Social engagement and attachment: a phylogenetic perspective.

This article focuses on the importance of social engagement and the behavioral and neurophysiological mechanisms that allow individuals to reduce psychological and physical distance. A model of social engagement derived from the Polyvagal Theory is presented. The model emphasizes phylogeny as an organizing principle and includes the following points: (1) there are well-defined neural circuits to support social engagement behaviors and the defensive strategies of fight, flight, and freeze; (2) these neural circuits form a phylogenetically organized hierarchy; (3) without being dependent on cons

Gender differences in sexual harassment and coercion in college students: developmental, individual, and situational determinants.

Differences in male (N = 148) and female (N = 278) college students' use of sexually harassing and coercive behaviors were investigated. Men were twice as likely to be sexually harassing and 3 times more likely to be sexually coercive as women. Among men, sexual harassment was predicted by child sexual abuse, hostility, adversarial heterosexual beliefs, and alcohol expectancy, with the latter mediating the effects of aggression. Sexual coercion was predicted by adult sexual victimization and alcohol expectancy, with alcohol expectancy again mediating the effect of aggression. Among women, sexu

Narcissists as "Victims": the role of narcissism in the perception of transgressions.

Narcissism is a set of traits that are motivated by the desire to establish and maintain a grandiose self-image. Consistent with this conceptualization, the authors hypothesized that narcissistic people perceive themselves to be the victims of other people's inter-personal transgressions more frequently than do less narcissistic people. In a 14-day diary study, the authors found that narcissism (particularly in its exploitiveness/entitlement dimension) was associated positively with the number and frequency of transgressions that respondents reported. The narcissism-victimization relationship

Subtypes for classifying adolescents with marijuana use disorders: construct validity and clinical implications.

AIMS: To evaluate the construct and predictive validity of six different subtyping classifications selected on the basis of their empirical support in the literature on adolescent substance abuse. METHODS: Typological data were collected from a heterogeneous sample of 600 adolescents presenting for marijuana treatment. The classification schemes were gender, onset age, family history, externalizing disorders, internalizing disorders and temperament. Subgroups were compared in terms of substance use frequency, substance abuse problems, social support for substance use, family conflict, school

Childhood sexual trauma and psychosocial functioning in adults with schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: This study explored the association between sexual abuse in childhood and the severity of psychosocial deficits in adults with schizophrenia. METHODS: The Quality of Life Scale, which assesses current interpersonal and work function, and the NEO personality inventory, which assesses personality dimensions relevant to social functioning, were administered to 54 individuals who had been diagnosed as having schizophrenia. Nineteen of the individuals reported having been sexually abused as children, and 35 reported no history of abuse. RESULTS: A multiple analysis of variance indicate

Impact of bipolar affective disorder on family and partners.

BACKGROUND: Successful management of major mental illness in the community relies significantly on an informal or non-professional network of caregivers. The needs and experiences of such caregivers have been little studied with respect to major chronic mood disorders. METHOD: A sample of caregivers (n=41) of RDC bipolar disorder was systematically interviewed to determine how this role affected them. RESULTS: Caregivers reported significant difficulties in their relationships with the patient when s/he was unwell, with considerable impact on their own employment, finances, legal matters, co

Lack of coordination of nonverbal behaviour between patients and interviewers as a potential risk factor to depression recurrence: vulnerability accumulation in depression.

BACKGROUND: Coordination of nonverbal behaviour during interactions is a prerequisite for satisfactory relationships. Lack of coordination may form a risk factor for depression. The 'vulnerability-accumulation hypothesis' assumes that vulnerability to recurrence of depression will increase with increasing experience of depressive episodes. Therefore it is expected that interviewers and patients remitted from a recurrent episode of depression would reach less coordination during a clinical interview compared to interviewers and patients remitted from a first lifetime episode. Moreover, we assum

[Disturbances in interpersonal functioning and levels of anxiety, depression and aggression in persons persecuted for political reasons in Poland in the years 1944-1956].

The article presents the results of comparison of 30 victims of political persecution in Poland in the years 1944-1956 (with a diagnosis of PTSD) with a control group in regard to the styles of interpersonal functioning, anxiety, depression and aggression. The examined persons manifest changes in the quality of social contacts--increased results on the scales of hostility syndrome, helplessness, and appeal for help, and decreased results on the scales examining pro-social tendencies. The examined persons are characterized by low affiliation, high level of indifference as well as features devel

Social phobia subtypes in the National Comorbidity Survey.

