The Old World Screwworm fly (Chrysomya bezziana) has recently been causing aggressive myiasis in pet dogs in Hong Kong, and the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department of Hong Kong has confirmed the presence of Chrysomya bezziana in the territory. This report describes screwworm infestation in pet dogs presented for treatment at our clinic in the past year. Screwworm fly larvae were found in typically punched out round wounds or embedded in exposed or neglected wounds. Infested wounds had a characteristic strong offensive smell and oozed a sero-sanguineous exudate or frank blood. Re…

INTRODUCTION: Strongyloidiasis is an parasitic intestinal disease, frequent in tropical countries and fairly rare in temperate areas under certain conditions. Disseminated forms can provoke multivisceral damage.
CASE REPORT: A 75 year-old woman, hospitalized for occlusion, developed multivisceral (cerebral, renal, cardiac pulmonary and hepatic) damage over 48 hours, attributed to strongyloidiasis. The diagnosis was confirmed by isolation of larvae in the tracheal and gastric aspiration fluids. Treatment combined ivermectin and albendazole.
COMMENTS: Disseminated stronglyloidiasis is essentia…

BACKGROUND: The presence of Liesegang rings (LRs) in cytologic specimens is a morphologic curiosity. The exact mechanism of formation and composition of these peculiar rings is a mystery. Their morphologic resemblance to parasites is well recognized and illustrated. Their association with calcium oxalate-like crystals and their presence in a tubercular lymph node are described for the first time below.
CASES: Giemsa-stained aspiration smears from an enlarged lymph node and two breast lumps showed purple rings of variable morphology resembling ova, larvae or adult parasites. Misdiagnosis of pa…

Follow-up stool examinations were carried out on two groups of the subjects who were screened negative (group 1) or positive (group 2) for Strongyloides stercoralis by the agar plate culture. This technique could detect S. stercoralis larvae in 87.5-96.4% of the subjects in group 2 and 0-5.9% of the subjects in group 1 on various days of the eight-week and four-week follow-up periods, respectively. The detection rate on each day of examination was not statistically different from that on the first day in both groups. Quantitative measurement of S. stercoralis larvae excreted in the feces of th…

C. elegans cki-1 encodes a member of the CIP/KIP family of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors, and functions to link postembryonic developmental programs to cell cycle progression. The expression pattern of cki-1::GFP suggests that cki-1 is developmentally regulated in blast cells coincident with G1, and in differentiating cells. Ectopic expression of CKI-1 can prematurely arrest cells in G1, while reducing cki-1 activity by RNA-mediated interference (RNAi) causes extra larval cell divisions, suggesting a role for cki-1 in the developmental control of G1/S. cki-1 activity is required for the s…

Strongyloides stercoralis is an intestinal parasite in humans. Infected patients may be asymptomatic or have mild to moderate abdominal symp … ltration over the right upper lung field. Papanicolaou stain of sputum demonstrated the rabditiform larvae of S. stercoralis. Stool examination revealed S. stercoralis larvae and eggs. He received two courses of albendazole treatment, but died 5 weeks after admission from Gram-negative bacteremia. This case is a classic presentation of the S. stercorali …

Experiments were carried out with mice of CFW inbred strain infected with 200 Trichinella spiralis larvae and divided into two groups: experimental and control. The experimental mice were injected with phytohaemagglutinin P (PHA-P), 24 h before infection. The all animals were killed between 7-133 days post infection and the pieces of spleens, mesenteric lymph nodes, jejunum and masseter muscles were sectioned in a cryostat and examined with monoclonal antibodies (anti-Thy 1, 2, anti-CD4+ and anti-CD8+) by immunoenzymatic method. In the animals treated with PHA-P, more numerous CD4+ cells were …

A 58-year-old chronic alcoholism patient, who complained of epigastric discomfort, nausea, and frequent loose stool was diagnosed as strongyloidiasis accompanied by duodenal ulcer. The symptoms first appeared two years ago and aggravated during the recent 3 months, and he lost 4 kg of his body weight. Stool examination revealed rhabditoid nematode larvae, which were confirmed as those of Strongyloides stercoralis after cultivation of them to filariform larvae. At duodenoscopy, duodenal ulcer was found. The patient was treated with albendazole (200 mg, bid, for 14 days) for strongyloidiasis and…

Lungs of 30 animals of the red deer (Cervus elaphus hippelaphus) attacked by parasitic helminths were submitted to a histological examination, and the changes which were caused by the nematodes of Protostrongylidae family were estimated. The lungworm Varestrongylus sagittatus (Mueller, 1891) creates hatching tubercles of a dark-red or yellow-green and even ochre colour. The lobular catarrhal bronchopneumonia is a histological correlate. In hatching tubercles there are located adult nematodes, ova of 46 x 27 microns and larvae of the 1st stage. For the infection of the Elaphostrongylus cervi ne…

