Exploring the therapeutic potential of beetroot juice in patients with peripheral artery disease: A Narrative review.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a circulatory disorder caused by atherosclerosis, leading to the narrowing or blockage of peripheral arteries, often affecting the arteries in the lower limbs. This condition can result in intermittent claudication and severe limb ischemia, significantly reducing patients' quality of life. In recent years, increasing evidence suggests that dietary interventions play a crucial role in the prevention and management of PAD, offering a safe and non-invasive treatment option. Beetroot, a natural root vegetable, demonstrates significant health benefits through its

An optimized protocol for Candida albicans infection in Schmidtea mediterranea to study fungal pathogenesis and host defense.

Candida albicans is a common opportunistic fungal pathogen that asymptomatically colonizes most humans. Although typically a benign commensal, dysbiosis caused by antibiotic use, immune dysfunction, or epithelial barrier disruption can trigger fungal overgrowth and infection, ranging from superficial mucosal disease to life-threatening systemic candidiasis. New preclinical infection models are needed to dissect C. albicans pathogenesis in vivo across distinct stages of infection and with different measurable host outcomes. We previously established the planarian Schmidtea mediterranea as an in

Corneal Topography - a Review of Available Investigation Methods and Impact in the Diagnosis and Follow-Up of Keratoconus.

Keratoconus is a bilateral non-inflammatory ectatic disease of the cornea, with an asymmetrical evolution, that occurs in young people during puberty, progressing during the second and third decades and stabilizing around the age of 40. It is characterised by an insidious and progressive thinning of the cornea, myopia and astigmatism, which lead to a decrease in visual acuity. Slit-lamp examination findings in the early stages of keratoconus may appear normal. However, in advanced stages of untreated keratoconus, visual acuity is diminished, which leads to a lower quality of life. Corneal topo

Evidence of Impaired Neuroimmune System in Post-COVID Syndrome-A Whole Brain Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy Study.

Chronic fatigue, mood disturbances, and cognitive deficits characterize the neurological post-COVID syndrome (PCS). This study aimed to find out if PCS shows a diagnostic brain metabolic pattern that might also support clarification of the PCS pathology. Whole brain proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy imaging (wbMRSI) was applied to assess brain metabolites in PCS patients. Patients' data were compared to those of matched healthy controls examined before the COVID pandemic. Patients underwent clinical and neuropsychological assessment and filled in self-report questionnaires related to fati

Characterization of Upper Limb Motor Dysfunctions in Spinocerebellar Ataxia 38: Kinematic Analysis of the "Hand-to-Mouth" Task.

Individuals affected by spinocerebellar ataxia 38 (SCA 38) progressively lose the ability to efficiently perform important activities of daily living involving the use of upper limbs, like personal care and feeding. However, it is important to note that data on the extent of upper limb motor dysfunction in SCAs are generally limited, and specifically, no information is currently available for SCA38-particularly in the context of performing functional tasks. To partly fill this gap, in this study we analyze the kinematic features of the Hand-to-Mouth task in 7 individuals with SCA 38 and an equ

Australian Women Veterans' Experiences of Gendered Disempowerment and Abuse Within Military Service and Transition.

Disempowering experiences of military service and transition for women veterans exist within an established, dominant, masculinised culture, in which their presence is highly visible, challenged, and often subject to institutional prejudice. Sexual abuse of women in the military, in particular, is a persistent finding in contemporary international research and national inquiries into military culture in countries such as Australia, the United Kingdom (UK), the United States (US), and Canada. This study sought to understand military service, transition to civilian life, and post-military experi

[Design and application of an insulation device for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation transfer pipeline].

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a key continuous extracorporeal life support technology that can partially or completely replace a patient's cardiopulmonary function, thereby winning valuable time for the diagnosis and treatment of the primary disease. With the widespread application of ECMO, the need for transport has increased. However, during transfers, the standard heater unit is often large and inconvenient to carry, while alternative warming measures tend to be ineffective. This frequently leads to complications such as hypothermia or the inability to maintain body temperat

Gut microbes: Therapeutic Target for neuropsychiatric disorders.

Neuropsychiatric diseases encompass a range of mental and neurological disorders that have a significant and far-reaching effect on an individual's quality of life. These conditions affect not only the mental status but also the physical well-being of individuals, which leads to weakened immune systems and other diseases. Emerging research underscores a significant connection between the gut microbiome and neuropsychiatric diseases, suggesting that microbial communities within the gastrointestinal tract may influence brain function and mental health. Gut dysbiosis is caused by various factors,

RIPK3 deficiency ameliorates diabetic sarcopenia through proteostasis regulation by suppressing inflammatory signaling and cellular stress pathways.

Diabetic sarcopenia is a major complication of diabetes severely impacting patient quality of life and increasing mortality risk. Its pathogenesis remains incompletely understood and effective treatments are lacking. This study reveals the critical role and molecular mechanisms of Receptor-interacting protein kinase 3 (RIPK3) in skeletal muscle atrophy during type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Using RIPK3-knockout diabetic mice, we found that RIPK3 deficiency significantly ameliorated muscle atrophy, as evidenced by increased myofiber cross-sectional area, restored muscle mass, and enhanced exer

Sarcopenia in rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases: pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management.

Sarcopenia, defined by the progressive decline of skeletal muscle mass, strength, and performance, is an important, yet often overlooked complication of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs). It arises from a multifactorial interplay of chronic systemic inflammation, oxidative stress, hormonal dysregulation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and prolonged glucocorticoid therapy. Elevated pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-1β, promote catabolic pathways, impair regeneration, and accelerate muscle degradation. The prevalence of sarcopenia in RMDs may reach 40%, particularly

Rescue of lysosomal acid lipase deficiency in mice by rAAV8 liver gene transfer.

BACKGROUND: Lysosomal acid lipase deficiency (LAL-D) is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the LIPA gene, which results in lipid accumulation leading to multi-organ failure. If left untreated, the severe form of LAL-D results in premature death within the first year of life due to failure to thrive and hepatic insufficiency. Weekly systemic injections of recombinant LAL protein, referred as enzyme replacement therapy, is the only available supportive treatment. METHOD: Here, we characterized a novel Lipa-/- mouse model and developed a curative gene therapy treatment based

"CANDLE syndrome: A closer look at a rare autoinflammatory disorder".

A newly identified autoinflammatory condition called CANDLE syndrome (chronic atypical neutrophilic dermatosis with lipodystrophy and increased temperature) is characterized by early onset, recurring fever, skin lesions, and multisystemic inflammatory symptoms. It has been demonstrated that the majority of patients had PSMB8 gene mutations. It leads to dysfunction in the proteasome/immunoproteasome system and subsequent overproduction of type 1 interferons. Patients usually exhibit lipodystrophy, fever, rashes on the skin, and malnutrition in the early stages of infancy. The results of skin bi