OBJECTIVE: This article presents epidemiologic data on the distinction between social phobia characterized by pure speaking fears and that characterized by other social fears. METHOD: The data come from the National Comorbidity Survey (N = 8,098). Social phobia was assessed with a revised version of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview. RESULTS: Latent class analysis showed that the brief set of social fears assessed in the survey can be disaggregated into a class characterized largely by speaking fears and a second class characterized by a broader range of social fears. One-thir

Subjective quality of life and standard of living: a 10-year follow-up of out-patients with schizophrenia.

In 1984, a study in Goteborg, Sweden, reported the quality of life of 61 out-patients with schizophrenia (DSM-III) to be low, despite their high standard of living. The respondents used an instrument (QLS-100) developed by the author to indicate which of 100 items they considered to be unsatisfactory. Interviews captured objective conditions of the patients' lives and their quality-of-life goals for each unsatisfactory item. The results of the study led during the late 1980s to deliberately individualized services, aimed at helping patients to attain their own quality-of-life goals. In total,

Hostility, sodium consumption, and cardiovascular response to interpersonal stress.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have reported poorer health behaviors in high vs. low hostile subjects. The role of stress in these observed differences has not been explored although interpersonal stress does increase cardiovascular response in high hostiles. Given evidence that stress may induce increased salt-intake, this study examined the role of hostility and interpersonal stress in increasing sodium consumption in addition to cardiovascular reactivity. METHOD: Sixty-nine male undergraduates were categorized into high (HiHo) and low hostile (LoHo) groups based on Buss-Durkee Hostility Inven

[The relative importance of independent living for the social functioning of the elderly].

This article confronts the belief that, among elderly persons, living (in)dependently is equivalent to functioning (in)dependently. It has been examined to what degree the living situation of elderly persons (either living independently or in a residential home) affects the degree of social functioning (as indicated by the size of the personal network, participation in voluntary organizations, outdoor mobility and loneliness), when the differences in need for care and background characteristics are taken into account. Respondents were 2523 older persons between 68 and 90 years of age, who took

Ambulatory medical education: teachers' activities, teaching cost, and residents' satisfaction.

PURPOSE: To assess faculty activities and costs in supervising ambulatory patient care at a family practice clinic, and to assess resident satisfaction with access to ambulatory care teaching. METHOD: This time-and-motion study was conducted in 1993 over two three-week periods (at the end of one academic year and at the beginning of another) in a family practice clinic affiliated with the University of Iowa College of Medicine. Observers recorded time spent by 14 faculty on teaching and non-teaching activities. Thirty-two residents were surveyed about their satisfaction with access to teachin

[Effects of total laryngectomy on the quality of life: a study on certain psychological aspects].

The importance of certain psychological aspects during post-surgical rehabilitation of laringectomized patients is being more and more emphasized in research on the subject. The aim of this study is to consider a group of 55 patients who had undergone a total laryngectomy 6 to 48 months previously. The patients studied spoke using an esophageal voice and were chosen from among a group of 400 operated in our Department. This investigation was carried out not only from an organic point of view but took into consideration the consequence of such an important disability in the personal psychologic

Normal and deviant behavior in blind children with ROP.

Congenitally blind children, especially with ROP, are at risk for developing autistic traits. Early behavior risk screening would be of value, but no instruments with acceptable specificity are available. Traditional behavioral symptoms of infantile autism also characterize blind children without autistic disturbance. This report attempts at identifying early behavior patterns that distinguish autistic from non-autistic blind children with ROP. Developmental data, parents' reports, and video-recordings are analyzed. It is concluded that observations of developmental delays are not specific eno

Formulation-based treatment of a complex phobia.

This case study describes the treatment of a 22-year-old woman presenting with a complex balloon phobia. She was first treated by the empirically proven method of in vivo exposure and then by a course of behavior therapy based upon the case formulation. Although the exposure resulted in some decrease in phobic symptoms, the formulation-based treatment produced significantly greater clinical improvement in the phobia and also impacted other problem areas. Three-year follow-up data are provided.
