From "won't learn" to "can't learn" in language learning: Unpacking the chain mediating role of boredom and negative rumination.

Drawing on Response Style Theory, this study examines how the ideal L2 self is associated with learning burnout through the mediating role of boredom and negative rumination in language learning. A questionnaire survey was conducted among 465 Chinese university students, and Structural Equation Modeling was conducted to examine the relationship between the four variables. The results indicate that: (1) The ideal L2 self did not exert a significant direct effect on learning burnout; (2) Boredom and negative rumination each independently mediated the association between ideal L2 self and learnin…

Large Language Models and the Future of Peer-Reviewed Medical Publishing: Challenges, Editorial Responses, and a Framework for Responsible Integration.

The public release of large language models (LLMs) in late 2022 has fundamentally altered the landscape of scholarly medical publishing. LLMs now permeate every stage of the academic publishing pipeline, from manuscript drafting and peer review to editorial decision-making, with evidence suggesting that at least 13.5% of biomedical abstracts published in 2024 showed detectable LLM involvement. This rapid adoption has intersected with pre-existing structural vulnerabilities, including escalating article processing charges, publish-or-perish incentives, a chronic peer reviewer shortage, and inad…

Generative artificial intelligence and large language models in sports medicine: a scoping review of applications, accuracy, and ethical implications.

BACKGROUND: Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), particularly large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, GPT-3.5, and GPT-4, is rapidly being integrated into sports medicine practice. These tools are increasingly used by health professionals, coaches, and athletes for training prescription, rehabilitation, nutrition, mental health support, injury prevention, and academic writing. However, their adoption has outpaced the development of robust evidence regarding their clinical utility, accuracy, and safety, and no comprehensive synthesis of this emerging field currently exists. AIM: T…

The Role of Language and Parental Nativity in Specialty Services Use Among Latino Families with Children with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

Latino children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) face disparities in accessing specialty services. Using 2020-2023 National Survey of Children's Health data (N = 2,497), we conducted logistic regressions to examine how parental nativity and household language affect specialty services use among Latino children with IDD. While children of immigrant parents had lower odds of service use, this association was explained by household language. Children in Spanish-speaking households were significantly less likely to receive services (OR = 0.53, CI = 0.33-0.84). The mediation a…

Evaluating the Diagnostic and Concurrent Validity of the DREAM-IT in Mandarin-Speaking Toddlers With Autism Spectrum Disorder and Developmental Language Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Early language delay is a common presenting concern among toddlers with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and developmental language disorder (DLD), creating challenges for clinical assessment and referral decisions. Although ASD and DLD differ in core social-communicative features, restricted/repetitive behaviours, and developmental mechanisms, language-focused assessment may provide complementary information about early communicative profiles. However, culturally adapted tools for assessing early language and communication in Mandarin-speaking toddlers remain limited. METHODS: A to…

Neural processing of speech envelopes from different languages and post-stimulation functional connectivity in newborns: an fNIRS study.

Speech envelopes convey low-frequency temporal structure, including speech rhythm and prosody, and provide important cues for early speech processing in newborns. However, how the newborn brain processes speech envelopes and how brief exposure to them affects post-stimulation neural activity remain unclear. Using a mixed design with language condition as a between-subjects factor and resting-state time as a within-subjects factor, we assigned 73 newborns from Mandarin-speaking environments to a Mandarin group (n = 25), a French group (n = 23), or an English group (n = 25). Functional near-infr…

Using Large Language Models for Sensitivity Analysis in Causal Inference: Case Studies on Cornfield's Inequality and the E-Value.

Sensitivity analysis methods such as the Cornfield's inequality and the E-value were developed to assess the robustness of observed associations against unmeasured confounding - a major challenge in observational studies. However, the calculation and interpretation of these methods can be difficult for clinicians and interdisciplinary researchers. Recent advances in large language models (LLMs) offer accessible tools that could assist sensitivity analyses, but their reliability in this context has not been studied. We assess four widely used LLMs, ChatGPT, Claude, DeepSeek, and Gemini, on thei…

Performance of Large Language Models in Oral Cancer Patient Education: An Evaluation of Reliability, Readability, and Patient Communication Quality.

BACKGROUND: As society is increasingly depending on large language models (LLMs) for health-related questions, it is essential to objectively evaluate the quality and accessibility of the oral cancer information they provide. Although LLMs occupy a growing space in digital health communication, it remains unknown whether the information they generate is both reliable and easy to read. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reliability and readability, respectively, of the responses generated by four mainstream LLMs (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and DeepSeek) to questions rel…

Functional location of the language cortical areas in focal refractory epilepsy using the conventional, selective, and supraselective Wada test.

In refractory focal epilepsy, resective surgery offers an alternative for seizure control. However, there is a risk of language deterioration when the epileptogenic zone involves an eloquent cortical region. The Wada test involves the insertion of a catheter through the internal carotid artery and the injection of a short-acting anesthetic, resulting in transient loss of hemisphere function. While its specificity is high, its sensitivity is reduced, despite its limited or absent spatial resolution. Additionally, the generalized action of the anesthetic may lead to misinterpretations due to glo…

Promoting the integration of language, cognition and gesture for individuals with neurological disorders rehabilitation: A point of view and directions for future research.

The cost of neurological disorders for our societies is increasing and calls for innovative and effective treatments. A large body of neuroscientific findings indicates that action and cognition are largely intermingled in the brain. Consistent research comes from studies on the link between gestures and language, for instance, showing that co-speech gestures play a role in lexical retrieval. Consequently, a perspective which integrates gestures and language in rehabilitation appears promising for the treatment of many language-related disorders occurring following neurodegenerative disease or…

Accuracy of Auditory and Auditory-Visual Voice Quality Perception by Speech Language Pathologists and Ear, Nose, and Throat Specialists.

Voice quality is evaluated by speech and language pathologists (SLPs) and ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialists. They often use either auditory-perceptual assessment or laryngoscopy, which provides visualization of the larynx or both (auditory-visual assessment). This study compared the accuracy of auditory-perceptual voice quality assessment between auditory and auditory-visual assessments, and between SLPs and ENTs. Thirty SLPs and 30 ENTs listened to recordings that represent six voice qualities (high pitch, whisper, strained whisper, vocal fry, strained, and wet voice) realized with the …

A Family Systems Approach to Augmentative and Alternative Communication Service Delivery in the Inpatient Setting: Recommendations for Speech-Language Pathologists.

PURPOSE: Family-centered care is necessary to deliver high-quality health care services. It is especially critical that family members are included in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) service provision in the inpatient setting. AAC can be overwhelming to families and requires accommodations for it to effectively integrate into daily communicative interactions. Currently, there is minimal guidance for family-centered care by speech-language pathologists (SLPs) working with children with limited functional speech in the inpatient pediatric setting. The purpose of this clinical fo…
