A discussion of the known fossil tabanids (Diptera Tabanidae) is presented based on fossil evidence. This includes the origin of the hemathophagy in the Brachycera, more specifically for tabanids. Several tabanid species in the extant fauna are vectors for disease-producing organisms that affect humans and animals. Bacteria, viruses, rickettsiae, protozoa, and filarial worms can be transmitted by them, causing such diseases as anthrax, tularemia, anaplasmosis, various forms of trypanosomiasis, Q fever, and filariasis. However, if tabanids are directly responsible for all of these diseases is n

The advent of human round spermatid microinjection (ROSI) into oocytes as a treatment for severe male infertility raises the question of whether spermatids have undergone all of the maturation processes necessary for normal development. It is particularly important to know whether spermatids have undergone correct genomic imprinting, which results in the parent-of-origin-specific expression of only one allele of a gene. We assessed the imprinting status of three maternally and three paternally expressed genes in interspecific hybrid embryos generated by injecting Mus castaneus spermatids into

Manganese is an essential trace element that is required for the activity of several enzymes. Manganese is also quite toxic when ingested in large amounts, such as the inhalation of Mn-laden dust by miners. This review examines Mn intake by way of the food supply and poses the question: Is there reason to be concerned with Mn toxicity or deficiency in free-living populations in North America? Although much remains to be learned of the functions of Mn, at present there are only a few vaguely described cases of Mn deficiency in the medical literature. Given the heterogeneity of the North America

A mathematical model is proposed to analyze the effects of acquired immunity on the transmission of schistosomiasis in the human host. From this model the prevalence curve dependent on four parameters can be obtained. These parameters were estimated fitting the data by the maximum likelihood method. The model showed a good retrieving capacity of real data from two endemic areas of schistosomiasis: Touros, Brazil (Schistosoma mansoni) and Misungwi, Tanzania (S. haematobium). Also, the average worm burden per person and the dispersion of parasite per person in the community can be obtained from

The human hookworm Necator americanus appears to have evolved a number of complementary strategies to overcome the host's haemostatic processes. These include the inhibition of blood coagulation, platelet aggregation and mediator release, and the secretion of fibrinogenolytic enzymes. These strategies presumably allow the parasite to establish the chronic infections so often documented in human populations.

Zoonoses involving parasites are both common and important, some causing serious diseases. The abilities of such parasites to pass between humans and a variety of vertebrates facilitates their use as experimental model systems. Much can be learned about the host-parasite relationships of zoonotic infections from laboratory-based studies, particularly where it is possible to make use of defined parasite isolates in a variety of host species or in genetically defined strains of a given host. This review focuses on our current understanding of the immunological influences upon host-parasite inter

This article reviews the progress in the field of micromanipulation in the past year. The major event has been the wide application of intracytoplasmic sperm injection. Other advances include haploid spermatid injection and the development of successful mouse models for intracytoplasmic sperm injection. There is now increasing awareness of the genetic basis of male infertility and its possible impact on how we offer treatment.

Low density microfilaraemia (mf) is a density of circulating mf which is often undetected by standard survey techniques; it occurs naturally, after anti-filarial drug administration and after vector control. Its occurrence in human populations is closely related to the observed mf frequency distributions in them, and it is an important cause of underestimation of mf prevalence rates in epidemiological surveys. In the present paper it is defined quantitatively as a count of less than 4 mf 20 microliters-1 of capillary blood or less than 30 mf ml-1 of venous blood. Detection of low intensity tra

Beta-adrenergic agonists, when administered alone or concomitantly with methylxanthines are capable of producing lesions of myocardial necrosis and an increased incidence of cardiac arrhythmias in several species of animals. These drugs, including "beta 2-specific" agonists, also have the potential to produce adverse cardiovascular effects when used clinically. In addition, beta agonists and methylxanthines can interact to potentiate or lessen effectiveness and theoretically increase the risk to the patient. As a result, the extent to which the concomitant administration of these drugs may con

Yersinia pestis, the organism which causes plague in man and animals, circulates from host to host in nature by means of one of many flea vectors. There are about 340 mammals known to be susceptible to plague and over 30 fleas which are known to carry the organism. The habits of flea and host, usually a rodent, must to some extent coincide before infection can be established, and these habits are affected by the temperature and humidity of the environment, by vegetation cover, by season, indeed by everything that is included in the term 'landscape epidemiology'. The ease with which fleas eithe

Corins are membrane-bound protease that regulates blood pressure by activating the natriuretic peptides. These pro-atrial natriuretic peptide convertases are essential for sodium homeostasis and normal blood pressure. CORIN variants have been identified in humans and other animals, but no studies of CORIN polymorphisms have been conducted in northeastern China. This study aims to investigate the association of 2 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in CORIN (rs2271037 and rs3749585) with hypertension, as well as their potential interactions with some risk factors of hypertension in a Han pop

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is defined on the basis of developmentally inappropriate inattention, motor activity and impulsivity that emerges early in development and causes impairment in social and academic functioning. ADHD is described as a multifactorial disease, with a well studied genetic vulnerability, and early environmental factors also playing an important role in the development and course of the disorder. Current aetiological models emphasize interaction between genes and environment. The concept of attachment, as proposed by John Bowlby, reflects quality of ear

Autosomal recessive spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), the leading genetic cause of infant lethality, is caused by homozygous loss of the survival motor neuron 1 (SMN1) gene. SMA disease severity inversely correlates with the number of SMN2 copies, which in contrast to SMN1, mainly produce aberrantly spliced transcripts. Recently, the first SMA therapy based on antisense oligonucleotides correcting SMN2 splicing, namely SPINRAZATM, has been approved. Nevertheless, in type I SMA-affected individuals-representing 60% of SMA patients-the elevated SMN level may still be insufficient to restore motor n

Alkaloids, a class of low-molecular-weight nitrogenous compounds, attract a great deal of interest because of their biological activities and therapeutic potential. Yet, surprisingly little is known about their interactions with drug transporters, especially Organic Anion Transporting Polypeptide 1B1 (OATP1B1), a liver-specific uptake transporter, which is closely associated with drug-induced liver injury (DILI). This study aims to investigate the inhibitory effects of 160 alkaloids on OATP1B1, assess the hepatoprotective effects against bosentan-induced liver injury, and elucidate the structu

Trillions of bacteria inhabit the mammalian gastrointestinal tract. In the majority of hosts, these symbionts contribute largely to beneficial functions promoting microbe-host homeostasis. However, an increasing number of human diseases is associated with altered microbiota composition and enrichment of certain bacterial species. A well-known example of this is Mucispirillum schaedleri, which has been associated with inflammatory conditions in the intestine. Mucispirillum spp. belong to the phylum Deferribacteres and are prevalent but low abundant members of the rodent, pig and human microbiot

Prion diseases are associated with the conversion of cellular prion protein (PrP(C)) to an abnormal protease-resistant conformational isoform (PrP(Sc)) by template-directed conversion. The interaction between PrP(C) and PrP(Sc) is mediated by specific sites which have been mapped to six putative 'binding and conversion domains' (PrP-BCD) through peptide and antibody competition studies. Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) directed against the bityrosine motif Tyr-Tyr-Arg (YYR) specifically recognize PrP(Sc) and other misfolded PrP species. Here, we report that select bead-bound PrP-BCD mAbs induce ex
