Comparative morphology of the rhinarium and upper lip in sigmodontine rodents: Refined nomenclature, intertribal variation in a phylogenetic framework, and functional inferences.

Rodents have received substantial attention in the study of olfaction. However, the rhinarium, the naked part of the nose, which plays an important role in chemical, tactile, and thermal perception, has been relatively overlooked. This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the rhinarium morphology and spatially associated structures (i.e., upper lip, and philtrum) in sigmodontines, a diverse group within the Cricetidae rodents. The research covers 483 specimens representing 145 species, accounting for 74% of genera in the clade, including all 13 recognized tribes, three incertae sedis gen…

Cleft lip and palate transmembrane protein 1-like is a putative regulator of tumorigenesis and sensitization of cervical cancer cells to cisplatin.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer stands as one of the leading causes of cancer-related mortality in women worldwide, yet the precise functions of host genes implicated in its pathogenesis remain elusive. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have revealed a significant association between the CLPTM1L locus and cervical cancer risk in European women, and aberrant expression of CLPTM1L has been noted in various malignant tumors. However, the role of CLPTM1L in cervical cancer remains largely unexplored. METHODS: The expression of CLPTM1L in cervical cancer cells and tissues was detected by RT-qPCR.

Long-term evaluation of Elmelegy's technique of local muscle transposition for the functional restoration of large upper or lower lip defects.

BACKGROUND: Although more than 200 techniques have been reported for the reconstruction of the upper and lower lip defects since 1000 BC, none of them is ideal. Local flaps may result in extra skin incisions and in some cases, the surgeon may be confronted with the lack of sufficient tissues for the reconstruction of large defects. Several techniques have been described for near-total lip reconstruction. The two major available techniques are local flap reconstruction (Bernard-von Burrow-Webster technique) and free micro-vascular tissue transfer. In this study, we are going to evaluate the fun…
