An explainable machine learning framework for predicting the risk of buprenorphine treatment discontinuation for opioid use disorder among commercially insured individuals.

OBJECTIVES: Buprenorphine is an effective evidence-based medication for opioid use disorder (OUD). Yet premature discontinuation undermines treatment effectiveness, increasing the risk of mortality and overdose. We developed and evaluated a machine learning (ML) framework for predicting buprenorphine care discontinuity within 12 months following treatment initiation. METHODS: This retrospective study used United States (US) 2018-2021 MarketScan commercial claims data of insured individuals aged 18-64 who initiated buprenorphine between July 2018 and December 2020 with no buprenorphine prescri

Validity of models for predicting BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations.

BACKGROUND: Deleterious mutations of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes confer susceptibility to breast and ovarian cancer. At least 7 models for estimating the probabilities of having a mutation are used widely in clinical and scientific activities; however, the merits and limitations of these models are not fully understood. OBJECTIVE: To systematically quantify the accuracy of the following publicly available models to predict mutation carrier status: BRCAPRO, family history assessment tool, Finnish, Myriad, National Cancer Institute, University of Pennsylvania, and Yale University. DESIGN: Cross-

Machine-Learning Predictions of Cochlear Implant Functional Outcomes: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVES: Cochlear implant (CI) user functional outcomes are challenging to predict because of the variability in individual anatomy, neural health, CI device characteristics, and linguistic and listening experience. Machine learning (ML) techniques are uniquely poised for this predictive challenge because they can analyze nonlinear interactions using large amounts of multidimensional data. The objective of this article is to systematically review the literature regarding ML models that predict functional CI outcomes, defined as sound perception and production. We analyze the potential stren

Comparative Effectiveness of New Approaches to Improve Mortality Risk Models From Medicare Claims Data.

IMPORTANCE: Risk adjustment models using claims-based data are central in evaluating health care performance. Although US Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) models apply well-vetted statistical approaches, recent changes in the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) coding system and advances in computational capabilities may provide an opportunity for enhancement. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether changes using already available data would enhance risk models and yield greater discrimination in hospital-level performance measures.

Evaluation of Large Language Models in the Diagnosis, Urgency Triage, and Initial Management of Ophthalmic Emergencies.

Introduction Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are progressing rapidly and becoming an integral part of how healthcare professionals obtain medical knowledge. Large language models (LLMs) now enable clinicians to have direct access to medical guidance and support in clinical reasoning. In ophthalmology, where prompt identification of sight-threatening symptoms is essential, these tools can offer diagnostic support, urgency triaging, and initial management guidance, thus potentially reducing delays in care and improving referrals. Limited evidence exists regarding their accuracy, reliab

Bradford distribution and its application in modeling medical data: a suitable alternative to distributions defined on the unit interval.

It has been observed that quite often, in health-related studies/clinical trials data, we frequently come across left/right skewed heavy-tailed survival data for which the available probability models from the existing literature are not adequate. In this article, we explore and study a new probability distribution with a bounded domain, namely the Bradford distribution with a single parameter θ, henceforth, in short BF(θ). For this distribution, several tractability advantages (in particular, for modeling medical data) have not been explored, to date, to the best of the knowledge of the autho

Development of a robust parallel and multi-composite machine learning model for improved diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease: correlation with dementia-associated drug usage and AT(N) protein biomarkers.

INTRODUCTION: Machine learning (ML) algorithms and statistical modeling offer a potential solution to offset the challenge of diagnosing early Alzheimer's disease (AD) by leveraging multiple data sources and combining information on neuropsychological, genetic, and biomarker indicators. Among others, statistical models are a promising tool to enhance the clinical detection of early AD. In the present study, early AD was diagnosed by taking into account characteristics related to whether or not a patient was taking specific drugs and a significant protein as a predictor of Amyloid-Beta (Aβ), ta

Modeling of H2S solubility in ionic liquids: comparison of white-box machine learning, deep learning and ensemble learning approaches.

In the context of gas processing and carbon sequestration, an adequate understanding of the solubility of acid gases in ionic liquids (ILs) under various thermodynamic circumstances is crucial. A poisonous, combustible, and acidic gas that can cause environmental damage is hydrogen sulfide (H2S). ILs are good choices for appropriate solvents in gas separation procedures. In this work, a variety of machine learning techniques, such as white-box machine learning, deep learning, and ensemble learning, were established to determine the solubility of H2S in ILs. The white-box models are group metho

SEIRV epidemiological model for COVID 19 with Holling type II functional response.