Epizootic of wild water birds caused by the toxin Clostridium botulinum of C type occurred in extensive shallow artificial lakes of the Nové Mlýny dam system from May to October 1988 and later on from February to early April 1989. In total more than 3,000 dead or dying birds of 44 species were found, the following orders were prevailing: Anseriformes (56%), Lariformes (33%), Charadriiformes (6%) and Ralliformes (4%). Botulotoxin was detected at high concentrations in sarcophagic fly larvae of Calliphora vomitoria and Lucilia sericata which were collected in bird cadavers, but it was not found …

The antigenicity of Trichinella spiralis muscle larvae was studied for the purpose of developing an immunodiagnostic test for trichinosis. Ultrathin sections of fixed larvae were treated with sera from patients with a variety of parasitic infections including trichinosis, anisakiasis, gnathostomiasis, fascioliasis, dirofilariasis, severe trichuriasis, moderate trichuriasis, paragonimiasis, cysticercosis cellulosae hominis and diphyllobothriasis, and then treated with protein A-tagged colloidal gold. The cuticle surface and stichocyte alpha 0- and alpha 1-granules reacted predominantly with ser…

A comprehensive study of the transmission of Onchocerca volvulus at 4 locations in Guatemala with different prevalence rates of onchocerciasis included observations on potential secondary vectors, the most prevalent of which were Simulium metallicum, S. callidum, and S. gonzalezi. Filariae encountered in S. metallicum were primarily of a Dipetalonema-like species, but third-stage larvae indistinguishable from O. volvulus were found in 4 flies of this species. Our findings suggest that O. volvulus may occasionally be transmitted by S. metallicum, but such transmission is likely limited to areas…

The objective of this study was to determine if Dirofilaria immitis larvae would survive in diffusion chambers implanted in dogs and mice and secondly to determine if mice could be immunized against infection with D. immitis. Dirofilaria immitis third-stage larvae (L3) survived and grew in diffusion chambers implanted in dogs and mice for at least 3 wk. BALB/c mice, which were repeatedly infected with live L3, showed resistance to challenge infections. Dead L3, with or without adjuvants elicited no protective immunity. A correlation was found between the degree of immune protection seen in mic…

Some species of calliphorid blowflies lay their eggs in wounds; their larvae develop by feeding on the tissue, and the infection is known as myiasis or fly-strike. But wounds, from whatever cause, are frequently contaminated with bacteria - many o f which can spread in the bloodstream causing septicaemia and/or toxaemia. For example, wound contamination with Clostridium welchii - leading to 'gas gangrene' - was a frequent cause of death amongst battlefield casualties. It is from such situations that early observations were made on the beneficial effect of some blowfly larvae in limiting the ba…

A survey was done of Canadians who had been interned by the Japanese during World War II to assess the prevalence of latent infection with Strongyloides stercoralis in this group. Packages containing three mail-in kits and a questionnaire were sent to 992 men, 694 (70%) of whom responded. Larvae were found in the stool specimens of four of the respondents. Examination of stool specimens after formalin-ether concentration was the most successful method of detecting Strongyloides larvae. The Baermann concentration technique yielded negative results in all four men. Three of the four cases of str…

An entire burrow of a female Sarcoptes scabiei (var. hominis) mite was examined by scanning electron microscopy during serial transverse sectioning. The elevated roof and the wall were composed of compacted corneocytes. The floor had a smooth surface except at the anterior end. Here it was made up of nucleated stratum granulosum cells, etched in appearance, presumably having been chewed by the mite. The female mite, the larvae, scybala, and eggs were also examined. The ultrastructure of the eggshell surface revealed it to have a distinctive geometric patterning. Cross-sectioning showed this sh…

Droncit and Oxichloron in total doses of 100 (50 mg/kg for two days) and 300 mg/kg (100 mg/kg for three days) of body weight were applied for the treatment of cysticercosis 12 (Droncit) and 6 (Oxichloron) weeks after experimental infection. Four or six weeks after the treatment dead cysticerci or their remnants were found. There occurred a striking vacuolization of the larval tegument, but even six weeks after the treatment, muscles, portions of subtegumental cells and remnants of excretory canalicular system and microtriches were discernible. The structure of microtriches was still well prese…

Large tumors removed from the lower abdomen and pleural cavity of a 24-year-old male Amerindian in Paraguay consisted mainly of multitudes of minute, proliferating, acephalic cestode larvae embedded in fibrous tissue. The parasite resembled Sparganum proliferum Stiles 1908 but was markedly less differentiated. From a review of the literature and examination of available reference material, it is concluded that in addition to the present one there are eight well documented cases of proliferating acephalic larval cestode infection in man: five in Japan and one in Florida (USA) that were S. proli…

The behavior of the IFT serum titer in 80 guinea-pigs, experimentally infected with Trichinella spiralis, was tested before and after treatment with mebendazole for 6 months. For 14 consecutive days each animal was drenched with 40 mg mebendazole/kg bw on the 25th, 35th and 45th day after infection. After the 2 weeks therapy, living trichinella larvae were not found in any of the 3 treated groups of guinea-pigs. On the other hand even after 6 months viable larvae were found in the muscular tissue of the control animals. Within the first two months p.i. the titers were rising equally in both tr…
