Academic decision making and prospect theory.

Two studies are reported that investigate the applicability of prospect theory to college students' academic decision making. Exp. 1 failed to provide support for the risk-seeking portion of the fourfold pattern predicted by prospect theory but did find the greater weighting of losses over gains. Using a more sensitive dependent measure, in Exp. 2 the results of the first experiment were replicated in terms of the gain-loss effect and also found some support for the fourfold pattern in the interaction between probabilities and gain versus loss. The greatest risk-seeking was found in the high p

Do peers matter in the development of self-control? Evidence from a longitudinal study of youth.

According to Gottfredson and Hirschi's self-control theory, child and adolescent variation in self-control results primarily from variations in parental socialization. Although much research reveals a link between parenting and self-control, many recent studies indicate that the etiology of self-control is more complex than what has been theoretically specified. In further considering this issue, the current study first presents a theoretical model that emphasizes the role that peers may play in the development of self-control, even when accounting for the influence of parents. Next, we empiri

The relation of psychological stress to pregnancy outcome among women undergoing in-vitro fertilization and intracytoplasmic sperm injection.

A considerable literature has been accumulated regarding the relation of psychological factors to in-vitro fertilization outcome. However, study findings have been inconsistent, and the association between psychological stress and in-vitro fertilization outcomes is still unclear. The aim of the authors in this study was to examine the relation of infertility-related stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms to in-vitro fertilization outcome. The sample consisted of 160 women with fertility problems undergoing fertility treatment in a public hospital in Athens, Greece between November 2008 and J

Youth self-report of physical and sexual abuse: a latent class analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if meaningful groups of at-risk pre-adolescent youth could be identified based on their self-report of physical and sexual abuse histories. METHODS: Youth participating in a consortium of ongoing longitudinal studies were interviewed using an audio-computer assisted self-interview (A-CASI) when they were approximately 12 years of age to obtain information about their perceived experiences of physical (18 items) and sexual (12 items) abuse. In addition, Child Protective Service records were reviewed and the taxonomy developed for defining maltreatment characteristics (B

Anxiety/stress among mothers living with HIV: effects on parenting skills and child outcomes.

Parental HIV infection has been associated with negative outcomes for children, and parenting skills appear to be one mechanism operating in that association. The present study focuses on the relations between maternal stress, parenting, and child functioning among families where the mother is living with HIV. Sixty-nine mothers with at least one child between six and 12 years old completed questionnaires at the baseline assessment of an intervention designed to facilitate maternal disclosure of HIV status. Respondents were assessed using multiple measures of stress/anxiety, parenting skills,

Understanding animal fears: a comparison of the cognitive vulnerability and harm-looming models.

BACKGROUND: The Cognitive Vulnerability Model holds that both clinical and sub-clinical manifestations of animal fears are a result of how an animal is perceived, and can be used to explain both individual differences in fear acquisition and the uneven distribution of fears in the population. This study looked at the association between fear of a number of animals and perceptions of the animals as uncontrollable, unpredictable, dangerous and disgusting. Also assessed were the perceived loomingness, prior familiarity, and negative evaluation of the animals as well as possible conditioning exper

Stress and anger as contextual factors and preexisting cognitive schemas: predicting parental child maltreatment risk.

Progress in the child maltreatment field depends on refinements in leading models. This study examines aspects of social information processing theory (Milner, 2000) in predicting physical maltreatment risk in a community sample. Consistent with this theory, selected preexisting schema (external locus-of-control orientation, inappropriate developmental expectations, low empathic perspective-taking ability, and low perceived attachment relationship to child) were expected to predict child abuse risk beyond contextual factors (parenting stress and anger expression). Based on 115 parents' self-re

[Is the developmental model accurate for all psychiatric disorders?].

In the 1980's a neurodevelopmental hypothesis of schizophrenia was proposed. Since that time, the role of early developmental age as a risk period for action of etiological factors in psychosis was confirmed. Additionally, many disturbances of pre-schizophrenic persons in the developmental age were demonstrated. Recently published longitudinal cohort studies indicate that majority of the psychiatric disorders other than schizophrenia are preceded by occurrence of psychiatric disorders in childhood and early adolescence. Moreover, in numerous studies of adult anxiety and mood disorders, the rol

The relation between mood and sexuality in heterosexual men.

This paper reports on a study of individual variability in the relationship between negative mood and sexuality in men. Part 1 involves a questionnaire survey of 919 white heterosexual men, asking what typically happens to sexual interest and response when (a) depressed and (b) anxious/stressed, using the Mood and Sexuality Questionnaire (MSQ). Trait measures of sexual inhibition and excitation, depression, anxiety, and sensation seeking were also used. Relationships between trait measures and MSQ scores were tested using multiple linear and ordinal logistic regression. Of those reporting the

Patients' experience of being critically ill or severely injured and cared for in an intensive care unit in relation to the ICU syndrome. Part I.