Data-driven mathematical models are recognized as a significant tool for understanding infectious disease dynamics and have been valuable in public health research for an extended period of time. In this paper, we develop an SEIRV model that includes susceptible, exposed, infectious, and vaccinated populations to investigate the dynamics of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. We incorporate a Holling type-II functional response in our model, which has been widely useful in studying ecological systems. This approach enables us to conduct comprehensive analysis by integrating analytical, computational, and st

Transformer-based despeckling for laser active polarimetric imaging.

Laser active polarization imaging is susceptible to coherent speckle noise, which severely degrades both image quality and the accuracy of polarization parameter estimation. Existing polarimetric denoising methods, predominantly designed for additive noise models, struggle to handle speckle noise due to its complex statistical characteristics while failing to fully exploit the structural correlations among multi-channel polarization images. To address these limitations, this study proposes a polarimetric speckle suppression network named PoDeFormer, which achieves effective speckle removal by

Screen for Tissue-Specific Markers of Drug-Induced Phospholipidosis Using Mass Spectrometry Imaging.

Drug-induced phospholipidosis is a common side effect of the pharmacological treatment. Although mostly reversible, it can lead to deleterious consequences, including inflammation and fibrosis. While it can be readily detected in tissue biopsies or cell cultures, biomarkers that can be measured noninvasively remain scarce. We used a panel of four compounds known to induce phospholipidosis to investigate three primary target tissues as potential new biomarkers. Using mass spectrometry imaging, followed by analysis with prediction models and feature-wise statistical analysis, we identified over

Using machine learning models to predict vaccine hesitancy: a showcase of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in rural populations during the pandemic.

Understanding vaccine hesitancy is a critical public health challenge, yet traditional statistical methods often fail to capture the complex drivers behind it. This study uses COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in a rural population as a case study to demonstrate a more powerful and interpretable machine learning workflow. We compared seven models and found that non-linear approaches significantly outperformed logistic regression in predictive accuracy. Interpretation of the best-performing model identified vaccine safety perceptions as the most important predictor. This approach revealed nuanced, non

When the one true faith trumps all: Low religious diversity, religious intolerance, and science denial.

Past theories have linked science denial to religiosity but have not explained its geographic variability. We hypothesize that it springs not only from religious intensity but also from religious intolerance, which depends greatly on the experience of religious diversity and hence on geography. The belief that one's religion trumps other faiths precipitates the stance that it trumps science too. This psychological process is most likely to operate in regions or countries with low religious heterogeneity. We measure the rejection of science not only in people's refusal to follow specific health

Chemical applicability and computation of K-Banhatti indices for benzenoid hydrocarbons and triazine-based covalent organic frameworks.

The novel applications in chemistry include the mathematical models of molecular structure of the compounds which has numerous findings in this area that refers to mathematical chemistry. Topological descriptors play a major role in QSAR/QSPR studies that analyses the biological and physicochemical properties of the compounds. In the recent times, a new type of topological descriptors are proposed, called K-Banhatti indices. In this study the chemical applicability of K-Banhatti indices are examined for benzenoid hydrocarbons (derivatives of benzene). These indices have shown remarkable result

Comparison of Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Intraprocedural Cervical Epidural Depth: A Case Series.

BACKGROUND: Cervical epidural depth is assessed intraprocedurally using loss-of-resistance technique and fluoroscopy. It would be helpful if this depth could be predicted using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images. METHODS: This is a case series of 10 patients undergoing cervical epidural steroid injections (CESIs). The following measurements were made: intraprocedural depth, measured on Tuohy needles intraprocedurally, and MRI depth, measured from the MRI cervical spine. Linear regression models were used to compare the 2 depths. RESULTS: For intraprocedural depth vs sagittal MRI depth,

A statistical framework for radiation dose estimation with uncertainty quantification from the γ-H2AX assay.

Over the last decade, the γ-H2AX focus assay, which exploits the phosphorylation of the H2AX histone following DNA double-strand-breaks, has made considerable progress towards acceptance as a reliable biomarker for exposure to ionizing radiation. While the existing literature has convincingly demonstrated a dose-response effect, and also presented approaches to dose estimation based on appropriately defined calibration curves, a more widespread practical use is still hampered by a certain lack of discussion and agreement on the specific dose-response modelling and uncertainty quantification st
