic circuits. However, limited stable anti-ambipolar organic materials prevent the design of integrated, tunable, and multifunctional neuromorphic and logic-based systems. In this work, a general approach for tuning