The intensive care unit (ICU) syndrome is regarded principally as a complex interaction of several contributory factors, all of which can be seen as partly responsible for the development of the syndrome. The purpose of this study was to describe and give a deeper insight into patients' experiences and memory recall, both during and after their stay in the ICU. Nineteen patients who had been respirator treated (ventilated), and had stayed at least 36 hours in the ICU, were interviewed about one week after discharge, and again 4-8 weeks after their discharge from the ICU. Patients' experiences

Emotional and behavioural problems and competencies among immigrant and non-immigrant adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare levels of emotional and behavioural problems and competencies among immigrant and non-immigrant adolescents, and to determine factors that may contribute to any differences reported. METHOD: Subjects were selected randomly from students aged 12-16 years attending a high school with a high proportion of immigrants in Perth, Western Australia. Parents completed the Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL), and students completed the Youth Self-Report (YSR) and a Personal History Questionnaire. RESULTS: On univariate analyses, non-immigrant adolescents ha

Two alternative job stress models and the risk of coronary heart disease.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the association between two alternative job stress models-the effort-reward imbalance model and the job strain model-and the risk of coronary heart disease among male and female British civil servants. METHODS: The logistic regression analyses were based on a prospective cohort study (Whitehall II study) comprising 6895 men and 3413 women aged 35 to 55 years. Baseline measures of both job stress models were related to new reports of coronary heart disease over a mean 5.3 years of follow-up. RESULTS: The imbalance between personal efforts (competitiveness, work

The meaning and function of ritual in psychiatric disorder, religion and everyday behaviour.

OBJECTIVE: Ritual is a central feature of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and is found in other psychiatric conditions. Defined in a general sense, it is seen in the everyday behaviour of animals and of humans, in secular ceremonies, and in religion. This paper examines the various types of ritual. It considers the common features and differences. METHOD: Material from psychiatric, biological, sociological, anthropological and religious studies literature is reviewed and discussed. RESULTS: The term 'ritual' describes a wide variety of phenomena. These include the rituals of OCD and rang

Psychosocial factors, female fertility and pregnancy: a prospective study--Part II: Pregnancy.

The aim of the study was to determine whether psychosocial factors have an influence on the progress and outcome of pregnancy and whether personality-related or stress factors are significant in this respect. One hundred and ninety-one nulliparas without a history of infertility were prospectively studied gynecologically and psychiatrically. Life changes and changes in stress factors were monitored throughout the study period and obstetric complications were registered. By the end of the study period 120 (63%) of the subjects had given birth, 38 (19%) had abortion, 22 (12%) did not conceive an

Panic and avoidance in agoraphobia. Application of path analysis to treatment studies.

We explored a causal sequence between panic and avoidance to provide recommendations for psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy, and their combination in treating agoraphobia. We produced a two-way [( imipramine hydrochloride vs placebo] by [office-based behavioral therapy vs in vivo exposure]) design by amalgamating two studies. We assessed agoraphobic patients for panic and avoidance at these time points: baseline (week 0), midcourse (week 13), and termination (week 26). The causal sequence model was tested by path analysis. Imipramine was superior to placebo in lowering panic and avoidance at both

Performance deficit induced by low doses of dopamine agonists in rats. Toward a model for approaching the neurobiology of negative schizophrenic symptomatology?

In searching for reliable animal models of negative schizophrenic symptomatology, we considered the possibility that a deficient response to rewarding stimuli might be the basis for some features of the disease. Apomorphine (0.015 and 0.03 mg/kg) and 3-PPP (1 mg/kg) caused such a reward deficit when rats were shifted from continuous reinforcement to a fixed ratio (FR4) schedule of food delivery. Further experiments indicated that this effect could be accounted for by a decreased ability of secondary reinforcers to sustain responses, rather than by motor impairment, appetite loss, or reduced re

Prevention by specific perceptual remediation for vulnerable first-graders. Controlled study and follow-up of lasting effects.

In a pretest-posttest design with two matched control groups, 86 first-graders screened as vulnerable to academic failure and behavioral decompensation were each assigned to one of three groups: (1) channel-specific perceptual stimulation, (2) regular academic tutoring (contact controls), or (3) no contact. On most measures, including perceptual and achievement tests and behavior ratings by teachers, group 1 showed more improvement than either of the control groups. Several of these differences were significant (P less than .05, two-tailed). In general, the two control groups came closer to ea

Understanding COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among older adults in post-zero-COVID China: a predictive modeling study.

BACKGROUND: The inadequate vaccination rates observed in China's older population underscore the urgent need for immediate action to accelerate the immunization campaign and mitigate the consequences of adjusting the zero COVID-19 strategy. OBJECTIVE: This study's objective was to identify key predictors of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among older adults in China during the post-zero-COVID period and to develop interpretable models to inform the development of targeted intervention strategies. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study between January and March 2023, sampling 647 older pers

Linking reinforcement learning, working memory, and choice dynamics to age and symptoms of anxiety and depression in adolescence.

Adolescence is a sensitive period characterized by significant neurocognitive development, with important implications for learning and decision-making. Working memory and reinforcement learning are essential for decision making and real-life dynamic adaptation to the environment and are often affected in individuals with anxiety and depression. Using a cognitive computational approach, we investigated associations between working memory, reinforcement learning, age, and symptoms of generalized anxiety and depression in 193 adolescents aged 12-24 years. Participants completed the Reinforcement
