Plasma selenium (Se), zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) levels and antioxidant metalloenzymes, glutathione peroxidase (GPX) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), were studied in 17 patients on maintenance hemodialysis (HD) (group I), 14 uremic patients (group II) and 14 healthy subjects (group III). Plasma Se levels and erythrocyte GPX were significantly lower in the HD group (for Se: 0.69 +/- 0.12 vs. 1.05 +/- 0.13 mumol/l in controls; for erythrocyte GPX: 34.4 +/- 6.4 vs. 49.2 +/- 9 IU/g hemoglobin in controls) and a significant correlation was found between the two parameters (r = 0.66, p less than 0.005

IgM antibodies to monophosphoryl-lipid A were found to be elevated in sera from children with all forms of juvenile arthritis (JA) and systemic lupus erythematosus. Of more interest, in patients with pauciarticular JA, IgG antibody titers to monophosphoryl-lipid A were found to be correlated with the C3a concentration and the C3d:C3 ratio. Although the full specificity of these antibodies is unknown, they are the first that have been found to be correlated with complement activation products in any form of JA.

Plasma lipid peroxides were measured as malonyldialdehyde (MDA) by the thiobarbituric acid (TBA) method in 75 children suffering from Plasmodium falciparum malaria. Their riboflavin status was assessed by measuring erythrocyte glutathione reductase activation coefficients (EGRACs), and values greater than 1.40 were regarded as indicating biochemical deficiency. In vitro antigenic reactivity of lipid A from Pseudomonas diminuta and Pseudomonas vesicularis with homologous and heterologous lipid A antibodies including monoclonal antibodies was studied by inhibition test of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The applicability of a lipid microsphere drug delivery system to ophthalmic preparations was examined using a lipid microsphere containing hydrocortisone 17-butyrate 21-propionate (HBP). 3H-labelled HBP ophthalmic suspension and 3H-labelled HBP lipid microsphere were applied to rabbit eyes, and the eyes were enucleated after 1 and 3 hours to determine 3H-labelled HBP levels in the ocular tissues. The technique is offer for rapid quantitative definition of sterols having a system of delta 5,7-conjugated double bonds which conditions biological activity of D vitamin--the result of photoisomerisation of the sterols. The technique bases on the analysis of UV absorption spectra of unsaponifiable lipid fraction of several kinds of mutant yeast strains and the model mixtures of sterols. The results obtained concerning the estimation of delta 5,7-sterols containing in total fraction are confirmed by gas-liquid-chromatography and mass-spectrometry data.
